Re: Outlook Rules
Marie <magpie.mn@...>
I am glad to hear this from someone else, because it is odd and seems to be
something connected with the Jaws list alone.
I use Thunderbird and/or WLM rather than Outlook so it is not application
connected.
With WLM the rule works fine but on TB some of the posts go to my inbox and
some to the Jaws list folder and I have never been able to discover why these
posts differ. In my case, it is annoying and I keep trying to find a solution
but it is not too bad since the majority of the posts do go to the correct
folder. But like other things of this sort, I want to find out why it happens
and how to solve the problem.
By the way, I am running the latest Jaws 2020 and Win 10 2004. My email
provider is Gmail and I created the rule on the Gmail website rather than within
the email client.

Re: Voice assist on a laptop
Don Mauck
FYI for all, I’ve got Cisco Any connect running to do my job. However, when I disconnected the VPN, Voice assist actually worked correctly. Seems like the VPN was blocking JAWS from hitting whatever server it’s using. I’ve no Oracle doesn’t block very many if any other JAWS functions so I’m curious if I need to ask for a White list on a specific process/file or is this a known issue.

The laptop mike should work, check in your sound settings to be sure that the mic is selected as the input device. You can also run a test on the microphone through the sound settings

Re: Setting Place Marker in Word not Workingq
David Kingsbury
Hi all,
Temporary placemarkers are used in Word for extended text selection. Press Control Windows K at the start of a selection and press Insert Spacebar together and then M at the end of the selection to highlight the extended text. It is very useful for highlighting large chunks of text and serves a different function than bookmarks, and as others said, you can only do a single temporary placemarker in Word while you can make them permanent on the web.
I am having the same problem. For some reason, doing the extended text selection works for me in some documents and not others. In those where it does not work, Alt tabbing away from and back to it does not help. I notice this with both JAWS 2020 and the 2021 beta.

Try running a repair, sounds like something got corrupted, because you were doing everything else right.

Should my laptop microphone work with voice assist? Currently I get no response when I say “sharky,” even with the setting set to use that command. When I use the command as a single command, I‘m told “nothing was herd”.

Screen Shade Will Not Turn Off
Callum Stoneman
Hi all,
I regularly use the screen shade while working to save battery on my laptop. However, occasionally I need to have a sighted person look at my screen either face to face or via a screen share on Teams (yes, the screen shade causes the screen to appear blank when sharing it as well).
Sometimes, when I go to turn my screen shade off, it just will not turn off at all and the screen remains black. It doesn’t matter whether I turn it off via the keyboard shortcut, the three finger triple-tap, the quick settings menu, nothing works. Even quitting JAWS entirely stops every other function of JAWS, apart from the screen shade. JAWS continues to announce, “Screen Shade off” or “Screen Shade on”, there are no errors. The only way I can get my screen back is to reboot the computer.
Anyone else experienced this and know of a way to avoid it happening?
I’ve checked my brightness and even turning this to 100% did not change anything, so I know it isn’t that my brightness is too low for anyone to see or anything like that.
I’m using Windows 10, the latest version of JAWS Professional 2020 and a Surface Pro 3 laptop I believe. Callum

Re: How to interact with the tree view of OneDrive Choose Folders dialog box

Hi Delaunay,
toggle quoted messageShow quoted text
Unfortunately, screen readers are not reading the names of the items which you navigate the tree using the standard keystrokes. You can work around this problem using Jaws' touch cursor, which is the equivalent of NVDA's object navigation. You can use the touch cursor to move the focus to the desired item in the tree, return to the PC cursor, and then use the normal keystrokes to open/close the item or check or uncheck it. To switch to the touch cursor, press shift + numpad plus, or SHIFT+CAPS LOCK+SEMICOLON if using the laptop keyboard layout. You can then navigate the tree using right/left arrow. Move to the item you want to have focus, and press Enter or Spacebar so that the item becomes the focus. Press numpad plus twice to return to using the PC cursor. You can then open/close the item or change whether it is checked. If you want to move the focus to another item, and interact with it, just go round this loop again. David.

if you want to download the guide, when you are on a link to the guide, open its context menu, and choose either save link as or save target as, depending on which web browser you are using. David.

How to interact with the tree view of OneDrive Choose Folders dialog box
Delaunay Christophe <christophe.delaunay@...>
Hi all,
Some time ago, when I right-clicked on the OneDrive For Business icon in the systray of my windows 10 computer, I could open the Settings dialog box, then hit the “Choose folders” button. In the Choose folders dialog box, I could select/deselect the folders I wanted to synchronize on my local disk.
The folders were presented to me as a tree view. However, I don’t know how long ago this tree view is not rendered anymore by Jaws 2020.
I tried to work around this problem with an alternate screen reader. This other screen reader also renders the tree view as apparently empty. With this alternate screen reader, another navigation mode they call “object navigation” I can see the top folders of my OneDrive For Business space but it is quite uneasy to select/deselect them. In addition, I cannot figure out how to expand one element of the tree view, in other words, a folder in which I’d like to sync subfolders only, even though the screen reader says it is “collapsed”.
Does anyone know of another accessible way to synchronize some parts only of a OneDrive For Business space please?
Many thanks in advance. Have a nice day. Chris D
