moderated JAWS speaks random characters as I type

Jim Weiss

I have been encountering this issue for a while now and I was wondering if anyone else has had this experience.
JAWS 2020 (August build)
Windows 10 2004 fully patched, but not running 20H2.
This problem is mostly seen in Edge (Chromium and up to date), but does occur at times in other applications.
JAWS speaks random characters as I type. For example I can type the letter “A” but JAWS will speak another character, not necessarily a letter, it can be a number or symbol. Even if I type the same letter a second or third time JAWS will continue to speak random characters. What is actually being typed is the actual letter I am pressing.
This is a fresh install of Windows 10 and besides the drivers from Dell the only other software installed is Office 365. The machine is not cluttered up with dozens of installs nor is the registry cluttered with the bits of uninstalled apps.
I need to unload JAWS and reload it to fix the issue.
Dell blames Vispero. Vispero blames Microsoft and of course Microsoft blames them both and tells me to purchase a Surface and run Narrator.
Also, in Edge if I use the letter “H” to move by headings I will often get error messages saying that I am pressing the incorrect key, or I will get messages like “There are no frames on the page” or “There are no buttons on the page”.
The laptop is new (May of this year) and I am fairly new to JAWS, but not computers or screen readers. On a side note I am running Win10 ((build 2004), JAWS 2020 (August release) as a VM on my Mac Book and I don’t have this issue.
I would be interested to hear if anyone else has seen this issue.
TIA,

Jim Weiss

Hi,

I’ve used Bluetooth earphones with my iPhone, but not with a laptop  the headphone jack on my work laptop seems to be not working. I’m not finding any plug in earbuds or headphoens in my house that will work so I can hear JAWS.  I thought I could try pairing the earpiece I use with my iPhone. I turned off the Bluetooth connection on my iPhone and turned on Bleutooth in the laptop; however, I don’t see the earpiece showing up in the list, even though my earpiece is in pairing mode.    Am I going about this the correct way?  Should a basic, Bluetooth earpiece that works with an iPhone also work with a laptop or is there a difference?  I think this is a Plantronics earpiece, but I’m not positive.  It’s possible my company has some security restriction on Bluetooth, but I dread calling our helpdesk to ask.

I create groups just fine. Thankfully, JAWS now reads the group members list for me as I arrow up and down.  As others have said, you do need to go to the ribbon to hit the add members button. A submenu opens where  you choose where you want to search for members. You’ll be looking in Outlook contacts, if  this is a personal email account.  If you are at a company, you’d likely be adding from the Address Book. The only real downside to creating groups in outlook is that a person in your group has to  be a contact. In other words, you cannot just type a bunch of email addresses into the group.

Hello Group,

Up until recently, I had no real reason to create groups from my Contacts using Outlook. However, at this point, I’m involved with a number of activities within my community where this feature is something that would be convenient as a contact option.

I had spoken with Bill White about this and rather to use the ribbon commands, he suggested using Control/Shift/L where I create a group name. After identifying a group name, I tabbed one time  to the Members Table field, arrowing down to identify contacts to fill the group. At this point, I received a message that “Members list table is unavailable.”

Am I on the right track, or it there another way to build  a group?

From time to time I have this issue and have tried many things to correct it.  Sometimes they work and sometimes they do not work.  Please try the following:

1.  Go to the "VIEW" menu and zoom in or out.  75% and 100% seem to be the best zoom sizes.
2.  Press alt+space bar and try "Restore" if the window is maximized or try "Max" if the window is not maximized.
3.  Press insert+Escape or try insert+ctl+Escape to reset the JAWS scripts.
4.  If push comes to shove, I kill JAWS and restart it.

Most of the time, one of these methods will correct the problem.

I just tried it after signing up.

I was able to hear the subject field and the message field after hitting the compose button in the messages list with both Jaws 2020 and Jaws 2021 beta.

I’m using the new Chromium Edge.

Maybe try that and see if it works better.

Hello Group,

For a number of years, I have been a member of the Nextdoor.com neighborhood site, specific to my immediate neighborhood and surrounding neighborhoods.

Until recently, I have been able to post messages to the site which I attempted to do e arlier this morning. However, as soon as I opened the message link, and tabbed to the subject field, Jaws stopped speaking. Nonetheless, I tabbed to the message body field and began composing a message. Again, JAWS was silent, so I could not read the content of what I was writing.

I have been using Google Chrome for a couple of months. Could this be a Google issue, or do I need to do a JAWS repair, try a different browser or is Nextdoor no longer accessible as it has been, necessitating bringing this to their attention.

I would guess that some of the US members have and do use this site.

Any help is appreciated.

Peace to all,  Justin

After you give the group a name, try alt+h, then m.

You will be in a search box.

Or, tab to where you can just type in their email address.

It is clunky at best.

Hey guys:

I found a bug in jaws2021,

That, if I hit jaws+f10,

Jaws only lists the running tasks in the same desktop where jaws is loaded;

This came up because I use multiple desktops, and,

Jaws is only loaded in one of them;

Also,

I do not believe that this bug is only for jaws2021,

I believe this has been a phenomenon in even older versions;

It looks to me as if jaws never contemplated people using multiple desktops in windows 10;

Please advise as you like.

They usually come in the box.  It is a plain old a-b cable like we used to use on printers.

is the USB cable standard (and can get one from whom ever sells one) or is it propriatary, therefore I will have to check with APC?

Subject: using Power Chute with JAWS

It wasn't all that accessible, but it can give you some useful info if
you need to know things like when your last ups event was and the like.

I'm wondering if there is a significant benefit in installing and
using the Power Chute Personal Edition program for a user to access an
APC UPS's features? and if so, if it is accessible with JAWS and/or NVDA?

I am inclined to plug in the UPS, computer and peripherals, and let it
do it's job without using the PCPE.

That's entirely possible, particularly if you, at any point in time, checked that checkbox to not show the Delete confirm dialog box again.

This is one reason I encourage people to think long and hard before disabling this sort of thing.  Sometimes, it's just fine, but at others it allows you to accidentally trigger something with a single key press and never know that you've triggered it.
