Re: form fields in word
Cynthia,
Are you being tasked with looking at forms that others have already filled out? If so, you might want to consider converting the whole form to "straight MS-Word document" format, even if just for the purpose of reading, and not saving the result if it must remain as a fillable form. If it does not need to remain that way after you've received it for processing, and you may need to refer to it later, I'd save the "converted to normal MS-Word document" version for filing purposes. When dealing with fillable Word forms as the person filling them out, unless you have your screen reader echoing character-by-character as you type, you will hear nothing as you fill out a form field. This is a quirk of how these are processed by Word. You've got to complete the filling in, tab to the next field/checkbox/whatever, then Shift+TAB back to get your text that you filled in read. ---------------------------------- What follows presumes the designer of the fillable form did what they should have and imposed editing restrictions such that the original recipient was only able to traverse the fillable parts and interact with them. Also that they did not password protect these settings as well, otherwise you'd have to know the password to complete the removal of editing restrictions. Unprotecting All Word Form Fields and Converting Them to Regular Text 1. You must first remove the restricted editing settings that allow you only to fill out the form a. Activate the Developer Tab, Restrict Editing. ALT+L,PE b. Activate the Stop Protection button, which is the only button. Just Hit Enter c. Close the Restrict Editing pane. CTRL+Spacebar,C 2. Select all content in the document. CTRL+A 3. Issue the command to convert all form fields to regular Word text. CTRL+SHIFT+F9 At this point all form fields will be straight text like the rest of the document, and can be edited just as you usually would. You cannot reverse this action, so be certain you have filled out anything that needs to have been filled out before going through the above steps. --Brian - Windows 10 Pro, 64-Bit, Version 2004, Build 19041 The purpose of education is not to validate ignorance but to overcome it. |

Jaws SMA

Well I used my last SMA to upgrade to 2021. If I remember correctly I purchased my last SMA for $120 two years ago. Now I am told that the cost will be $150 and that price is only good until Jan 1. Don't know what the price will be after that.

Hi Alison.
I’m using Windows 10, so my instructions are for that.
First, hit the WINDOWS key. This should put you in the search area where you can type something.
Now start typing BLUETOOTH. You’ll get something like Bluetooth and other devices. Hit ENTER on that.
You’ll be where an option is add Bluetooth device. That’s what you want. You might also have to turn Bluetooth on. In this area, TAB is your friend.
I think once you select ADD Bluetooth device, you may have to select Bluetooth again.
Now put your Bluetooth headphones in pairing mode. TAB around this screen for a list of Bluetooth devices. Look for your headphones, and hit ENTER on them. If all goes well, they’ll be connected. Be warned, however. Once paired, all your sounds will go through the phones, and unless you specifically set JAWS for another sound card, your speech will also go through the headphones, and you might think you lost speech.
Hope this helps. Kevin and Jilly the flying doggie

It sounds like a good speaker. Wonder if you can help as you are obviously used to pairing. I belong to a Rock Chir which is currently having to meet via Zoom. So everyone doesn’t hear Jaws nattering on, I am using headphones, but doing so is quite restrictive as some of the songs have moves. Blue tooth headphones would obviously be the answer and I do have some which I use with my iPhone. I’ve no idea how to pair them with a desktop computer however. Any clues on how to go about this please? Alison.

Hi all.
I’ve finally found a Bluetooth speaker that doesn’t suffer from the dreaded cutting off the start of speech with JAWS. It’s the Tribit Soundmax Plus Bluetooth speaker. I might have that backwards, but if you look for it on Amazon, you’ll find it. It has 24 watts of sound, is stereo, and uses a micro USB cable for charging. The buttons have tactile markings, so it’s easy to figure out. It claims to have 20 hours of battery life, and the advertising says it has a range of up to 100 feet. I just got it, so I can’t say much about how well it works yet. The thing that I’m very happy about is it doesn’t chop off the beginning of JAWS when it starts. I think it’s mainly made for devices like smart phones, but it paired with my Windows 10 laptop with no problem. Oh yeah, it’s waterproof, so some rain won’t hurt it.
I ordered it from Amazon, and with Prime it costs around $60, taxes included.
That’s all from me. Right now it’s charging, but I used it plugged in with no problem, but I don’t know what that would mean for the battery. Tonight I’m going to start music on this laptop, and instead of moving the computer to my bedroom, the new speaker will be used, and it will be really nice to have a lower volume than what the lower quality internal speakers produce. I know, I could just lower their volume in sound settings, but what can I say, I’m lazy.
Just letting you know.

form fields in word
Cynthia Bruce
Hi All,
I am using the most recent version of MS Word and JAWS 2020. My department has created what seem to be forms in word, and I keep running into trouble with them. I can read the first few lines, but then it gets hung up when I get to a form field with a lot of information. It just stops reading.
Any ideas about what might be going on?
Thanks,

Hi Richard/all, Kevin may have had an option called “ui” something checked, which is located in the word options of jaws. I think it’s related to office use only, but I am not sure. I found that, while that was checked, footnote numbers did not show up in text, though speech might well have read them, I usually work with a braille display, so it was absolutely essential for me to have the footnote numbers showing. Once I unchecked that box, note numbers came back as usual. Hope this helps, Takis

If you want to mute Jaws entirely, you can do this by pressing Jaws Key + Spacebar followed by Shift + S As soon as you press this key combination Jaws will be totally muted until you again press Jaws Key + Spacebar followed by S which restores full speech. As for the keyboard shortcut which didn't work to bring up Jaws, you should first go to your Jaws shortcut on the desktop, press Alt + Enter to bring up the properties and tab twice to check if somehow the keyboard shortcut you set was removed. If you hear the following: Shortcut key: Hot key Control + Alt + J To define the hotkey Type the keystroke combination. Then your keyboard shortcut is set, if so not sure why it didn't work, but as Brian suggested, maybe delete it and reassign it. Personally I prefer Control + Shift + J, somehow I find it easier to press that key combination than Control + Alt + J, but that is very subjective. Also keep in mind that reloading Jaws is not instant, when I just tried it it took about 7 or 8 seconds before Jaws started speaking after I pressed the keyboard shortcut. One alternative to bring up Jaws was already given, press Windows + R and type Jaws2021 (or whatever your version is), make sure you don't insert a space between Jaws and the version number, it has to be all without spaces. You can also press Windows Key + M, I often do it twice just to be sure, this minimizes all programs and takes me to the desktop. As long as Jaws is the only shortcut you have which starts with J you can then just press J and enter and Jaws should also start. Lastly, if you are using Windows 10, you should be able to simply press the Windows key to bring up the search box and type "JFW" which is the name of the program file, jfw.exe. Don't include the .exe, just type JFW and press enter, for me this also starts Jaws. This would, however, potentially be a problem on a machine with 2 or more Jaws versions since the application files are all called JFW.exe. I assume it would still work, but which version of Jaws you get is probably anybody's guess. But if as you say you only have 1 Jaws version on your computer this should also work and strictly by how many keys you have to press it is easier than Windows Key + R and typing Jaws2021 or Jaws2020. There are many ways in Windows 10 to achieve what you are trying to accomplish. Below is the method I use to create a new shortcut for JAWS, should my existing JAWS shortcut should be deleted by me or, removed by Windows. 1. Highlight the line of text below and copy it to the Clipboard: C:\Program Files\Freedom Scientific\JAWS\2018 This is the path statement, which will take you directly to the folder where the JAWS.EXE file for JAWS 18 is located. 2. Press WINDOWS KEY+R, to open the "Run" dialogue box. In the edit field, paste the text from the Clipboard, and press ENTER. Windows opens the new location. JAWS will speak the entire path statement to where the jfw.exe, is located. 3. Type"jfw" (without the quotes). JAWS will say, "jfw.exe". 4. Either, tap the Applications key, the key to the left of the right CTRL key or, press SHIFT+F10, to open the "Context Menue". 5. Tap the DOWN ARRO key, until the "Send To" submenue is highlighted, and tap the RIGHT ARROW KEY, TO OPEN IT or, press the letter "N" (without the quotes), to perform both steps at once. JAWS will say "Bluetooth device", which is the first item in the "Send To" submenue. 5. Either tap the DOWN ARROW KEY, until "Desktop (Creat shortcut)" is highlighted or, Tap the letter "d" (without the quotes), which will immediately highlight the item. 6. Press ENTER, and the new shortcut will appear on the Desktop. 7. Tap the letter "J", to highlight the newly created shortcut. JAWS will say "jfw.exe - shortcut". 8. Tap the F2 KEY, to open the edit field to edit the new shortcut. 9. Tap the DELETE KEY, to remove the existing text. 10. Type "JAWS 2018", and press ENTER, to accept the new shortcut for JAWS. 11. To add a shortcut key for JAWS, Press ALT+ENTER, to open the properties for the JAWS shordcut. 12. Tap the TAB key, until JAWS says, "Shortcut key: Hot key". 13. Tap the letter "J" (without the quotes. The CTRL and alt keys, are added by default. If you want to use a different keystroke shortcut, for example, CTRL+SHIFT+J, you would need to enter the keystroke combination manually. HTH Dave ----- Original Message -----

Have a blessed day and don’t work too hard. Kevin and Jilly the flying doggie |

At that point Jaws is completely muted and Jaws Key + Spacebar followed by S will restore ful lspeech. I was almost certain earlier when I tried this Jaws Key + Spacebar followed by Shift + S worked directly, but now I am also getting the message "not available in full speech mode" and I have to first go to speech on demand before I can use the layered keystroke with Shift + S to fully mute Jaws. -----Original Message----- From: main@jfw.groups.io <main@jfw.groups.io> On Behalf Of Sharon Sent: Sunday, November 15, 2020 9:55 AM To: main@jfw.groups.io Subject: Re: Jaws command question I tried this out: When I press jaws and space bar and then shift s I get not available in full speech mode. While watching a video, use insert+space then s and jaws will be silent unless you press a reading command like insert+up arrow. When the video is done, press insert+space then s again and Jaws will say full speech and you'll be back in business. There was something odd going on with Jaws 2019 and 2020 on my system where none of the hotkeys on my desktop worked. So far with Jaws 2021 they are working again. Otherwise, the Windows+r then JawsXXXX where the x's are replaced with your jaws version works quite well. Richard "The Hitch Hiker's Guide to the Galaxy has this to say on the subject of flying. So I turned Jaws using insert f4. Well after the video was finished I tried to turn Jaws on using control alt j, but it didn't work, my Dad had to click on Jaws. Now I know I have the command set, so I'm not sure why it doesn't work. Any ideas? Is there any other way I can turn Jaws on myself? If Jaws isn't working then my Braille display doesn't work either (not sure if this is normal or not) so I don't even know where I am. I hardly ever turn Jaws off, but I'd still like to know why the command to turn it on doesn't work. Running Jaws 2018. Look forward to any suggestions anyone can provide!! Thanks Madison |

He meant just jawsKey plus v. The main thing is looking at the footnote options to have it read. I'm not at my computer right now to check the exact wording.
