Hello Everyone

Has anyone any tips for accessing Siebel with Jaws? I have a client who has been using it for the past year but changes in the program have stopped him being able to use the normal means of finding tables  and buttons etc. He has tried all the usual things such as refreshing Google Chrome and refreshing Jaws. Any advice would be much appreciated.

Thank you, Paul! I had figured some of this out, but (as ever) I had forgotten about the existence of the Applications Key and had been switching to the JAWS cursor in order to right click. Your approach is much more straightforward.

I'm trying to get the LastPass password manager Chrome extension to work with JAWS. To access the extension without JAWS, a user clicks on it and is then shown a list of passwords for whatever site they are on. However, the Virtual PC cursor doesn't see the button LastPass adds to websites and it doesn't even seem possible to access it with the JAWS cursor.

Is there anyone on the list who has successfully used LastPass with JAWS? I'm wondering if I can tweak how it's set up so that it's more accessible.

Thanks,

moderated How should Custom Highlights work?

James Benstead

I've never used Custom Highlights before and I'm trying to figure out how they work. I've read through the Custom Highlight Colors section of the help file but Custom Highlights are not working the way I would expect.

To test CH I've created a Word document with five paragraphs. The text in each paragraph is a different colour. I go to the fourth paragraph, which is green, and hit:
  • CTRL + INS + H and then enter to "Set foreground and background"
  • Enter again to confirm
  • The "Customer Highlight Options - WORD" dialog appears, and confirms that "SpringGreen3 on white" is set as a Highlight
  • Enter to close the dialog and return to Word
According to the help file, "Once assigned, text matching the color(s) you have specified is treated as highlighted by JAWS. For example, SaySelectedText (INSERT+SHIFT+DOWN ARROW) reads Custom Highlights you have assigned." When I hit INS + SHIFT + DOWN, I would expect JAWS to read out the green text, but it doesn't: instead, it just says "nothing selected".

What am I doing wrong?

(Apologies for crossposting; I originally asked about this on the JAWS UK list, but didn't get a response).

Thank you John. I did some more experimentation and found a good workaround: if I'm in an edit box that LastPass can supply a user ID or password for, I can use the JAWS cursor to right click and then access LastPass via the context menu. It's a little cumbersome but after a couple of runs through it gets pretty efficient. Seems like a couple of scripts to automate the various keystrokes wouldn't be too hard to write, either.

Dear Listers:

I’m sure there may be some of you out there who belong to a Google group of some kind and who maybe have tried to read messages not in your inbox but on the page of the  group you belong to.  This is the situation with me.  I am having trouble getting messages on my group’s page even just to open.  I find where the message is.  If it is unread I hit the enter key, but instead of opening the message nothing happens and the message just remains still.  I am using the latest version of JAWS and am using Windows 10.  One of you suggested I hit insert+Z to disable turn the virtual cursor off and try from there.  I did, but it didn’t work.  If any of you out there belong to a Google group and have tried reading messages from the group’s page, can you give me some tips on how to open and how to read such messages using JAWS?

Hi, Hank. A more reliable way to scan your drive is,

1. Determine the drive letter assigned to the drive that has problems.

2. Go to This PC, and arrow down to the drive in question, but do not press ENTER.

3. Press ALT plus ENTER on the drive letter.

4. Press CONTROL plus TAB until you hear Tools Tab.

5. When you hear the Error check button, check now, press ENTER.

This will scan and fix problems on the external drive.

I tried using different cursors andusually when you would hit enter on a website to get JAWS to work in the editing field, if I hit enter it moves focus somewhere completely different on the page. while  It is in drafts.

I decided to try word press and set up the website and it is now ready with a first blog prompt getting started, but it also is not letting me input any text.

I am using JAWS 2021 and Windows 10. I am a Microsoft 365 user.

Hi Mike

Sounds like the default browser, but see that you have checked that.

If I recall correctly it may be file associations that need looking at. I suspect HTTPS:// is not associated correctly.

I would try switching default browsers to see if that fixes it. If not then Google may hold the answer by adding in file association.

Thanks

Hello:

When you type a URL into the Windows "Run" dialogue box, you must include "http://", "https://", "www.", (without the quotes) or, something similar, before the designated name of the URL. If you do not, you will get the Windows error message , that the designated name of the URL cannot be found and you should make sure the name is entered correctly and try again.

The http: part is always assumed. In fact your browser cannot be invoked without it. Because www. Is such a common prefix for web domains, though, if you enter in something like www.google.com into the run box, it *will* work – I am not sure but I guess the http:// is automatically invoked by Windows. However, typing in something like mbasic.facebook.com will not work. Windows has no way of telling that it’s supposed to be a URL.

As to the problem this person is having – it’s just a thought, but do they have any third party security software running? Perhaps try temporarily disabling it. Maybe it is preventing file explorer (which controls the run dialogue box) from invoking a browser.

If it was saying something like file not found, be sure they used http:// and if it is a secure site, https:// and as Glen said, some sites don’t use the www. Just the http:// or https:// part.

Hi All,

I ran into a strange problem on a friend's Windows 7 Home computer.  When you type a URL into the Run Dialogue nothing happens!  I checked to make sure a browser was selected as the default and that all program associations were selected but, still nothing happens when you press enter on a URL from the Run Dialogue.

You can type, Notepad, or other commands into the Run Dialogue and you'll go straight to them but, for whatever reason URL's don't work, so to speak.  Can anyone shed some light on how to fix this issue?  All help is greatly appreciated.  Thanks much.

Stay safe and take care.  Mike.

Hi Stan

Does insert + J make the Jaws window appear?

Thanks
Tim

Listers: Help! I decided to not run Jaws in the systray to see if some problems would go away. Now I do have j 2021 running but no control over it. I could not put jaws back in systray if I wanted to.

Now there is the Jaws symbol in the task bar but clicking on it gives me nothing except an announcement “Jaws Home Use”. Task switching announces Jaws but nothing is there to work with.

What am I missing here?
