I think what I’m finding is all of the ways I can navigate quickly are not always available when they don’t test with jaws.

If anything, if they only tested with JAWS and not NVDA I'd actually be a bit more concerned due to the fact that JAWS has a tendency to guess what should be read with forms that may not properly conform to current standards. This is actually great for the user but can give false positives to the one doing the testing. As long as their code is properly written and marked up you should be OK.

OFten times, people try to develop accessibility without understanding how accessibility  tools are used by a disabled person. Generally, an accessible web site wil work with NVDA, JAWS and VoiceOver. Sometimes developers think that the only way blind users navigate is with the tab key.  Other times they don’t understand browse mode vs forms mode.
Is any of their site visible to non-paying client?

Jessica,

Well, it is either public beta 1 or public Beta 2.

Public beta 3 is due out any day now.

The official release of JAWS 2021 has not happened yet and will most likely happen next week.

That is what I am hearing as well.

I would guess in very early November.

Beta three is in private beta now and will be released publicly very soon.

Find out more on Wednesday evening on Main Menu Live as we have Eric Damery with us in hour 1 to talk about JAWS and its release.

Brian Hartgen will be with us in Hour 2 to talk about the many things available to us from Leasey.

Thanks for this.  The only thing that worked for me was to restart JAWS or to reboot.  I did not know about resetting the scripts with Insert Control Escape.  I hope to remember to try that next time.

Lately, I have noticed that when I hit the F2 key to edit a cell, JAWS reads the contents, but I cannot move through the contents of a cell. For example if I want to check the spelling of an entry, I usually hit F2 and arrow back and forth to see the spelling. I do the same thing if I want to check a formula. Am I missing a JAWS or Excel setting?

Clarence

I have had some of that myself. Try using that control home after you hit the key to edit the cell. It seems to go back to the beginning of the cell and you could then arrow to the right.

NFB

Maybe.

1. In Excel, go to advanced options: alt-f, then t, then a.

2. Tab to "allow editing directly in cells" and be sure it is not checked.

Good luck!

Ann Byrne

In addition to unchecking the "edit in cell" option, another thing I have done is uncheck the option for "auto completion."  The combination of these two things has resulted in a resolution for me.

Richard

From time to time I have this issue and have tried many things to correct it.  Sometimes they work and sometimes they do not work.  Please try the following:
1.  Go to the "VIEW" menu and zoom in or out.  75% and 100% seem to be the best zoom sizes.
2.  Press alt+space bar and try "Restore" if the window is maximized or try "Max" if the window is not maximized.
3.  Press insert+Escape or try insert+ctl+Escape to reset the JAWS scripts.
4.  If push comes to shove, I kill JAWS and restart it.
Most of the time, one of these methods will correct the problem.
Ron

I know that this has been discussed here before, but what was that check box that must be unchecked to allow editing in a cell in Excel again?  All that I get when pressing F2 from JAWS is "blank" when I try to read the text in a cell.  Also, my JAWS curser is stuck on the clock in the system tray.  I am using the JAWS 2020 and Excel 2007 and Windows 7.  Thanks.

Dean,

Are you sure the attachment is opening in a Microsoft office program outside your email client?  To your point, if I have an attachment open and it’s in protected view, I can hit Insert T to read the title and it will announced that it’s in protected view, then use one of the methods like F6 to get to the bar where I can hit the enable editing button. The reason I ask is that there is an annoying setting in Outlook that will open attachments in “preview”, which is actually showing a preview of the attachment within Outlook and, in my recollection, that won’t read at all.  It’s typically the first context menu option if you right click the attachment and, quite possibly, a default setting in Outlook.  I recall having to make an adjustment in Outlook Options somewhere to disable the preview.

Agree with Brian that the autocomplete doesn’t work as well as it did in the past, or at least in the way I would want it to. I find value in clearing out my autocomplete list at work if I’ve just done a project with a lot or random email addresses in int that I don’t normally use.  I do appreciate that autocomplete doesn’t’ pull in a large list of everyone in the exchange address book, as that would be a really long list for me., but I’m often surprised at how and when it pulls in familiar addresses I use regularly.  If I know an adders I have started to type is in my contacts or company address book, I’ll type a couple letters then use Control K to open the search dialog. It’s similar to the To: button Brian mentioned, but easier for me to access on the fly.  I’m not sure why Microsfot got rid of the old keyboard shortcut of alt period to jump to the To button.

Vaughn,

Let me try to describe what I see happening under Outlook 2016.  There appears to be some interaction between "who I've sent or received an e-mail to/from before" and the Address Book when you type a name rather than all or just a distinctive part of an e-mail address.  Why this is, or how to change it, I cannot explain.

I have never used Outlook to send a message to my partner, Jim.  However I have previously sent messages to another Jim and a Jill, too.  When I type the two characters Ji (note the capital J) I instantly get a dropdown list appearing with the other Jim and Jill, from which I can select either of the two, but my partners address does not appear.

Contrast that with what I get when I type the single character j (lower case).  What shows up is the two previously noted Jim and Jill, plus several additional e-mail addresses I've sent to before, all of which contain the letter j somewhere in them, but my partner's name and e-mail address is still not among the things shown.

Now, I've gone and sent my partner a message using only his e-mail address, but not fetching anything from the Address book.  When I next go to create a new message and type j into the To field the first item in the list is now his e-mail address, followed by all the others, so most recently sent, and exactly what was used in the sending, is at the top of the list of options.

Since doing all those tests, I opened Options when I was in the compose window, and activated the Empty Auto-Complete List.  After doing that, no e-mail addresses or names show up when I type a part or all of a name in the To field.  I can enter multiple names separated by semicolon.  If I hit Send, Outlook will begin asking me which address I want if there exists more than one for a given typed name, or just plugging in what's associated with it if there's one.

So, after all of that, I can say I don't get anything in the auto-complete dropdown list that acts like what it appears you and I were used to in the past.  When I need to select names from my address book I activate the button for the To/CC/BCC fields and use search and select in the dialog that comes up, as I know a number of the addresses I want to use, and would think should pre-populate in that autocomplete list, are not doing so.

The best explanation of how autocomplete works comes straight from the horse mouth:

Information about the Outlook AutoComplete list

Note well in the statement, "The list contains SMTP addresses, LegacyExchangeDN entries, and display names for people to whom you have sent mail previously."  (emphasis mine).

So, if you have just set up a new instance of Outlook, the building of the AutoComplete List starts from scratch (if you haven't imported a pre-existing one) so until you send messages to someone for the first time, they're not going to show up.

I find it odd that there isn't a use of the Address Book in generating the auto-complete list.  The article also goes into how you can import existing autocomplete lists from other Outlook instances, which I've never done.

Sorry for the length of this, but clearly autocomplete isn't what many of us think it should be.

Agreed, Brian.  So much is overdone on PowerPoint. I’m sure there could even be more that Prezi does than a fabulous PowerPoint, but I never saw a demo.  What I like is that I can get a copy of the PowerPoint afterward and at least try to read the slides, if needed.  I feared that Prezi would not be as simple to review after the presentation.

Because the presentation is static and boring.  PowerPoint "went multimedia" many, many years ago.  If you can't put together a dazzling presentation with PowerPoint it's absolutely not the fault of the software.  And that's not to take anything away from Prezi, which may be marvelous, too.

Ann,

Let me add to your mention of f6 that you then tab once. I can't remember the word you hear, but it's something like unprotect or clear or open. Press enter, and the file becomes unprotected. This method has worked consistently for me for some time.

Sometimes if you alt-tab away from the document and alt-tab back, you get results. another thing to try is f6. If you're lucky, that will take you to an edit button, and pressing that will free things up. Alt-f, then i, then e will also unprotect the document, but only if you can get alt-f to work.

good luck!

Hi,

Sorry so slow in getting back to you but I had a long weekend away from most technology.

Anyway, here’s how to change how JAWS reads graphics. I hope it helps you in the Grover app. It is how I have JAWS set on my PC and as I said I am able to use Grover efficiently.

1. Press Insert + j to open the JAWS Window, or press Alt + Tab to cycle through the open windows until you find the JAWS window.

2. Press Insert + v. JAWS opens the verbosity menu.

3. down-arrow about 10 or 11 times to graphics.

4. Press Spacebar to toggle between the choices, "labeled graphics, all, or none". If you want labeled graphics, stop when you hear JAWS say that, then

5. Press Enter to save your settings or Escape to cancel.

Much thanks,

StanB

I clicked on one, and it was the search button. I typed in something, and the search results were all unlabeled.

I use Grover. It’s accessible. I can search for, find, subscribe, unsubscribe, fast forward, rewind, and of course play and pause podcasts.

It’s available in the Microsoft store.
