Hi Richard/all, Kevin may have had an option called “ui” something checked, which is located in the word options of jaws. I think it’s related to office use only, but I am not sure. I found that, while that was checked, footnote numbers did not show up in text, though speech might well have read them, I usually work with a braille display, so it was absolutely essential for me to have the footnote numbers showing. Once I unchecked that box, note numbers came back as usual. Hope this helps, Takis

Re: reading footnotes in a word document
No Kevin, press jawskey-v while in word, then type “ui”, it’s a third letter I do not know, I think it’s a g, but ui is for sure. Uncheck that box if checked. Then go back to the search box and type “footnotes” and make sure you select the option for jaws to read their text, not just report the reference. The 0 character must have come inadvertently in my message, and I suspect I was in a non-us keyboard by accident. Sorry. Please do let me know how you are progressing with this. Hope it helps, Greetings from Greece, Takis

Hi Kevin-all, The trick is, while in word, to invoke the word specific jaws settings with jawskey0v and search for “ui” this is uig or something and relates to a Microsoft setting. Uncheck the box, and make sure footnotes are set to be read in place. Then I think you will be ok. Hope this helps, Takis

Hi, I’m using the most recent version of Jaws2020 and word 2016. When just reading a word document is it possible to setup Jaws so footnotes are visable without pressing the windows key plus ;? I know when I move through the document someone else has created, I wouldn’t know there were footnotes unless I was told. I guess I could always look using the windows plus ; keys. Yet if someone is just reading a book on a recreational basis will they know there are footnotes? What about Kindle? Thanks, Kevin

If I go to the Windows 10 search box and start typing "Jaws", Jaws 2021 pops up, going to that file location does not take me to the executable file for Jaws, but to the Jaws 2021 shortcut in the start menu and one could very well copy this and paste it on the desktop. The executable for Jaws (any version) is called JFW.exe.

If you want to mute Jaws entirely, you can do this by pressing Jaws Key + Spacebar followed by Shift + S As soon as you press this key combination Jaws will be totally muted until you again press Jaws Key + Spacebar followed by S which restores full speech. As for the keyboard shortcut which didn't work to bring up Jaws, you should first go to your Jaws shortcut on the desktop, press Alt + Enter to bring up the properties and tab twice to check if somehow the keyboard shortcut you set was removed. If you hear the following: Shortcut key: Hot key Control + Alt + J To define the hotkey Type the keystroke combination. Then your keyboard shortcut is set, if so not sure why it didn't work, but as Brian suggested, maybe delete it and reassign it. Personally I prefer Control + Shift + J, somehow I find it easier to press that key combination than Control + Alt + J, but that is very subjective. Also keep in mind that reloading Jaws is not instant, when I just tried it it took about 7 or 8 seconds before Jaws started speaking after I pressed the keyboard shortcut. One alternative to bring up Jaws was already given, press Windows + R and type Jaws2021 (or whatever your version is), make sure you don't insert a space between Jaws and the version number, it has to be all without spaces. You can also press Windows Key + M, I often do it twice just to be sure, this minimizes all programs and takes me to the desktop. As long as Jaws is the only shortcut you have which starts with J you can then just press J and enter and Jaws should also start. Lastly, if you are using Windows 10, you should be able to simply press the Windows key to bring up the search box and type "JFW" which is the name of the program file, jfw.exe. Don't include the .exe, just type JFW and press enter, for me this also starts Jaws. This would, however, potentially be a problem on a machine with 2 or more Jaws versions since the application files are all called JFW.exe. I assume it would still work, but which version of Jaws you get is probably anybody's guess. But if as you say you only have 1 Jaws version on your computer this should also work and strictly by how many keys you have to press it is easier than Windows Key + R and typing Jaws2021 or Jaws2020. Sent: Sunday, November 15, 2020 3:57 PM To: 'JAWS Discussion List' Subject: Use of Headings, or Rather Lack Thereof, in Groups.IO Discussion Lists
Hi all,
I have come to really value the various Groups.IO lists related to accessibility, including this one. However, one thing that has always irked me is how clunky and inefficient navigation is on the web pages where you access discussion strings on individual topics. Other than a single level 4 heading just above the initial question, there is no use of headings for replies. Appropriate use of headings here would significantly enable more efficient navigation by screen reader users.
Previously, I had a few workarounds on web pages for reading through discussions. If using Edge, I could put it in immersive reader view and that helped. But with the newest version of Windows 10, immersive reader seems to have disappeared for some pages and remained for others. I even figured out that I could search for the number sign with Control F and then F3 to get to the top of each response because each one used to start with a message number, but no longer. So now, I am stuck endlessly down arrowing through the discussions. This is a very inefficient way to navigate web pages.
I emailed the Groups. IO tech support people with this concern several months ago and they never responded. Because I had figured out some personal workarounds, and this is a free service, so I suppose you get what you pay for, I never made a second attempt to contact them. But my workarounds no longer work, and navigation is very tedious.
I am sure that those who run Groups.IO are people of goodwill. I imagine too that they are unaware that well-placed insertion of headings greatly facilitates navigation by screen reader users.
So, a couple of questions. Should list administrators contact the Groups.IO developers with this concern to ask that they make better use of headings on the web pages? Or if others on this list agree that better use of headings would greatly improve our ability to use Groups.IO more efficiently, is there a way we can advocate as a group, versus sending the occasional solitary email complaint that ultimately goes unanswered?
Ideally, on the web pages, each original question and the responses would be tagged with a heading. On the daily digest, “New topics” and “new replies” would both have headings. However, adding headings to the web pages is the biggest priority.
I want to emphasize that I wouldn’t expend time on this if I didn’t value the service. It is an excellent resource. But that doesn’t mean there is no room for improvement.
Thanks to all who support asking that they do something about this. Also, sorry in advance for any inconvenience to you because I am sending this message to several lists, so you may see some repetition.
Regards, David

I’m assuming you are working on a laptop rather than a desktop. I ran into something similar to what you are talking about a few years ago when our agency switched to laptops for teleworking. I had to change the keyboard setting to standard or something similar. I honestly don’t remember if it was a JAWS setting or a Windows setting. Perhaps someone else will know how to change the keyboard and can share. Good luck.

Yes, the issue is very annoying. After Dell does an update, a Dell update and not a Windows update, the mouse touch pad gets re activated. Go into control panel and under mouse you will find a setting to turn off the touch pad. On my dell the setting is only available under the mouse tab in control panel. On some Dell’s it may be easier to find. The setting is not easy to locate with JAWS so if sighted assistance is available this will save time. JAWS does read the items in the mouse area so perhaps with a little extra work with JAWS you should be able to control the function. It is a check box.

I have had numerous laptops over the years and the “mouse” area always causes problems… Often times I inadvertently touch the mouse area and JAWS loses focus. Do most users turn off the mouse and connect an external mouse if sighted users want to utilize a mouse? Any input would be appreciated…
Thanks in advance, Mark

Did you ask them to upgrade? I’d be really surprised if they won’t give you the new version of jaws. Especially if it’s interfering with your job.

I am a federal government employee, so downloading newer versions of jaws unfortunately isn’t an option for me. Are there any possible workaround or is this just something I’m going to have to deal with? Honestly the worst of the two issues is the alt plus other keystrokes not working. Does anyone know why this would be?

Yes Canvas itself is accessible with JAWS2020. I have not tried it with JAWS2021 yet so I can't comment there.
