I, too, find Canvas to be extremely accessible! I have had issues with some things, but that is the way the teacher made the quizzes. I have never had any trouble sending messages.

This is only partly true in my opinion.

  1. It seems impossible to get anything meaningful out of the Calendar page – even if using the recommended  Agenda view for accessibility. I don’t know if this is the fault of the Tutors but it is pretty baffling to interpret with a screenreader with only unattributed numbers being announced.
  2. 2. Ihave never found the Quizzes fully accessible. Check boxes are not announced in the version I have tried show it is impossible to tell what they relate to without sight.
  3. I have never on the courses I have been on been able to complete a session evaluation form. There seems no way to focus into an edit box for feedback with a screenreader.
  4. Similarly I have never been able to complete an end course evaluation for similar reasons. It seems impossible to focus into edit boxes in able to submit comments.
  5. Whilst it is relatively easy to respond to Tutor initiated discussion I have never been able to initiate messages. With the screenreaders I use at least this is an extremely clunky process where you have to assign message receivers from drop down buttons  which seem very hard to manage with a Screenreader. Whilst I can sometimes get into a list containing the names of students and course tutors I have found no way of selecting these so that I can actually send a message.
  6. There may be work arounds for all this but I have been using screenreaders since 1999 and I  certainly do not find these parts of the site straightforward or easy.

Yes Canvas itself is accessible with JAWS2020. I have not tried it

moderated Re: form fields in word

Cynthia,

I have received your example.  There are several issues with how it was designed, and at the moment the biggest one was the use of ActiveX controls for the fillable fields and the next one that it is not done as a true fillable form, where the only thing you can touch is those fillable fields.

I have to do some additional research on how one goes about converting ActiveX controls to straight text once they've been filled out.  So far, I have not found any simple way to do that.  I never use ActiveX controls when creating fillable forms, far preferring the legacy form fields, which correspond to what one's used to on webpages, and are far easier to convert to straight text after the form is filled out.  I'll let you know what I find if I find it (or don't).

Hi:

I usually also turn it off it at all possible.

I acquired a Surface Pro 7 with a type cover, and, with that, you can go into settings with Windows+I, search for touch and arrow down to the option to turn on or off the touch pad.

Another thing with the type cover is that the fn key can be tapped by itself to toggle the f keys to either perform the multimedia and other special functions or to just be f keys.  No going into cmos to fix it.

Most of the time, though, I use an external USB keyboard at home, so it’s not a big deal.

I have had numerous laptops over the years and the “mouse” area always causes problems…  Often times I inadvertently touch the mouse area and JAWS loses focus.  Do most users turn off the mouse and connect an external mouse if sighted users want to utilize a mouse?  Any input would be appreciated…

Hi all,

Wow, I should have first asked what others do. Hitting the hyphen for separators helped, but I never thought about checking if the messages were in a table. Pretty dumb of me. That works great. Using table navigation even reads you each message without hitting any other keys.

While headings would be nice too, table navigation works great here. Thanks for pointing this out, and again, wish I had asked earlier.

No, it's obvious what FS is trying to do. They are deliberately making a two-upgrade SMA more expensive for $210 than a two-year license for $180,because they want to gradually migrate all JAWS customers to the licensing arrangement and eliminate the SMA arrangement altogether. Now that JAWS has reached a plateau and few new features can be expected in the future, many JAWS users may simply decide to let their SMA's lapse. But by gradually switching them to the licensing arrangement, JAWS users will have to renew their licenses annually which would be more profitable for FS in the long run.

That's true, but if FS wants to migrate all JAWS customers to the licensing arrangement, they will probably still keep the price of a two-year license ower than the price for a two-update SMA. Almost all first-time JAWS users now purchase a license because it is far cheaper than purchasing JAWS outright for $1000 or more. Another advantage of the license arrangement is that there is no activation code to deal with like with an SMA, which makes life easier for both FS and its customers.

Cynthia,

You cannot send an attachment to the group, as they get stripped off (or at least they do on the web interface, which is how I read).  Please use the Reply to Sender link at the bottom of this message and your e-mail client will open a message addressed to me alone, and attach the document to that.

Thanks.

I am having a problem with the "say all" command in the latest version 2021 of Jaws. Using the Brave Web browser, Random words are spoken with a rising pitch, like capitalized letters are. At times it occurs every few words and is very annoying. A friend looked at the screen an could not see any thing that would cause this. It doesn't happen with IE or Edge. Does anyone else have this problem or a cure.  Tom
