If you have NVDA installed, you’d have to change the startup keystroke for NVDA.

happens to you after installing Fusion or JAWS 2021, you need to do
the following to solve the problem.

Step 1, press Insert+6 on the number row to get into Settings Center.
Step 2, press ctrl+shift+D to switch to the default settings.
Step 3, in the search box, type the word cut. Wait a few seconds
for the search results list to populate. You should see only one result.
It’s an unchecked checkbox with a label that reads as follows.

Avoid speech cutoff when using Bluetooth headphones or some sound cards.

If you tab away from that checkbox to read the explanatory text, you
should see some text that says

“Many modern Bluetooth headphones and speakers shut down after a
while of not receiving sound to conserve battery. If this check box
is selected, JAWS will keep them awake by constantly playing
silence. You will not hear anything, but your device will remain
active, resulting in more consistent speech.
Note that the battery of your headphones/speakers could drain faster
if you turn this on.
This check box is cleared by default.”

End of explanatory text.

Checking that checkbox will eliminate the speech cutoff. However,
the side effect is that some events will trigger a reduction in
speech volume, which can be troublesome if you’re only using a
laptop’s speakers. I compensated for this dip in volume by using
powered, wired external speakers.

Step 4, tab to the Apply button and press Enter or the space bar.
Step 5, tab to OK and press Enter to close Settings Center.

Note: The checkbox referenced in step 3 above is unchecked by
default in JAWS 2020 and Fusion 2020, and there is no speech cutoff.
So this is a bug which was apparently introduced in 2021 which needs
to be reported to Freedom Scientific.

I hope this helps you. Let me know if you have any questions.

Jim Pursley

I'm getting into this thread late.  Sorry if I repeat anything.

I've been using the  column and row marking protocol in Excel for a couple of JAWS iterations.  The quick settings for title reading override should indeed be off (mine is).

I'm assuming that your MLS spreadsheet does not mark column and row titles.

Here's what I do

You can do this from the Excel menus, too on the Formula tab. Just arrow down to define name and you'll find how to do it.  I only use the menu option to modify or delete titles I've already entered through the define name choice in Excel's applications key.

So go to the upper left cell of your spreadsheet (point the pc cursor there)

Open the applications key

Hit Define Name

Enter titleregion 1..cell address of the lower right cell.

Hit enter and you should be good to go

It's possible to set only row or only column titles but I've not done it in so long that I've forgotten.

You can set a Region II or III but you need to make it out of your title 1 range.

You  probably don't need to use the words titleregion (number) but I find it easiest as I don't have super complicated spreadsheets.

If your define name function doesn't work after you've clicked off the override selection in quick settings, you may have a protected sheet on your hands.  If so, just follow the instructions to save a copy.

The system I describe above is a major, major major (Catch 22 reference) improvement over the old system which required one to manipulate the quick settings.

Cheers.

Morning Marty,

You need to check the box to Run Jaws from the system tray, There are several ways to do this, below are a couple.
1. A. From the Jaws screen press the, Alt Key, press enter on, Options, and press enter on, Basics.
B. From the desktop press, Insert + J, to bring up the Jaws screen, press the, Alt Key, press enter on, Options, and press enter on, Basics.

2. Tab several times to, Run Jaws from system tray, checkbox press the spacebar to check this, now tab to, Okay, and press enter save / close.

3. You will have to unload Jaws and restart Jaws to make the change take affect, at least I had to do it this way.

of a minor annoyance.  The JAWS window is now in the group of open windows
when I Alt Tab through my open programs.  I was able to hide the JAWS window

but didn't with 2021.  Could someone remind me how to hide the JAWS window

To make changes like you want, you need to be in Excel first. Then insert V will bring up the options you are trying to find. In the edit field, type in the word title. Don't hit enter, the options will show up below. Arrow down and I think what you want is Define Name Column and Row Titles Override. If I remember correctly, you need to check that box in order to avoid hearing the row and column headings. Sounds backwards I know but try it. If it doesn't work, you can go back and change it back.

You didn't state any particular program so, while in the program or application press, Insert + V, to open Jaws quick settings.  Now navigate down through all the various settings to see if any column and row settings options are available.

Better yet, install silenzio, then you can still use audio ducking.

On 11/12/2020 18:58, Tom Lange wrote:
Hi all,

Immediately after installing JAWS 2021 this morning, I noticed that
speech at the beginning of words was being cut off when moving around
in dialog boxes, list views, et cetera. As you can well imagine, the
situation was intolerable and crazy-making . If this happens to you
after installing Fusion or JAWS 2021, you need to do the following to
solve the problem.

Step 1, press Insert+6 on the number row to get into Settings Center.
Step 2, press ctrl+shift+D to switch to the default settings.
Step 3, in the search box, type the word cut. Wait a few seconds for
the search results list to populate. You should see only one result.
It’s an unchecked checkbox with a label that reads as follows.

Avoid speech cutoff when using Bluetooth headphones or some sound cards.

If you tab away from that checkbox to read the explanatory text, you
should see some text that says

“Many modern Bluetooth headphones and speakers shut down after a while
of not receiving sound to conserve battery. If this check box is
selected, JAWS
will keep them awake by constantly playing silence. You will not hear
anything, but your device will remain active, resulting in more
consistent speech.
Note that the battery of your headphones/speakers could drain faster
if you turn this on.
This check box is cleared by default.”

End of explanatory text.

Checking that checkbox will eliminate the speech cutoff. However, the
side effect is that some events will trigger a reduction in speech
volume, which can be troublesome if you’re only using a laptop’s
speakers. I compensated for this dip in volume by using powered, wired
external speakers.

Step 4, tab to the Apply button and press Enter or the space bar.
Step 5, tab to OK and press Enter to close Settings Center.

Note: The checkbox referenced in step 3 above is unchecked by default
in JAWS 2020 and Fusion 2020, and there is no speech cutoff. So this
is a bug which was apparently introduced in 2021 which needs to be
reported to Freedom Scientific.

I hope this helps you. Let me know if you have any questions.

Hi. Need to use a accessible free screen capture software for windows server 2019. Need to capture the screen, then save them as a png or other images. Need to do this for a network lab and to show my trainer what I have done inside windows server 2019 inside hyper v manager.

Any ideas.

Have tried different software. Either not accessible or not able. Unless have to create a auto hot key script to do this.

Thanks.

Hi Kevin-all,

The trick is, while in word, to invoke the word specific jaws settings with jawskey0v and search for “ui” this is uig or something and relates to a Microsoft setting. Uncheck the box, and make sure footnotes are set to be read in place. Then I think you will be ok.

                                                            Hope this helps,

Hi, I’m using the most recent version of Jaws2020 and word 2016. When just reading a word document is it possible to setup Jaws so footnotes are visable without pressing the windows key plus ;? I know when I move through the document someone else has created, I wouldn’t know there were footnotes unless I was told. I guess I could always look using the windows plus ; keys. Yet if someone is just reading a book on a recreational basis will they know there are footnotes? What about Kindle? Thanks, Kevin

Mine did not so I went to the website.
