Ron Kolesar

Just wanted to say thanks to you Bill.
It didn't fix the issue with my bank's web site.
But at least you taught this long time pc user a new trick.
But the good news is that I'm working with my bank to try and figure out why
with two different web browsers and three different screen readers, JAWS
NVDA and Narrator, why I can't log into my account.
I can do it out on ie 11, but the bank like most company's these days are no
longer using IE 11.
It's funny, when I click on the logon or in button, then tab over once I see
the submit button, which is what I should be seeing within both edge and
Google Chrome.
But for some reason the submit button isn't popping up for me to click on
it.
But since the bank isn't working with IE 11, when I click on the submit
button I get the sorry charley, IE 11 won't work with the bank's web site.
So, many thanks for trying to help me out.
Ron who can earn a license to use a radio, but for some weird reason can't
earn a license to drive a car or fly a airplane.
Go, figure. SMILES.

Most everything is checked by default, so you have to uncheck those things
you do not want to delete, but it shows the level of control you have on
what things you want deleted, which is very nice.

moderated Re: What is the best way to "label" an unlabeled button in an app?

Bill White <billwhite92701@...>

Hi, Richard. I don't think Custom Label is the answer. I think what you want is to create prompts.

The "Prompt Creator" and "Graphics Labeler" are used for labeling controls and graphics in applications.

Prompts are labels for controls in dialog boxes. Some of the time, JAWS does not read a prompt, or the prompt that is provided is not very meaningful.

Now, when you find a prompt like this, just assign the prompt you want JAWS to speak and display in Braille. And if you want a brief reminder spoken whenever

you move to a particular control, just add a custom tutor message to provide this information.

Creating a Prompt

To create a prompt:

Move to the control for which the prompt is not properly spoken.

Press CTRL+INSERT+TAB.

A dialog box appears to walk you through the creation of the prompt. On the first page, enter the prompt for the control as you want JAWS to speak it,

and then select Next.

On the second page, enter the prompt for the control as you want JAWS to display it in Braille, and then select Next.

On the third page, specify a Tutor message to provide assistance with navigation or the use of this control. If you leave the Tutor message blank, the

default message is used. Select Finish to create your prompt.

Note: You can also press INSERT+F2 to open the Run JAWS Manager dialog and select Prompt Create from the list to create a prompt.

Custom Labels

This is appropriate for labeling buttons and links on web pages.

Since you want to create a label in an app, not a web page, I don't think Custom Labels is what you want.

Hi!

I am using Windows 10 and JAWS 2020.  In a particular desktop app (Amazon Music), all of its buttons are unlabeled.  What is the best way to "label" them?  Might “custom label” under JAWS Manager (JAWSKey+F2) do the trick?

Thanks,

I cannot speak to access, but Indeed is a very reputable site.  My friend runs an IT recruiting firm and posts her listings both on LinkedIn and also on Indeed.  I also know of other organizations that post there.

If you need additional help with online aspects of the job hunt, You might want to look into AIRA. I believe they have a job seekers promotion that gives you some free  service from the sighted assistants to help with the online job applications, resume and postings.  I’ve been using the service for help with inaccessible items at work and it’s been really helpful.

I don’t use Windows mail, but I’ve begun always browsing to the file with Windows Explorer, File Explorer, whatever they are calling it this week, and copying the file, then while in the open email, pasting it, and it attaches the file.

At least, this works with Outlook.  I would think it would also work in Windows Mail.

Hi,  Until recently in Windows 10 Mail, I could use the familiar alt plus I key combination and type in the file name to accomplish the task.

Now, even when the correct file name is typed, I get a file not found  message and no options to browse for the file.

Any hints for getting my mind right on this little issue will be much appreciated.  Happy Holidays, Mitch

You said you "downloaded" Jaws 2021, I assume you also installed it afterwards, you know, where it asks you to accept the license terms and then it would say press enter to install, at the end it would say something about having made changes and you need to reboot?

As for hotkeys, you can't use the same hotkey on two applications, if, for example, you use Control + Shift + J for Jaws 2020 and you try to use it for Jaws 2021 it simply would not get put in, if you just pressed it and clicked OK and then if you go back into the shortcut properties it would still say "None" for keyboard shortcut.

Thanks Bill,
I did not ask the question but that works great.
Most everything is checked by default, so you have to uncheck those things you do not want to delete, but it shows the level of control you have on what things you want deleted, which is very nice.

Hi, Ron. The cookies will be under History.

1. Open Edge.
2. Press CONTROL plus SHIFT plus DELETE.
3. Choose what you want to clear from the check boxes.
4. TAB to the Clear Now button and press ENTER.

This should clear all cookies and site data, not including user names and passwords, unless you also checked this before deleting.

WARNING: This email originated externally. Exercise caution. Think before clicking links or opening attachments.

Hello,
When I lift the lid of my computer, JAWS announces the volume level twice and then presents me with the lock screen to log in.
Is there a means by which to disable this volume alert announcement?
This is a new behavior for me as this had not been exhibited in
JAWS2020 or previous versions of JAWS.
Thank you in advance for any responses.

Glenn / Lenny

Hi Laura,
Although the site can be overwhelming, because of all its content, you
should use your state's workforce page.
You can upload your resume and they have jobs for your area, many of which
you can apply for the job through their site.
You can also set up a daily eMail with jobs in your area.
You do a search on their site for a job, and set the search criteria, I set
my criteria by zip code only, so I get all jobs in my area, because I would
do most jobs if it doesn't require driving or reading stuff like handwriting
and the like.
You will of course need to create an account on their site.
Other than that, be sure to try different browsers if a site seems to not
work with your screenreader, I learned to do alt + D and then copy with
control + C which copies the link of the site, and then open a different
browser and do control + L and paste with control + V, and press enter.
HTH.

Glenn

Hi Laura,

Monster.com and LinkedIn are likely the most accessible options. Monster was sued and became accessible as a result of a settlement.
