As an aside, unless you have a very old computer, at this point it's almost certain that you have a 64-bit version of Windows.

Microsoft has not supplied 32-bit Windows to computer manufacturers for over 20 years now since even the processors in low end laptops or desktops have been 32-bit chips.  Microsoft has announced a "drop dead" date for 32-bit support, but I cannot recall what that is at the moment, and don't really care since even my ancient Gateway desktop with an Intel Core processor is a 64-bit machine, and it's around 20 years old.

Under Windows 10, and I'd imagine Windows 8, if you look in Settings, System, About in the Device Specifications section there is an entry for System Type which will tell you the bit-depth of both Windows and your computer hardware.

In the case of my machine, that entry reads:  64-bit operating system,  x64-based processor

The folks you buy the SMA from will be able to tell you that, but I would guess that is likely, but I’m just an end user and don’t know some of those details.

The easiest is to press the Windows Key plus r for Run and type c:\ (that’s c colon backslash.)

Then, first letter navigation will get you to the info you want, so press p until you hear the program files folder or folders.

I think the easiest way to find out if you have 32 bit or 64 bit Windows is to open up your main drive with your Program Files folder - this is normally called local drive C:

On that drive look to see if you have more than one Program Files folder.

If you only have the single Program  Files then you have 32 bit Windows.

If however you have 2 folders, the first called Program Files and the second called Program Files 86 you have 64 bit.  Windows stores  32 bit legacy programs files in the program Files 86 folder. Having said that I think even Office is still 32 bit.

David, I don’t know if the assistive devices program is across Canada. It is definitely in Ontario.

Every five years you can get a computer assessment done at the CNIB.

I get my computer assessment done at the University of Waterloo just because I like them and I’ve been going to them since I was a kid.

Once you get your assessment done, they give you some forms to sign, you send these forms off to the assistive devices program, they return them to you with approval, you buy your computer, you send them the receipt, and they refund you the money.

The program is not as good as it used to be but it still exists.

You are entitled to a computer and jaws every five years.

They can also provide you with a list of assistive devices program vendors. You can take your forms to one of these vendors and they will handle everything for you. Meaning you don’t have to buy anything and wait for a refund. They will take your forms and give you your computer and jaws, and you’re done.

Hi there,

I am also in Canada, and recently had to deal with this issue. You do not have to buy a new version of jaws you can upgrade. It is cheaper to upgrade then to buy the new version. If you are on jaws 18 and want to upgrade to jaws 21 and you bypass the upgrades to jaws 19 and jaws 20 then yes you will have to purchase A whole new version which costs $1030 Canadian. If you want to upgrade you can upgrade to 2019 2020, 2021, and have a license for 2022 to upgrade for $480 Canadian plus taxes if you are not registered with the CNIB. If you’re registered with CNIB you will not have to pay taxes.

You cannot purchase from Freedom Scientific there is a Canadian number. Their telephone number is

They is whoever does your computer assessment. I do not know what’s going on in British Columbia I can only speak to my own experience in Ontario. Here in Ontario up  till five years ago the CNIB  did computer assessments I never went to them because as I stated before I like doing my computer assessment at the University of Waterloo. Once your assessment is done by the professional Computer assessment personnel  in my case the University of Waterloo, they prepare the forms and give them to you and the process follows as I described before.

I don’t know what else to tell you this is how it works in Ontario Canada.

I actually have the forms in front of me because I had my assessment done a month ago and I am getting ready to purchase my new computer and jaws.

Hi Mark,

There might be another way to do what you want, but the first thing that comes to mind is to use JAWS speech history. To do that hold down the JWS key and then press the spacebar. Release both keys. Press the letter h. You will be able to see the last bunch of--I think it is 50--utterances that JAWS has made. I am pretty sure it includes everything including the tutor messages.

When you are done, press escape, and you will go back to where you were.

I hope that helps!

Happy holidays! Take care and stay safe!

I’ve been using JAWS for several years (we won’t say how many), and I’ve
always used enter for buttons. I do recall JAWS at some point did say
space, but old habits die hard, and I still use enter for buttons.

I was wondering why in the JAWS 2020 and 2021 version the screen reader
is announcing "to activate press enter" on buttons. It was spacebar for
years and just curious for the change?

The government worker was sure I could get a lap top to put it on as I did not have one.  I was using my sister’s and, she wanted it back.  I was not aware of the 5 year idea and I belong to the CCB in Canada.  When I did talk to Vispero in the U S, as there is no Canadian # she did not inform me of any program. I will have to look into it.  At my age, I’ve seen it happen too often that if you talk to 2 different people you get 2 different answers.  An example is in the U S you can subscribe annually to JAWS, not so in Canada.

As I told you in my previous message this is the number I called which I provided for you and this is the information they told me. I did call Freedom Scientific in the USA and they confirmed that they do not upgrade or sell no longer to Canadian customers they are the ones who gave me this number. I called this number and this is the information the gentleman gave me.

Also I would like to mention that if you were in Canada you are entitled to jaws every five years through the assistive devices program. In which case you would get a full version of jaws for free if you are eligible.

 1 (800) 665-3005

For anyone who lives in Canada, I'm hoping you can help me. My current licence
is good until version 2018, can I just update my licence, or will I have to buy
a whole new licence and copy of Jaws? Can I buy from Freedom Scientific, or do I
have to buy from a Canadian dealer? I really hope someone can help me, as I've
never done this before. Thanks

Sadly that option isn’t available in Canada.

Hello,

I admit I don’t know how JAWS purchase works in Canada, but in the US, if you fall behind several years in purchasing upgrades as you have, it is preferable to buy annual licenses instead. Last I checked this was $90 US. Much cheaper than an initial outlay of over $400 to get yourself up to date. I would assume, but do not know, that the annual license option is available in Canada.

Hope this helps,

David

Hi. I definitely agree that the home annual license option is the best way to go for those who have a very outdated perpetual license. Unfortunately, this option is still only available to U.S. customers.

Don,
I prefer to use the mobile Facebook site with JAWS and it works well.
Will take you to the mobile site which works very well with JAWS. The very first link is labeled Basic Facebook and it is very stripped down. My personal preference is to stay on the mobile site just because I have been using that version for the past 8 years and I know where everything is.

Kevin,

Use Insert Picture, from this device.  ALT+N,P,D

You are going to have to have someone who can see to position the signature afterward, and also to reset the wrapping for text around it to text through picture.

Hello,

How to make jaws read the following information specifying  hour, minutes, and seconds>

01:10:25

Jaws reads one ten twenty five, but would like it to read it as the vocalizer voices  do it, one hour, ten minutes, and 25 seconds.

How can I do this?

Hi Panagiotis, hope you are well. Judging from your name you are Greek. Do you use jaws with the Greek language? And if so does it work well? I tried many many years ago to get a Greek version of jaws and was unsuccessful. I tried to make jaws work by downloading a Greek voice but it did not work. Again this was many years ago I eventually gave up
Of course I found a workaround and that’s the iPhone, the Mac, and also the Greek voice works with an VDA
It would be nice to have jaws work with the Greek voice that’s why am asking if anything has changed.

Not quite.  Is there a way to get JAWS to just repeat the content type, content state, content attributes, label, or the instructions? The purpose would be to support close study and familiarization with an interface element.
