Well, I’ve solved the problem myself.  When you get into Google Calendar and find it is speaking in a foreign language you hit the Application key and arrow down to where it says Translate into English and hit the Enter key.  Once it gets translated you can go to the Settings page.  I did this, and guess what?  The default language was not English.  It was Slovokian.  There is a place in Settings where you can choose the language you want.  I chose English United States, hit the Enter key, waited for the setting to change and voila!!!  It works!!!

I haven't had a chance to look at google calendar directly, and your message had too much information to really parse what was going on. If I heard it correctly, it sounded like you had two languages going on for the calendar, and that you were getting US holidays. If you use Gmail with the full version (not the html only version), does that at least read correctly for you?

Richard,

I think I borrowed the “compact” terminology from the iphone.  The Nathan I am using is the basic one that comes installed with JAWS Vocalizer.  I tried, but did not like the Nathan Premium, so it’s not that one.   I’m going to be out of pocket for a few day, but can test more with my personal laptop later.

🍷

Hi,

How do you get the compact voices?

I installed Nathan Premium and yes, the emoji panel reads fine but when I selected the above Wine glass and read that line it says “12.”

It will say more after I send this.

When I went to add voices, I did not find an option for compact.  I’d like to compare Apple to Apples, granted, since I am on the beta, it is more like comparing Red delicious with Fuji apples.

Using Outlook 365 and Windows 10. I Just inserted the above to emojis from the Windows emoji panel and Nathan Compact in JAWS 2020 February or March release,  announced them correctly, both on the panel and after inserting.  As I  write this message, the top one says “rolling on the floor laughing” and the second says “two hearts”.  I’m not on JAWS 2021 yet, so I wonder if that is an issue with the new version.

Hi,

I assume that this is not the case with other synthesizers such as Eloquence and Windows OneCore (OneCore voices are best ones to use when dealing with emojis). If I’m correct, it is something to ask Nuance through Vispero.

Thanks Joseph,

Very interesting.

I tried SAPI 5 and Eloquence and they read the emoji just fine.

I went back to my default of Tom enhanced from Vocalizer and it read it when I re-read a sent message.

Then, I just added one here and it just says 12.

Hi,

This is a synthesizer issue, and unless JAWS is told to process certain Unicode symbols directly and send them to synths, it won’t be able to read emojis and some Unicode symbols correctly.

I find I have to use Narrator to arrow through the emoji panel, and after picking one, Narrator reads the emoji just fine.

Jaws 2021 reads a number.

I sent a note to a friend who has a great job at a place where it is not uncommon for the office to go out for a drink at 3 PM to end the day.  So I used the whiskey glass emoji.  Narrator reads it accurately.  Jaws 2021 says “twelve.”

Any thoughts about how Jaws can be made to speak the emoji?

I went to their web site for something, and there is a notice that they are having technical problems.
What was the question about google calendar?

I haven't had a chance to look at google calendar directly, and your message had too much information to really parse what was going on. If I heard it correctly, it sounded like you had two languages going on for the calendar, and that you were getting US holidays. If you use Gmail with the full version (not the html only version), does that at least read correctly for you?

Cheers,

Very interesting.

I tried SAPI 5 and Eloquence and they read the emoji just fine.

I went back to my default of Tom enhanced from Vocalizer and it read it when I re-read a sent message.

Then, I just added one here and it just says 12.

JAWS Tip: Is JAWS Not Speaking As You Move Your Cursor? Try Toggling Enhanced Edit Support
In almost all applications moving the cursor or caret using your arrow keys causes JAWS (or any screen reader) to speak the character, word or line as
you use the appropriate cursor movement commands, such as right arrow for next character, control+right arrow for next word, etc. This works nearly 100%
of the time. However, I recently noticed that JAWS wasn’t speaking as I was moving the cursor in
Jarte,
a Wordpad-like word processor that I often use. This was baffling until I found the fix. (Note: in the interest of full transparency I may have enabled
the setting that I’m about to discuss as a default. Therefore, the problem that I encountered may not actually have been a JAWS issue but may have been
something that I personally enabled.)

If you encounter this problem in Jarte or in any program where cursor navigation isn’t speaking try toggling enhanced edit support. Here’s how you can
locate this feature.

1. Press insert+F2 for the list of JAWS managers and press enter on Settings Center. As a quick shortcut pressing insert+6 will open Settings Center. This
is the 6 on the row of numbers and not on the number pad. If you are asked to create a new configuration press enter to accept.

2. In the search edit field type, enhanced.

3. Navigate with the down arrow key through the list of results and look for “enhanced edit support.” While this should be enabled for Word it should be
disabled for Jarte. Pressing the space key toggles this setting from being not checked (turned off) to being checked (enabled.)

4. Press enter twice, which will close Settings Center and save your changes.

Hi all,
Anyone experience inconsistency when navigating by letters in form field using the left/right arrow?
This happens on my machine but only in Chromium edge. I’m running JAWS 2020.

Thanks for the tip. What does it do and is it wise to apply this into the default config file?

Thank you all for your help. The first time I tried doing it, nothing happened. Then I went back and tried it again. This time it worked.

This list is amazing.

Insert space with grov key didn't work for me for volume setting status.  I

usually go to the system tray by hitting Insert and F11 and then arrowing

down to Speakers and pressing Enter.  This will open the system volume

controls.  You will find the main volume and the JAWS volume here.  They are

sliders that you can adjust with your Up and  Down arrows.  HTH.

Hi Shirley.

Go to the system tray with either JAWS+F11 or WINDOWS+B. In either case, you’re looking for your sound device. It will have a percentage after it, which is its main volume setting. Right click on it. If you used the JAWS method to get there, it’s something you can TAB to to activate it. Once you do that, you’ll be in a menu. If you want to change the volume of all your sounds, choose the sound option. If you just want to change the JAWS volume, activate the Volume mixer.

Hope this helps.

Have a blessed day and don’t work too hard.

Dear group members,
I’m shankar from India.
Recently I got the brand new dell laptop from my office and, after
installing the jaws, when I go to the settings panel and pressing
left/right arrow keys, screen reader is not reading the options.
I tried to reinstall the jaws, but, no luck.
The device running the OS Build 19042.546 and jaws 2020 august updates.
Hope someone will suggest me the fix.
