Try using the caps lokc key and the numpad key 3.

The caps lock key replaces the jaws key.

In Microsoft Word, JAWS key plus NumPad 3 reads the Status Line. Is there a laptop keyboard layout keystroke for this, or is there a way to assign another key for this in Keyboard Manager for those without a NumPad?

Thank you.

I have Libre, open and mS offices on this machine and none of them even seem to notice each other. I don’t see any reason why they should. But yeah, there’s probably nothing to lose, in this case…

My own personal recommendation  in relation to Libre Office at least is to download and try  using it as a portable application if you are already running MS Office.

I may be unlucky but in the past when trying to install both on the same system they did not seem to play nice together.

Of course if you are on a machine without Office there is nothing to lose.

Both Libre and Open Office are certainly worth having around. Open office project doesn't seem to be doing too well, development wise, but probably still better than jarte. The writer (word processor) at least works well enough with jFW. Libre office is more of a going concern and I would probably opt for that, though my last experience shows that it works better with nVDA at least than older versions of jAWS (like 2018). However, thought I saw something about libre in a recent Jaws what's new, so maybe some work has been done on FS's end. Libre is also updating very regularly, and it's easy to find loads of keyboard commands online for everything. It can also work with more recent MS Word files.

hi,

I didn't followed the thread about Jarte, but as a piece of advice,  if
you're going to use a word processor  on  a regular basis, let's say
college, I won't recommend  any free word processor, I plunged myself
into searching for an acceptable piece of software, but in the end, I
ended up resorting to MS Word. Of course, this really depends on the
user's needs and expectations. Every once in a while and to do the
shopping list, wordpad is a good alternative.

In FSCast 191 (mp3, transcripts at heading 2 JAWS Power Tip) this question was answered. Copy and pasted here:

GLEN:  Time now for today’s Power Tip.  It comes from long-time JAWS scripter Dave Baker, who reminded those of us who should know better that there’s a feature already built into JAWS for knowing what the real address is of a link that you may encounter, either in email or on the web.  This is particularly important if those links point at things that, let’s say, would require you to log in.  And you wouldn’t want to click on it if it really was an imposter because the name of the link doesn’t necessarily represent what it’s really pointing at.  I’m sitting here in Microsoft Outlook now with a piece of mail open that says it’s from the U.S. Social Security Administration.

JAWS VOICE:  To view your most recent statement, please visit link www.socialsecurity.gov/reviewyourstatement.

GLEN:  Now, this link is probably legitimate.  But to make sure, once you have the virtual PC cursor focused on the link itself, press INSERT+F7.

JAWS VOICE:  Links list dialog, links list view, www.socialsecurity.gov/reviewyourstatement.  One of one.

GLEN:  Now, the only reason I said to position on the link is, if there had been more than one link in the email, the links list always positions on the link that’s associated with where you are in the virtual buffer.  So it’s just an easy way to get there quickly.  Now that I’m here, if I press INSERT+PAGE DOWN...

JAWS VOICE:  Https://www.socialsecurity.gov/reviewyourstatement.

GLEN:  So I heard the link, and I am now sure that that really points at Social Security.  But sometimes the links are much longer and much more involved, and it’s hard to make them out just hearing them as one single thing.  So you can turn on the JAWS cursor and get to the bottom of the page and read the link, word or character at a time.  So I’m going to press INSERT+NUM PAD-.  That’s going to route the JAWS cursor to the PC cursor and turn it on.

JAWS VOICE:  Route JAWS to PC.

GLEN:  Now I’ll hit PAGE DOWN.  Now I’ll do a “say word.”

JAWS VOICE:  Https:.

GLEN:  And then I can just move on by word.

JAWS VOICE:  //www.socialsecurity.gov/reviewyourstatement.

GLEN:  So an easy way to always know what a link points at and never click on the wrong thing by mistake.  I showed it to you in Outlook.  It works equally well with links on the web.

In view of the problem someone  experienced, as an experiment  I  went onto another machine without Jarte.

I too found the enable screenreader copied to clipboard instruction did not work.

However the following did.

  1. Install Jarte
  2. Close Jaws and start NVDA
  3. Start Jarte, Jarte will announce screen reader mode.
  4. Close NVDA and start Jaws. Restart Jarte and it sticks in screenreader mode for Jaws  also now.
  5. .Now finally  with Jarte in focus use Jaws F2 and find settings centre for Jarte and create the profile. Type edit in the search box and then tab down to uncheck enhanced edit mode.
  6. The only other thing I  think is to install the office Add in pack to improve Jarte compliance with Office Documents.

This all seems to work nicely to get a free Jaws accessible Word Processor for now.

You might try starting jaws from the runbox with the /default switch, just to make sure nothing was accidentally changed in the settings.

Hi,

It took me a while to make it work, but I found that if I tabbed through to the edit fields, rather than arrowing down, I was not kicked out.

But I had to double check to make sure I was where I thought I should be.

I generally do not have any issues now using JAWS 2020 and 2021 in both edge and Chrome.

I may be asking a lot of off the wall questions but I am just trying to learn how to use Jaws. When using Word 2016 I am trying to use the virtual ribbon and for the most part it is easy to use. However I am finding when you arrow down to some of the menu choices a lot of them are hard to understand because is saying something that sounds like "has popup" after each menu choice. Sighted help says that there are small graphics that follow each menu choice and that is what I assume Jaws is dealing with. I looked under the graphic settings and haven't found the setting that may stop this "has popup" from being spoken. Any help would be greatly appreciated.
