If you're using Capslock as the JAWS key, you need to press Capslock + Control + Shift + J to open the JAWS window.

Very well said, Tim, from another old guy that could use some help sorting through hundreds of e-mails every day with unchanged subject lines.

Hello All,

Please help out this old guy by changing the subject line once the topic has moved on.  Today I received 62 emails, all with the same “version questions” subject line.  The emails had moved on well beyond that topic.  I appreciate whatever you can do.  I hate missing emails of interest, but I lack the patience to open 62 emails without any hint of what is  discussed.

moderated Problems Importing IE Favorites Into Google Chrome Bookmarks List

Tom Behler

Hello, everyone.

Does anyone have an easy way to import IE Favorites into the Google Chrome Bookmarks list?

I have done this before, using the below instructions, but now can’t seem to get the process to work.

My sighted spouse even tried, using the mouse, and couldn’t get the favorites list to import either.

Here are those instructions:

To import your IE book marks, Press alt F and you will be in the vertical Chrome menu. Arrow down to book marks and press the right arrow. Now, arrow down to where it says import book marks and settings... Press enter on that, and you will be able to import your favorites and settings from IE.

Tim,

While I agree with you, entirely, that it's best practice to split a topic off, with a new title, when the actual topic of conversation changes, there are times where thread drift occurs like it did here.  If you realize that you are no longer interested in a given topic with a specific title, remember that you can use the Mute this topic link at the end of any message you've already received for that topic and you will receive no more.

If you find the actual volume of email from any given Groups.io group to be overwhelming, you can also set up topic preview, where you would only receive the first message in any new topic, and receive no more unless you activate the Follow this topic link in the first one.  See: Controlling the Messages You Receive via E-Mail from Groups.io (docx file)

Excellent.
Now if you want to adjust Jaws settings, you can alt+tab to it.

If you have Jaws running from the system tray and you activate the Jaws shortcut on the desktop you should hear:
JAWS Context Menu

Then, if you arrow down you should hear:

If you are not hearing anything like that, tell us exactly what you hear.

Or, you will likely need to call Freedom Scientific support or Microsoft Accessibility Support. Someone who can log into your system and see what is wrong and help you fix it.

Hi,

I just press Insert+j.

Another thing you can try is this: while on the desktop, press j until you get to your desired JAWS version, then press enter, pretending you want to start JAWS again. Instead of starting JAWS, either the context menu or the main window will come up.

If the context menu comes up, press cursor up twice to get to the "About..."
option within the menu, then press enter.

Generally, you can use insert+1 to get into keyboard help mode in JAWS, and
Insert+1 again to leave it.

With that in mind, Madison, what happens if you press Insert+1, then press
insert+j while in keyboard help mode?

Use speech history to copy what it says by pressing JAWSKey+Space, followed by h. That will open up a speech history window you can navigate through and copy from using control+a, then Control+c to copy its contents.

Also, it would be very helpful if we knew the exact brand and name of the laptop in question.

Maybe you have some weird keyboard functions activated or some sort of multi media key conficuration.

Sorry if any of this has already been mentioned, I'm chiming in a lot late. Hopefully you chose laptop keyboard when Jaws was installed. If so, you should be able to use the caps lock in place of the insert key. Just choose caps lock and J together. I've never seen a laptop without at least the 4 arrow keys. Arrow up to about and enter.

One other idea that I use is a bluetooth keyboard. The receiver plugs into a USB port and I have a full keyboard. Of course I have very large hands so typing on a laptop doesn't work well for me.

1. Open JAWS settings, JAWS key plus six on the numbers row.

2. Select the Default JAWS configuration file with CONTROL plus SHIFT plus D.

3. In the search window, type the words extended insert

You get to the JAWS menu by pressing the actual INSERT key, even if CAPSLOCK
is your JAWS key. Since his INSERT key doesn't work, he's up a creek, until
he can figure out why his INSERT key doesn't work. What I do in that case is
to click on the actual JAWS shortcut on the desktop. Then the JAWS menu will
come up when JAWS is in the System Tray.

So, how do you get to the Jaws menu, in the laptop keyboard layout?

Hi,

Capslock+ j is not mapped to the JAWS window in the laptop keyboard layout.

It is used for jumping to the prior word on the home row.

Madison, are you using the jAWs laptop or desktop layout?

Hi, Jim. JAWS settings files are not plain text. The text files to which I was referring are my notes on what settings I changed from their defaults in JAWS.

Hi Bill,

Have you ever tried using some of version control (like git or SVN) to manage your JAWS settings? Once it was set up it might make it easier to revert changes that have been made to settings (if I'm right in my assumption that JAWS settings files are all plain text).

Hi, David. One way I have found to avoid problems with JAWS and apps is to avoid using the JAWS Settings migration feature between versions of JAWS. I make all changes to JAWS settings in new versions of JAWS manually. I also make a file noting all changes which I have made to JAWS that change default behavior. This way, If I see that something is not working as desired with JAWS, I check by using the INSERT plus SPACE, followed by Z command. If the undesired behavior does not persist when Default alternate user directory mode is enabled, I have a complete list of changes I have made to JAWS Default Settings, and can reverse them to see which of these changes has resulted in the undesired behavior of JAWS.

Bill,

Thanks so much for your suggestion, which led me to the solution. After a bit of trial and error I discovered that it was my default.jcf file which was causing the odd behavior in Brave. Once I discovered this I removed it, adjusted some default settings and things are working perfectly now. Thank you again for helping me to troubleshoot and correct this annoying behavior.

Hi, David. The only thing I can recommend is, before you do your repair, go into Utilities>Explore My Settings, and remove all settings files. This is based on the behavior of INSERT plus SPACE, followed by Z. This runs JAWS with no settings configuration files in effect. Then do a JAWS repair, and see if this fixes the problem.

First, I want to say that the problem I’m about to describe is likely not a reproducible JAWS bug but is something which seems to be some sort of corruption unique to my profile.

I’m using JAWS 2021, Brave 1.18.75, Windows 10 Pro, 20H2, Dell Lattitude E7270.

This problem did not occur using my old Dell OptiPlex.

The problem does not occur with other browsers.

When I open a page in Brave all navigation commands work as expected until I navigate to the address bar by either pressing ctrl-L or alt-D.

When the address bar gains focus JAWS speaks it as it should. However, cursor navigation commands do not speak as I navigate with left/right arrow keys and selection commands along with ctrl-C do not allow me to copy the URL to the clipboard.

If I press insert-space, followed by Z to open a temporary default profile navigation commands work as expected.

As soon as I toggle back to my own profile I cannot navigate, select or copy the URL.

Here is what I have done so far.

  1. Run the JAWS 2021 installer to initiate a repair. Same behavior after the repair.
  2. As I use Leasey I then uninstalled that program. Restarting the PC without Leasey still did not fix the problem.
  3. Reinstalled Leasey with no change after PC restart.

I’m wondering if there are specific files in my user settings folder (not shared settings) which I could delete to see if that might fix the issue.

Feedback is appreciated.
