Re: Using Google Calendar with JAWS
Rayn Darren
Hi Rick,
I use Google Calendar al the time with Jaws, but I’m using Microsoft Edge rather than Chrome. I’ve never encountered the language issue with it. I suggest trying a different browser. Also, the app is quite accessible, I use both concurrently with no issue at all.
If you’d like to troubleshoot one-on-one, feel free to reach out and we can have a chat. Not to worry group, if Rick does choose this option, I’ll write out a “how we fixed it”. 😊

Dear Listers:
Recently I listened to a Freedom Scientific archived webinar from last year that talked about using JAWS with Google Calendar. I have decided I want to try to learn to use Google Calendar but every time I go to calendar.google.com JAWS starts speaking to me in a foreign language. When I called Freedom Scientific Technical Support they told me several other people had had the same problem and said it had something to do with Google settings. I went to my Google account, signed in using Facebook, found Settings, and when I checked to see what language was the default language it showed English United States, which is just the language setting I thought I had. Then after discovering that the default language was the correct one I got out of my Google account and opened up Google Chrome, which is my Internet browser, hit the Alt+L keystroke to open up the addressbar, entered calendar.google.com, and hit the Enter key. When the page loaded, here is what was on it:

I haven't had a chance to look at google calendar directly, and your message had too much information to really parse what was going on. If I heard it correctly, it sounded like you had two languages going on for the calendar, and that you were getting US holidays. If you use Gmail with the full version (not the html only version), does that at least read correctly for you?

Re: Jaws 2021 and emoji panel
Richard Turner <richardturner42@...>
🍷 Hi, How do you get the compact voices? I installed Nathan Premium and yes, the emoji panel reads fine but when I selected the above Wine glass and read that line it says “12.” It will say more after I send this. When I went to add voices, I did not find an option for compact. I’d like to compare Apple to Apples, granted, since I am on the beta, it is more like comparing Red delicious with Fuji apples.

JAWS Tip: Is JAWS Not Speaking As You Move Your Cursor? Try Toggling Enhanced Edit Support In almost all applications moving the cursor or caret using your arrow keys causes JAWS (or any screen reader) to speak the character, word or line as you use the appropriate cursor movement commands, such as right arrow for next character, control+right arrow for next word, etc. This works nearly 100% of the time. However, I recently noticed that JAWS wasn’t speaking as I was moving the cursor in Jarte, a Wordpad-like word processor that I often use. This was baffling until I found the fix. (Note: in the interest of full transparency I may have enabled the setting that I’m about to discuss as a default. Therefore, the problem that I encountered may not actually have been a JAWS issue but may have been something that I personally enabled.) If you encounter this problem in Jarte or in any
program where cursor navigation isn’t speaking try toggling enhanced edit
support. Here’s how you can
locate this feature. 1. Press insert+F2 for the list of JAWS managers
and press enter on Settings Center. As a quick shortcut pressing insert+6 will
open Settings Center. This
is the 6 on the row of numbers and not on the number pad. If you are asked to create a new configuration press enter to accept. 2. In the search edit field type,
enhanced.
3. Navigate with the down arrow key through the
list of results and look for “enhanced edit support.” While this should be
enabled for Word it should be
disabled for Jarte. Pressing the space key toggles this setting from being not checked (turned off) to being checked (enabled.) 4. Press enter twice, which will close Settings
Center and save your changes.

Insert space with grov key didn't work for me for volume setting status. I usually go to the system tray by hitting Insert and F11 and then arrowing down to Speakers and pressing Enter. This will open the system volume controls. You will find the main volume and the JAWS volume here. They are sliders that you can adjust with your Up and Down arrows. HTH.

Hi Shirley.
Go to the system tray with either JAWS+F11 or WINDOWS+B. In either case, you’re looking for your sound device. It will have a percentage after it, which is its main volume setting. Right click on it. If you used the JAWS method to get there, it’s something you can TAB to to activate it. Once you do that, you’ll be in a menu. If you want to change the volume of all your sounds, choose the sound option. If you just want to change the JAWS volume, activate the Volume mixer.
Hope this helps.
Have a blessed day and don’t work too hard.

Hi Shirley,
If you have elaquence voices enabled you cannot adjust the volume through the adjust Voice dialogue. If you are using the Vocal Expressive voices you can go to Voices submenu, adjust voices and then click on the PC Cursor Voice and tab over to the volume setting. I don't know why you cannot adjust the volume of the elequence voice. If you want to adjust that volume you need to go to Go up to the Edit Field that acts like a Search Box and then go to application volume. Laura Shumate I T larelishumate@...

Re: Jaws Only Reads when Using Say Line Keystroke
Mike B.
Hi Cher,
It's very possible that could have been the cause in 1 of the
newer versions of Jaws, but I don't know how I could have turned on Speech on
Demand with all the newer versions. Also, the keystroke, Insert + S,
toggles speech on and off in Jaws 16. So essentially something weird
happened and it did fix itself after a couple of reboots, so I'm just not sure
what happened. I was turning off one version and starting another and this
is why I don't understand how the Speech on Demand feature could have carried
itself from 1 version to the other. Thank you very much for your
input.

Running Windows 7, Word 2010 and Jaws 16, thru J2021. I don't know what happened but, when reading an old or new Word .DOCX file Jaws of any version will not read line by line when down or up arrowing, Jaws will only read when using the say line keystroke, Insert + up arrow. Jaws doesn't report blank lines or anything unless using the say line keystroke.
I know I'm missing something but, for the life of me I don't know what. Call it a senior moment a major brain fart or severe brain cramp, but I'm having all of them! Would someone tell me what setting or settings I should be checking? I'm obviously overlooking something and don't have a clue as to what it is.
