moderated Jaws and opening files from a folder by date

John J. Fioravanti, Jr.

I am using Jaws 18 with Windows 10. This question may be a bit strange, but here it goes: after my legal assistant sets my folders in drop box (where I store my legal materials) to have the files appear by dates, rather than by name, it appears that as soon as I open the folder and click a file, the files again appear by name instead of dates. Is there possibly a setting that is causing this unusual behavior?

Thanks.

I was gifted an eBook that someone really wants me to read. It’s an Amazon Kindle book. I seem to remember JAWS not doing well with such books a while back, but I don’t know if it has improved. What about on the iPhone? Is that any better?

If anyone has any advice on how to best read this eBook, please share your ideas.

If you have the subscription you are entitled to whatever is the latest version of Jaws as long as you pay your subscription.

In my opinion it's always sworthwhile to keep up-to-date with Jaws unless of course you are using NVDA. The fact is that eventually you have to get caught up because Windows 10 changes so quickly and even with Office features change and are added all the time especially if you use Office 365 and there is simply no good reason to not always run the latest version.

Jaws is not quite as it used to be where a new version meant possibly major new features, nowadays sometimes these features are added half way through the year and in any case, if you don't upgrade on a regular bases or, if you live in the US, use Jaws via the subscription based model, you eventually have to pay hundreds of Dollars to get caught up, you might as well pay the $7 or $8 a month or whatever the subscription costs or if you use th eolder 2-year license model by the new SMA right after you use your last one. For the Home version I believe it's $120 every 2 years which is $5 a months, quite a few people spend this on coffee every day, if you divide it by the number of days it's like 16.66 Cents a day and having the use of Jaws is certainly worth a couple of quarters every 3 days to me.

The reality is that let's say you decide it isn't worth it.

Next year, when you might decide that 2022 is worth it, you will end up paying for both as I understand it.

I'd be happy to be wrong.

This is where buying the SMA can save money in the long run.

Hi,

Real improvements can be subjective.

Depends on how you use the program and with what different types of software.

For me I stay updated for the following reasons:

OS systems and programs are changing rapidly and with hnumerous updates.  Falling behind with JAWS can risk problems with the software interacting with the latest updates of apps and even the OS itself.

Each version of JAWS seems to get a bit snappier and responsive although , to be sure, problems remain and always will with any piece of software.

New features are constantly added and modified.  Each new version offers more accessibility with one or more programs.

I am not advocating that one must keep JAWS always with the latest version , cost and other issues prevent this, but I have found it helpful to do so.

As I said updates can be subjective because we all use the program in different ways and with diverse pieces of software.  JAWS 2021 does a better job with Outlook than past versions however if I don’t use Outlook I may say not much difference.

Does this make all clear as mud.  😊

I have been using Myfax.com for many years, but this is not a free service. I just switched to an internet based phone system at my retail store and it includes fax service through SRFax.com, not sure about their pricing, but most of these fax services work in a way where you simply send your fax by email to the PhoneNumber@FaxService.com where Faxservice.com refers to whichever service you use. For example, with Myfax I send to 12021234567@myfax.com, I can just write something in the email body or I can attach a PDF, Word, Excel or other document to the email and it will be sent. Within a few minutes after you send the email you get a return email which tells you if your fax was successfully sent or not.
For incoming faxes these services give you your own fax number, with Myfax I used to have a toll free number and if somebody sends you a fax to that number you get an email with the fax attached as a PDF file. Of course it's image based like any fax so you would have to run this through an OcR application or, if you use Jaws, you can use Convenient Ocr to recognize it.

And anybody can currently download the Jaws 2021 public beta which I assume is pretty close to the final release going by how things were in years past. The nice thing with Jaws is that you don't have to remove or upgrade your existing version, Jaws 2021 Public Beta can run and live on your system happily alongside Jaws 2020 or whatever you have and if something is not as you expect you can always unload Jaws 2021 and reload Jaws 2020.

I did a lot of trial and error with the Read Aloud settings and found the Voice Options.

There are a lot of voices.

The ones that start with Microsoft, then a name, then Online Natural are the better sounding voices, which unless someone can say how to get them installed for Jaws, probably are not going to be available since they are Microsoft’s “Online” voices.

I still use calibre to convert kindle books to plain text (note this
requires that you keep kindle stunted at a fairly old version as
recent ones have DRM that calibre can't deal with).

Hi, Adrian. You won't get any verbalization from JAWS. What CONTROL plus SHIFT plus B does is, if you SHIFT plus TAB once, you will see that it adds a Hidden Favorites button to the tool bar. If you press CONTROL plus SHIFT plus B again, it removes this button from the tool bar. The way to get to this tool bar is:

1. Open Edge to your Start Page.
2. Go to the top of the page.
3. Press SHIFT plus TAB.
4. If the Hidden Favorites toggle is on, there will be a Hidden Favorites button just before you SHIFT plus TAB to the Settings button.
5. If the Hidden Favorites toggle is off, all you will see when you SHIFT plus TAB is the Settings button.

Hi, Amanda. The following two Edge shortcuts may be helpful to you, especially the latter.

Ctrl + Shift + B
Show or hide the favorites bar

Ctrl + Shift + O
Open Favorites management

Hey ya'll,

I recently gave up the IE ghost, and find Edge to be useable.

I was wondering, is there a keystroke or an easy way to access your favorites? For example, in IE, it was alt+a... but I don't see anything like that in Edge. I use my favorites a lot, so was hoping someone could point me in the right direction.

Thanks,
Amanda

Hi, Bill.

When I press control-shift-b, nothing seems to happen. I get no verbalization from JAWS, and I can't detect any change in behavior.

I'm relying on my favorites folder on the desktop to open Edge favorites, but I'd prefer to work from within Edge, if it's feasible.

Would you explain what I should look for when I press the shift-control-b command?

Thanks.

That's exactly what I needed to know, Marten: the alt-shift-b command. Thanks.

Adrian,

When the favorites bar is turned on, you can go to the favorites bar and access your favorites from there.

YYou can press alt-shift-b to set ffocus in the favorites bar if it is visable. If this does not work, press ctrl-shift-b again.

You can also go to this bar by pressing f6, but how many times f6 can
change:)

Regards, marten
