Hello to my fellow jaws subscribers.
I thought I had made sure that jaws 21 fires up at the log in screen.
I've doubled checked and here's what I have checked:
Start jaws at the log on screen, checked.
Start jaws after long on for all users checked.
Start jaws after the long on for this user and I also have the following
checked in the dialog box, using the all users settings.
So, what shouldn't be checked?
But for some weird reason when I fire up the pc in the mornings, I need to
go to NVDA or Narrator then type in my unlock code to access my pc.
So, what do I have checked off that shouldn't be checked please?
Many Thanks.

moderated a big annoying problem

Deb and the girls

I have a laptop with windows 7, jaws 2021, and have downloaded google chrome and Microsoft edge.  I selected chrome as my browser because I can’t seem to get edge to work just right for some reason.

Recently, since installing jaws 20221 and deleting jaws 18 19 and 20, I have been having difficulties.  Chrome seems to work sluggishly, not at all, or oddly.

Even when I have good internet connection, sometimes when I select chrome it will not populate.  I have to go back and select it 3 or four times before it finally takes off.  Then, at times, I will be on a web page or in a program doing something important like buying something, and it throws me out for no reason.

At other times, it says it can not find a page that I know is there and goes into this thing about secure and unsecure sites.  These have been secure well-known sites like amazon so why does it do that?

Finally, I have chrome save some of my passwords.  Anyway, while I am trying to read an article or pay a bill or something, or write a birthday wish on facebook, parts of words from sites I have visited appear over and over.  I have to press escape escape to get rid of them  sometimes several times.  I see the words change password appear  in the middle of an article about health.  It is just weird, all this stuff which I have not saved bleeding into completely unrelated tasks and places.  So, is it jaws or chrome or google or windows seven or what?  Why would installing jaws 2021 suddenly make these problems worse?  I would just like some understandable answers.  Whenever you try to talk to freedom scientific, they act like they do not know what you are talking about or that they don’t handle those kinds of questions, etc.  So give me some opinions please!  Should I ditch chrome? What would you advise?         ;

moderated Strange Zoom Volume Issue

Tom Behler

Hello, everyone.

Recently, I have been doing some online teaching via Zoom, and have noticed a very strange issue with my microphone volume.

For these meetings, I use a headset with an attached microphone.  I have experienced this issue with two different headsets.  Both headsets are connected via a USB port.

My issue is that when I’m teaching, my microphone suddenly looses volume for no apparent reason.

I can’t identify a consistent pattern to these failures, but I’m told my volume suddenly disappears to the point that my audio is unintelligible.

Has anyone else had this issue in Zoom meetings, and if so, how did you solve it?

Is there something I can do to keep my volume levels more stable?

I’m using Jaws 2021 here on a Windows 10 PC.  I also put Jaws in Speech On Demand mode as I’m conducting my classes, because they involve screen sharing, and I want to minimize Jaws speech when I’m navigating the screen.  Fortunately, I have a HIMS Polaris Notetaker that I can use as a Braille display.

Thanks for any help!

moderated Jaws & Excel column navigational key stroke problem

Shan Noyes

Hi all!

I’ve got a column of numbers in excel I’ve sorted them and some of  the numbers appear in numerous rows.  What I want to do is have the focus jump down to the next different number in the column.

I asked this question in September and got an answer.  But my notes are messed up,

So reaching out again for help.

The instruction I have are:

Ok, hold down the control and shift. Do not let go of theese 2 keys. Now while holding down these keys, hit down arrow, do not hold down the down arrow, just press it. wait a second, then hit the backspace key. The backspace key is normally above the enter key.

The person who had the answer was a Chris Block

So it would be greatly appreciated if you could write me directly because maybe it’s a timing issue.

That was very helpful, thanks: - pressing Insert+Space and Z fixed it, so Braille in Outlook works in the original settings mode. So I assume I need to reset JFW 2021 back to factory settings so I can start again. How would I do this?

Thank you

Hello John,
I am using the Outlook app Office365 version installed on my computer with JAWS2021 and it is working just fine using Focus40 braille display fifth generation. I also tried it on my work computer and same result.
At this point, I think that there may be an issue with your locally installed copy of JAWS. Another way to test this is by first exiting Outlook pressing insert space followed by z this will place you in the JAWS default directory similar to how JAWS came from the factory. See if Outlook is still causing an issue with your braille display once you place JAWS in this mode this is a toggle so pressing insert space z will take you back to how JAWS had been configured before.

the same in Bluetooth and in the USB connection. I've loaded the
Outlook specific settings with Insert

Hi all. Just an observation. Have you verified that your Mantice is
being seen by the PC. Usually, when you install a braille display, you
can see the info in your device manager. Have you checked there? Also,
I'm wondering if the Narrator braille is blocking your access to
braille. If braille is installed there, it may be interfering with
JAWS and any other screen reader for that matter.

Hi John,

Did you export your settings from JAWS 2020 to JAWS 2021? If not then
it could still be the structured mode issue. The reason I say this is
because I am typing this on my Mantis by using a Bluetooth connection
to my pc, JAWS 2021, and Outlook 2016 and all is working just fine.

Good luck!

Actually, I just tried my Focus 40, 4th gen, and it's doing the same thing.
I'm using Office 365. But when I load JFW 2020 it works perfectly. So
it is an issue connected with JFW 2021. I've just made certain the
Braille Sleep mode is not enabled for Outlook, and it is not.

Hi John,

This sounds very strange. Just a couple of questions. How are you
connected to the PC, via usb or Bluetooth? Which version of office are
you using? In outlook do you have JAWS speech? What happens on the
Mantis display in Outlook-do you see the cursor blinking?

I just had a thought, are you in JAWS braille structured mode for Outlook?
That's one setting that I have missed in the past when setting up a
braille display. Outlook doesn't work well without it.

Good Luck! Take care and stay safe!

works fine in Word and Windows. I'm running JFW 2021 on Windows 10

There's no Braille as I write this and none anywhere else in Outlook.
If I Alt-Tab into Edge it starts working. Does anyone have a possible

I have a slight problem. If I have more than 2 programs running and I try to switch to the 3rd or 4th program with alt, tab I can only switch to the first 2  programs that are  running. Using insert F10 I can see all 4 running programs and switch to the one I want to use. Makes it difficult when I am paying bills and have running the bank, Jaws and my bills paid document. Every time I switch to see what and how much the net  bill is I have tuse insert F10 to switch to the bills paid document. Never was this way till Jaws 2021. How do I get back to where I can alt tab to all the open programs.  Thanks Tom

Hi Don,

My best guess is that somehow the Classic scheme has been modified   to play a sound instead of speak.  If it had been modified it would read as Classic modified unless something weird happened and we all know nothing weird ever happens with computers don't we!  LOL

Because the sound won't play when running with the default settings is further proof that it's a setting that has been changed and the first place I would look is in the settings of the scheme you're running.

Thanks Tom

The first time you use Research It with Insert+spacebar then r, it will say that a feature needs to be installed. Hit yes to install.
Once tha tis done, when you press Insert+spacebar, then r, you will be in an edit field.
If you tab once, you will be in the list of sources available.
Arrow down to the one you want, and then shift+tab back and type your search term, or of course, type your search term, then tab into the list and pick the one you want.
Apparently, in the settings, you can set one of them as the primary, but I have not explored that.

That was very helpful, thanks: - pressing Insert+Space and Z fixed it, so Braille in Outlook works in the original settings mode. So I assume I need to reset JFW 2021 back to factory settings so I can start again. How would I do this?

Hello John,
I am using the Outlook app Office365 version installed on my computer with JAWS2021 and it is working just fine using Focus40 braille display fifth generation.

Good luck!

A further note on how this happens; if you press control+o to open a document and shift+tab to get to your files, the first button you land on is Name…. If you accidentally press space or enter on that button, you will reverse the order of the files.

An easy way is when you are in the list of

documents, tab once.  It will say 'name, split

Well, that is strange.
Have you talked with Freedom Scientific about this?
I find nothing in the settings that would account for this behavior.
Best of luck,

I unchecked both Play jaws sounds
and enable sound notifications and I still get the sound when landing on
a web page link.

Type sound in the search box and arrow down. You should hear:

There are options that have to do with forms mode sounds that you can deselect, or select different sounds....

I am running Jaws 2021 on a win 10 system. I have forms mode set to manual. When I arrow down a web page Jaws makes a sound when I land on a link and other controls. Is there a way to stop this?
