Google Docs

Marquette, Ed <Ed.Marquette@...>

I just caught a podcast by Kevin Chow (not 100% certain of spelling) with an interesting demonstration of Google Docs. He was using NVDA, but mentioned that Google Docs claims JAWS works with the new Google Docs. Apparently, however, one needs to use Google Chrome and perhaps also something called Google Vox (I think).
Clearly, from the demonstration, Google Docs isn't for prime time, but for those who have to use it, it appears to be useable -- to some extent.
Has anyone had success using Google Docs with JAWS 12 or even the dreaded JAWS 13?

Hi
Go in to the jaws settings center, press k to go down to keyboard and
right arrow to open it, arrow down to manage key labels and press
space bar to enter it, once it entered press t to go down to tab or
arrow down to it, it will say Tab speak, you must press space then it
will say tab mute, then just apply and click ok or exit whatever I
can't exactly remember. Just remember now your tab key won't be spoken
throughout your computer in all applications.

jaws certification

Kimsan <kimsansong@...>

Hi,

Has anyone done the jaws certification offered by FS? If so, thoughts? If I
read it right, you can take the test as many times as you would like and
once you pass it, then you pay.

Thanks.

Re: "Unselected" in Word and JAWS

Marquette, Ed <Ed.Marquette@...>

Right, but now I have to remember. Do you think Freedom Scientific deliberately screwed this up, or was it an unintended consequence of some other "fix."
I know JAWS 12 screwed up Excel badly; however, I would cast my vote for JAWS 13 being the all time worst screw up -- at least as far as Word and Outlook are concerned.
I remember JAWS 8 being a real mess too, but my experience doesn't go back any earlier than that.

In JAWS 12, after performing a concluding operation to text marked with F-8
in Word, the "selection" is turned off, and JAWS announces this.
In JAWS 13, this "selected" status is retained, and it causes huge problems,
which is one of 31 reasons why I keep giving up on JAWS 13 and go back to
JAWS 12.
Has anyone else noticed this nasty bug? Also, I may be a couple of releases
behind. Does anyone know if this problem has been fixed in recent releases
of JAWS 13?
I sometimes wonder how Freedom Scientific can break so many things that used
to work well when it adds something new. Guess its all the resources they
devote to Research It.

Re: how to edit in word with Jaws

Marquette, Ed <Ed.Marquette@...>

If you use track changes, the other person can clearly see what you have added (in blue) and what you have deleted (in red). In addition, added text will be, by default, in double underlining and the deleted text will have a strike-through attribute; however, it is clearly readable.
Be sure that your display shows "Final showing mark-up." It should, by default, in Word 2003.
Also, if you have deleted a word and you don't hear JAWS read it when you execute a read line command, read by word. JAWS will say "deleted" before the text that has been deleted; however, it will read the deleted text too. Similarly, JAWS will say "inserted" as your cursor moves into inserted text.
Once you have done this, the other party can simply accept changes to take away the insert/delete markings, and he/she can see what you have changed.
We have to do his when we negotiate contracts. We lawyers exchange drafts where we edit each other's documents and show each other the changes we are making.
Sometimes it is easier to edit in Word in so-called final mode. There, you don't see the changes, but it is easier to read. Then, go back and turn the view to "Final showing mark-up" so the other person can show your changes.
Another way to do essentially the same thing is to make a copy of the document and edit it. Once you have finished, go to tools. Then, go to "Compare and merge documents.
Before you enter the name of the original document, be sure to check "Legal blackline" and probably uncheck "find formatting."
Then, go back in the dialog box and type in the name of the original document.
Word will create a third document called a Legal black line which essentially is a track change document showing all your changes.

If you would like for them to see the changes you have made -- so they can "accept," "reject," or modify without having to take out your colors, just turn on "Track Changes" in Word.
In the JAWS Word verbosity setting (insert plus V), you can set JAWS to identify these changes as "inserted" text or as "deleted" text. Your changes will be in different colors. I believe the default is blue for inserted text and red for deleted text. You can change these in Word.
Hope this helps.

Re: how to edit in word with Jaws

epierce@...

To change font color in Word 2010, press Alt-H then "F" and then "C". You are then in the "Font" dialogue box and have to navigate around via "tab", or using arrow keys.

Should be similar in Word 2007. In Word 2003, which if I remember correctly, has the old menus (not the "Ribbon"), it should be possible to do something very similar, perhaps with slightly different keyboard shortcuts.

On a related topic, Word does have a built-in method of tracking changes, if you want to use it.

The following documentation explains how to use the feature in Word 2007, but it should be similar in Word 2010.

http://office.microsoft.com/en-us/word-help/track-changes-while-you-edit-HA001218690.aspx

Here is a full tutorial:

first of all what version of word are you using? If you know how to select text in the doc. You can then just change the color. Mike

"Unselected" in Word and JAWS

Marquette, Ed <Ed.Marquette@...>

In JAWS 12, after performing a concluding operation to text marked with F-8 in Word, the "selection" is turned off, and JAWS announces this.
In JAWS 13, this "selected" status is retained, and it causes huge problems, which is one of 31 reasons why I keep giving up on JAWS 13 and go back to JAWS 12.
Has anyone else noticed this nasty bug? Also, I may be a couple of releases behind. Does anyone know if this problem has been fixed in recent releases of JAWS 13?
I sometimes wonder how Freedom Scientific can break so many things that used to work well when it adds something new. Guess its all the resources they devote to Research It.

: Dear list,
:
: I write to ask whether people would be prepared to support a petition
: asking for the price of JAWS to be lowered, not for ourselves but for
: blind people in the developing world.
:
: The fact is that there are thousands, probably milions of blind people
: around the world who cannot afford to buy JAWS or any other screen
: reader.
: This is a vicious circle for most, since without the independence that
: computers bring, they will struggle to make money, to get a job, to
: live the kinds of independent lives you take for granted.
:
: I think a petition by JAWS users should carry some weight with the firm.
:
: Let me know if you are interested.

JFW11 and Windows 7?

Dani Pagador

Hi, Everyone.
I'm finally making the transition over from XP to Windows 7, but am using JFW11. Are there any tutorials online to help ease the transition? And is there something I can do to make the Explorer view (where you go to choose the file you want to open from a folder on your drive) look like what it normally does in XP?
Thanks as Always,
Dani
