Turns out I didn't have a hot key set, which would explain why it didn't work.
Thanks everyone!!

Just a bit more about Full speech, speech on demand and speech muted:
As Jasmine pointed out, pressing Jaws Key + Spacebar followed by S invokes
Speech on Demand which limits what Jaws will speak and it is something braille
display users often use because they want less speech, but still some speech.
If you want to mute Jaws entirely, you can do this by pressing Jaws Key +
Spacebar followed by Shift + S As soon as you press this key combination Jaws
will be totally muted until you again press Jaws Key + Spacebar followed by S
which restores full speech.

As for the keyboard shortcut which didn't work to bring up Jaws, you should
first go to your Jaws shortcut on the desktop, press Alt + Enter to bring up the
properties and tab twice to check if somehow the keyboard shortcut you set was
removed. If you hear the following:
Shortcut key: Hot key
Control + Alt + J
To define the hotkey Type the keystroke combination.
Then your keyboard shortcut is set, if so not sure why it didn't work, but as
Brian suggested, maybe delete it and reassign it. Personally I prefer Control +
Shift + J, somehow I find it easier to press that key combination than Control +
Alt + J, but that is very subjective.
Also keep in mind that reloading Jaws is not instant, when I just tried it it
took about 7 or 8 seconds before Jaws started speaking after I pressed the
keyboard shortcut.

One alternative to bring up Jaws was already given, press Windows + R and type
Jaws2021 (or whatever your version is), make sure you don't insert a space
between Jaws and the version number, it has to be all without spaces.
You can also press Windows Key + M, I often do it twice just to be sure, this
minimizes all programs and takes me to the desktop. As long as Jaws is the only
shortcut you have which starts with J you can then just press J and enter and
Jaws should also start.
Lastly, if you are using Windows 10, you should be able to simply press the
Windows key to bring up the search box and type "JFW" which is the name of the
program file, jfw.exe. Don't include the .exe, just type JFW and press enter,
for me this also starts Jaws. This would, however, potentially be a problem on a
machine with 2 or more Jaws versions since the application files are all called
JFW.exe. I assume it would still work, but which version of Jaws you get is
probably anybody's guess. But if as you say you only have 1 Jaws version on your
computer this should also work and strictly by how many keys you have to press
it is easier than Windows Key + R and typing Jaws2021 or Jaws2020.

Best regards,
Sieghard

Insert+ , then s is a toggle between speak on command or full speech.
While watching a video, use insert+space then s and jaws will be silent unless
you press a reading command like insert+up arrow.
When the video is done, press insert+space then s again and Jaws will say full
speech and you'll be back in business.

There was something odd going on with Jaws 2019 and 2020 on my system where none
of the hotkeys on my desktop worked.
So far with Jaws 2021 they are working again.
Otherwise, the Windows+r then JawsXXXX where the x's are replaced with your jaws
version works quite well.

To help you better, I have a couple of questions for you. First, do you have any
other versions of JAWS on your computer? If so, it may be that the shortcut is
only set for the previous version. Another thing is that if you want to mute
speech, you can press Insert+Space, then the letter S. Hope this helps!

Hi all,
Today I was watching a Youtube video, and Jaws kept talking so I couldn't hear
the people in the video very well. So I turned Jaws using insert f4.
Well after the video was finished I tried to turn Jaws on using control alt j,
but it didn't work, my Dad had to click on Jaws. Now I know I have the command
set, so I'm not sure why it doesn't work. Any ideas? Is there any other way I
can turn Jaws on myself? If Jaws isn't working then my Braille display doesn't
work either (not sure if this is normal or not) so I don't even know where I am.
I hardly ever turn Jaws off, but I'd still like to know why the command to turn
it on doesn't work. Running Jaws 2018. Look forward to any suggestions anyone
can provide!! Thanks Madison

Hi David,. Thanks for the reply.
I have been away for the past day and 1/2, thus I am getting back to you now.

I will answer your question to the best of my knowledge, but your questions, as I read it, misses the point of my original email.
The original email in my terms and being brief "jaws2021 and Norton security 2020 have issues working together and thus norton security 2020 deletes jaws.' The author of that email said 'no problem, just install Windows Defender"
Well, to me that is a BIG problem due to my many years of reliance on this software and most of its functions.

I need to keep Norton. It is my warm and fuzzy blanket... security, password management and many utilities.
Jaws2021, if what I read is true, did something differently to make Norton act this way. It has never happened before during many years of upgrades.

As said in a previous email, I will talk to Norton, and the I will talk to Jaws personnel.

Finally, to your question... the downside of Norton is that it is not doing a great job providing accessibility from my own perspective and what I have read on this list over the years.
That's when my strategic use of sighted volunteers is used.

Hi for people who are having issues with JAWS 2021 and virus software
such as Norton and Mcaffee, there is a solution to this problem!

Apparently, from what I'm reading in the thread, the virus programs
are treating JAWS like it's a Trojan ,malware or a virus. The software
removes JAWS.

Once they are removed, enable Windows defender and this should solve
the issue.

Hope this helps.

If it isn't on the desktop, the shortcut key likely won't work. To create the shortcut do the following.

hit windows+r and type shell:appsfolder and press enter

Now, find your version of jaws, hit the applications key and choose create shortcut.  windows will complain and ask if you would like to put the shortcut on the desktop instead.  Do that and you're done.  You can right click on your new shortcut and choose properties, in there you will find where to put the shortcut key.  When you're in the edit box, hit the key combination you want and then tab to okay.

Hope this helps.

Hey there, Madison, BZ here again, grin! There's another way to do this in
windows ten. 1. Hit windows key plus r which will bring up the run dialog.
2. Type shell:appsfolder and then press enter. This will bring up a list
of all your applications. Down arrow until you hear jaws and then hit your
applications key and go down until you hear create shortcut and then press
enter. You'll get a message that will say something like do you want
windows to create a shortcut anyway and then press enter. I'm doing the
message off the top of my head so that's not the verbatim message you'll
hear but this method will create the jaws item on your desktop. If you're

Hi Dan. Thanks for the reply.
I have been off the grid for the past 33 hours.

I am a long-long time user of Norton. Most of the time as a sighted person,
but for at least the last 8 years as a fully blind user.

Their software does a great job of protecting my PC from 'bad' things
happening, and when they included a password manager in their product a few
years ago, I remained a very happy and loyal customer.
Their software is not accessible friendly, but live with it by having a
sighted volunteer assist.

I am not familiar with the function you are talking about, but will call
Norton Help Desk and hopefully get a good, workable solution from them.

Thanks again.

Hi,
Some security software is like a Toyota Camry and others like a Lexus.
Both are good just depends on the depth of comfort and features you need or
want. Norton is like the Lexus and I don't think you need to abandon them.
Nortons should have a place where you can tell it to ignore files and or
programs each and every time they are executed. Norton's is doing its job
but sometimes it gets over zealous. Look around your program and find the
place you can exclude files from being labeled as trojans or malware.

Subject: JAWS 2020 and virus software

Hi for people who are having issues with JAWS 2021 and virus software such
as Norton and Mcaffee, there is a solution to this problem!

Apparently, from what I'm reading in the thread, the virus programs are
treating JAWS like it's a Trojan ,malware or a virus. The software removes
JAWS.

Once they are removed, enable Windows defender and this should solve the
issue.

Hope this helps.

moderated getting Jaws on the desktop

Madison Martin

Hi all,
I went to my desktop and the Jaws shortcut doesn't seem to be on there. I went
into the search box and found Jaws, but when I pressed shift f10 to create a
shortcut I got 5 options:
Run as administrator
Open file location
Unpin from taskbar
Pin to start
Uninstall

Can someone please tell me, what other way (s) can I create a shortcut for Jaws
on my desktop? Even though you've all provided me with other ways to start Jaws,
I'd still like to check and see if my shortcut key is still set or not. Thanks
Madison
