Re: Jaws2020 Task manager question

Sounds to me like that wouldn’t work in this case and Chrome has just stopped working. That happens to me often with this browser if I leave it alone for too long, for some reason, and I have to kill it with taskkill or manager.

Hi, Addison. Yes, it is supposed to say closed. To open the category in Task Manager, press the Right Arrow, and you may find several tasks under this one category. It says "Closed" in the same manner as when you are exploring the Files and Folders tree under Windows Explorer. It is not saying that the program is closed, it is saying that the entry for that item is closed and must be expanded with the Right Arrow.

You can go to task manager, hit g key until it says “google chrome”, then just hit the delete key to end the task. If chrome is already in a non-responsive state (which it sounds like has happened) you will not even get a prompt, hitting delete will just do the trick. Then, check to make sure all instances of google chrome are closed (hit the g key again).

Re: switching to running programs
JM Casey
It definitely is a problem related in some way to JAWS, though you’d think it wouldn’t affect task switching behaviour. It’s not exclusive to JAWS 2021 – I definitely had this happen a few times with JAWS 18 and possibly 2018 as well. Restarting JAWS does seem to fix this intermitent problem. Alternatively, there are more efficient ways to switch to desired applications than alt-tabbing (I’m not criticising, I often fall back on this method, too) – a good reason to start using some of them more frequently.

Using insert F10 I can see all 4 running programs and switch to the one I want to use. Makes it difficult when I am paying bills and have running the bank, Jaws and my bills paid document. Every time I switch to see what and how much the net bill is I have tuse insert F10 to switch to the bills paid document. Never was this way till Jaws 2021. How do I get back to where I can alt tab to all the open programs. Thanks Tom

Well, If you think audio is only properly reproduced through specialized components and very sophisticated speakers and are willing to build them yourself or spend a lot of money for them then you are a audiophile. There are tons of audio forums on the net and I don't know if a
blind specific one would get much traffic. you can e-mail me
privately and we could talk. I have build cross overs and speaker

Hi, One of the reasons IE will work when others won't is that
Jaws has a lot of extra scripting for it. The Accessibility of IE
was bad and all kinds of workarounds were created so that is why
in some cases jaws will still work better in IE than Chromium
based browsers. Which most all are except for Firefox. There are
really just 3 types of browsers. IE which as Brian pointed out is
outdated, Chromium based ones like Chrome and Edge and Firefox
which uses it's own rendering engine.

I'd say two browsers that use the same underlying technology is sufficient to allow you to do a quick and dirty check as to whether there is some browser-related difference between two built on the same code base. And even that's only necessary if you really use one of them frequently. I was once a Firefox only end user, and still use it extensively, but I've not installed any of its spin-offs so that I can check out whether a given peculiarity in Firefox might not occur in a spin off. Re: am I losing my mind or is we coding really that different by browser?
Robin,
The only broad insight I can offer is that Internet Explorer has not been being maintained, beyond security updates, for a very long time now. It has not been keeping up with web coding changes, and there have been very many, since it went into what I call "walking dead" stage. What you get when using IE can, in many instances, be significantly different than what you get in any currently maintained browser, and there are occasions where what you get may be "easier to use" and others where it's an absolute mess. You really should not be using IE, ever, when security is important, e.g., online banking. Here I'll insert my usual list of articles on why you should dump IE, immediately if not sooner, a number written by experts on IE: Why You Should Dump Internet Explorer | Daniel Miessler (Dec 2019) The perils of using Internet Explorer as your default browser ... (March 2019 – straight from the proverbial horse’s mouth) Microsoft cybersecurity expert: Please, stop using Internet ... (Feb 2019) Microsoft security chief: IE is not a browser, so stop using ... (Feb 2019) Microsoft wants you to stop using Internet Explorer (Feb 2019) 12 reasons not to use Internet Explorer, ever | Computerworld (June 2011 – Even more valid now) And if you web search on “Why you should not use Internet Explorer” the list of returned results is long, and virtually unanimous in the expert (and non-expert) opinion that you should not. I feel like I’m losing my mind – maybe because I’m hitting my head on the wall. On my work computer, my primary browser s Chrome. I just got an upgrade to the chromium Edge, so I’ll try that soon, but assume it’s similar to Chrome. I also still have IE 11. I’ve noticed with two different web applications that JAWS voices the same page quite differently in when I use Chrome versus IE. I feel stuck on doing what I need to do. Here are a couple examples. I’d really like to understand from some of you web developer/accessibility people what is going on.
Running Windows 10, JAWS 2020 (soon to be 2021).
Our time keeping system is not great with JAWS. The company says it works with NVDA & Firefox, neither of which I have on this laptop and if you use what they call listview instead of the more intuitive table view that my colleagues use. If I use IE 11, I can arrow down through this listview and it reads a button for each date in my pay period, followed by a button where I can code whether I took a vacation day or such. This format makes some sense. If I click the button for pay code, it seems to open a small dialog associated to the corresponding date where is shows each type of code an the number of hours, such as 8 hours of vacation. Because I’m having some issues with the menu to pick a code type, I thought I’d go try it in Chrome. In Chrome, the same page reads very differently. Arrowing down through the page only has one option for each day of the pay period and JAWS says its’ a menu. I have yet to figure out how to access this menu, as all my normal tricks aren’t working. I’ll likely call AIRA for visual help as a temporary work around.
On SharePoint sites we use internally, There are tabs at the top that bring up different ribbons of buttons for editing and working with pages. In IE, these tabs JAWS sees as Links and will bring up in the links list, then I can use B to move to each button. In Chrome, these tab labels do not come up as links and I have to find them in other ways that are more clunky and seems to trigger Forms mode.
Is this expected? I’m surprised that the same elements on a page would be rendered so differently in different browsers. I’m really trying to embrace Chrome, but find some web coding more clunky and in the case of my time keeping system, not seemingly accessible. Would Firefox really render this another way that could potentially work better with JAWS? I’ll have to ask for an exception to get Firefox installed and not even sure if it will be an improvement.
Thoughts?

Hi All,

I do have a gmail account.
I have found some information on google documents but not google slides.
If anyone has any suggestions of resources to help me learn this, that would be great as I have never used the google suite and have my gmail set up to use in outlook. I am a person who is totally blind, using JAWS 2020 and Windows 10.
I plan to have Zoom open on one device and resources such as google slides and the workbook and texts on a separate laptop with earbud for that computer tucked in my headset and microphone that is connected to the laptop I am using for Zoom. Thank-you for any advice. Respectfully yours, Sharon Ballantyne

Re: Access to network license via VPN
Thomas Stivers
Jacob,

You will be able to authorize your network copies of JAWS over a VPN as long as the clients can reach the license server. You will want to set the system environment variable LSFORCEHOST to the domain name or IP address of your license server. The clients will need ongoing access to the server as JAWS phones home regularly. This setup is pretty frustrating as you or your users will constantly be getting dumped into demo mode whenever the VPN goes away. I reached out to FS about this issue and they set up my organization to be in their sponsored software program. The rep stated that this is available to organizations who have network licenses of JAWS, Fusion, or ZoomText. This way anyone with an email address at our domain can get an annual subscription to JAWS which will continue to be renewed as long as they are with the organization. These annual licenses of JAWS are not tied to the VPN at all. They will continue to work on subways, airplanes, Etc. As far as I know this is all legal and above board as it was a result of me reaching out to FS tech support. I hope this is helpful, and good luck! Thomas
