Hank,

  In Windows 10:

Go to “Settings”

Go to “Ease of Access”

Tab once to get to list of items under “ease of Access”

Arrow down to “Interaction”

This will give you a list of four items

The top one is Speech

Tab over to the list of items to set up Speech Dictation.

Here you can turn on dictation and make other selections.

There are other options which you can access from this screen or under the “Time & Language” area in settings. This also has a ”speech” settings area.

You can leave dictation on  or allow for sleep until you call for it.

Hope this helps.

Dan

Hello everyone,

I have a client who wishes to use some dictation software with JAWS.  We have tried the new Dictate add-in with Word and JAWS.  It works reasonably well, but seems to lack some of the “bells and whistles” like literal numbers or word and correction.  But for get thoughts on a page and going back and “cleaning up, it is a good choice.

I get very mixed reviews on Dragon Naturally speaking and JAWS.  I read everything from it works well to they don’t play nice together and it is difficult to set up.

Wondering about experiences anyone may have had trying to use Dragon with JAWS.  My person is running JAWS 2020, and Office 365 on a Windows 10 computer.  If it does work what do we have to do to make it so?  Also a question of a headset mic vs tabletop.  My client doesn’t care for headsets, but if a must have, a recommendation for a reasonably priced one.

Thanks

Hi, Kevin.

MS Word actually has a number of features to protect you from various threats that are spread via Word files. One of these features

 (opens in a new tab)

in the read-only mode so it can’t affect your computer negatively.

This may be the reason why your documents always open in the read-only mode. Turning this option off should fix the issue for you.

list of 2 items

1. Open MS Word on your computer.

2. Click on the Options option at the lower-left corner and it’ll open the settings menu.

3. Click on the General tab in the left sidebar if you aren’t already there. Then on the right-hand side menu, scroll down and find the option that says

Open e-mail attachments and other uneditable files in reading view.

4. Uncheck the box for the option and click on OK to save the changes.

5. The Word files you’ve received as email attachments should now open in regular mode letting you edit them however you want.

Yes, it certainly becomes editable with save as. Another thing I do it to hit alt-f followed by I then e. Also, if the files comes up but is not opened, I hit alt, then escape and becomes readable and editable.

When you open an attachment, it is in a temporary file location.

I think if you then do a save as, it might be editable.

Or just select all and paste into a new blank document.

I'm not sure this is the correct way to do this, but if you have the file,
navigate to and alt+enter on it,
tab to and spacebar on the unblock button,
tab to and spacebar on the ok button.

It depends on what you want to do, but general meeting access with Zoom is
actually quite easy.

If you are sent a meeting link, it's easy to join a meeting and participate.

You first have to download and install the Zoom app.

A list of most-used Zoom key strokes can be obtained via Alt H--the help
menu.

I hope this helps at least a little.

Hello, after using a personal meeting ID they're always using the same link.

If you schedule them under separate meeting nights which the system creates
for you then no. And those links are available as long as you want them for.

If you're using a meeting ID that you let the system create for you. And if
you want them to convene with the same link, just scheduled a meeting for
three hours. And I'm for sure you'll be good to go.

moderated How Do You Access Google Calendar Notifications with JAWS?

Dear Listers:

I have listened to Freedom Scientific’s webinar about Google Calendar.  I know how to create an event and know how to set the way I want notifications to appear—email, Desktop or Alert, using Settings.  The funny thing that is happening is this.  I have read that there are three ways of receiving Google Calendar notifications—by e-mail, desktop or Alert, but when I am in the Settings Menu and go to set the way in which I want to receive notifications, in the combo box in the Settings menu where I make my selection, there is no e-mail designation.  When I am in the Settings menu and come to where you set your notifications I hit the Enter key to turn Forms Mode on.  I currently have it set to Desktop notifications.  I would like to set it to e-mail notifications but when I arrow up, instead of saying “E-Mail,” JAWS says, “Off.”  I don’t understand.  I have tried adjusting this setting using both Microsoft Edge and with my default Browser, Google Chrome, but nothing is working.  Can any of you out there who use Google Calendar help and tell me how you receive your notifications using JAWS?

I just tried control shift e on Outlook 2013 and a new folder was created.

Try the command while in the inbox and if it does not work then try creating the folder while in the list of folders.

Yes, Control+Shift+E works also in the latest version of Outlook from Office 365 just as Control+Shift+V still is the shortcut for moving messages.

Control+Shift+N starts a new note, this is one of the shortcuts which lets you create a new folder in File Explorer in Windows, but it's not creating a folder in Outlook.

I can't tell any individual "how loose" to be with allowing remote content, and if you read that page you'll see that the granularity with which you can regulate it is significant.  You can go all the way to "wide open/allow all" or virtually anywhere in between.

I went "wide open" myself long ago.  But that's my personal choice.  Read what is on the referenced page and make the tweak the settings in a way that makes you comfortable yet minimizes unnecessary nagging.

I tried to report a reproduceable serious bug with Windows Mail and JFW Beta on my system.

The report form seemed pretty unstable – I filled it in but I am not sure if it successfully submitted. All that happened when I hit the send button is that the page reloaded with all the form fields I had  filled in blank.

Basically

  1. Load Windows Mail under Windows 10.

Create or reply to a message.

Type some text in the message body. You get typing echo whilst typing but it is impossible on my system to read the typed text using any of the normal JFW reading commands.

This makes it impossible to edit text as any attempt to review the text simply results in JFW announcing Message.

This fault does not appear with Jaws 2020, Windows Narrator or NVDA.

If anybody else can reproduce this bug could I ask that they try to report it as well as JFW beta is currently  unusable for me with one of the  core Windows apps on my system.
