Question about accessible screen sharing, being able to see what others share
Michael Walker
Hi, is it possible when using zoom or WebEx to set it up to where I can see what people are sharing through screen sharing as a jaws user? Thanks.

Great info and great timing! I was trying to save a protected document and enable editing about an hour ago and Jaws crashed. I've made the changes you recommended. Best Regards, Les

JAWS freezes when I close Word
Sameer
Dear List members,
Whenever I close Word using Alt+F4, JAWS will freeze for about 30 seconds & automatically resume speech afterwards. But all keystrokes typed by me during the 30-second interval (For example, moving to the desktop, launching another program using hotkeys) will be executed even if JAWS is silent. Also, if I close the Word document using CTRL+F4 instead of closing Word entirely, this freezing of JAWS does not happen. The freezing does not happen if I close other Office programs like Excel or Powerpoint. This behaviour has been observed for the past couple of weeks with both JAWS 2019 & JAWS 2020. My OS is Windows 10 version 1909 build 18363.959 & Office version is 2016 subscription version. Kindly suggest me how I can stop the freezing of JAWS whenever I close Word. Thanking all in advance for any & all suggestions. -- Regards Mr. Sameer Latey

Hello. To add to Les’s response, if you have the latest Jaws executable saved in your preferred location, locate the file and run it. Since Jaws is already installed, the repair utility will run.

Hi Kevin, Download the Jaws executable file from the FS web site and run it. You can run the repair from there. Best,

Presuming you mean in New Edge, the Chromium-based one, and you can determine that's what you're using by hitting ALT+F, and if the menu opens you are. If it doesn't, and you hit ALT+X, that's the Old Edge which should be ditched at this point. Changing the Search Engine in Chromium-based Edge Browser
What follows presumes you have Edge open and have focus on that window:
1. Hit ALT,Down Arrow or ALT+F to throw focus to the Edge Menu button and expand the menu itself.
2. Follow that with S for settings. This will open a tab showing the following address: edge://settings/profiles This is the Edge Settings page. One could also just open a tab and paste in the address above, but it's better to know how to get there via the menu button.
3. Tab once to land on the Profiles item in the Settings tree. Down arrow once to get to the Privacy and Services item, then hit Enter to get that pane to load.
4. Hit Tab to throw focus into the pane. Hit CTRL+F to bring up Find, then enter Address as your search term. Hit Enter to run that Find.
5. The Address Bar entry text will be found. Hit escape to close the search, then Hit Tab once to land on the actual button for same and activate it.
6. You're now in the Address bar settings, and there are three controls there, the titles of which are pretty self explanatory. To set your default search engine in the address bar, use the setting for that. To change your default search engine for the browser, go to the last option, Manage search engines, then:
a) Tab once to land in the search box. b) Start typing the name of the search engine you wish to use. If it's one of "the big ones" like Google, Bing, Yahoo, DuckDuckGo, etc., it will very likely be the only search result returned, but sometimes it isn't. c) Hit TAB three times. If your preferred search engine is what you've landed on move to step 7, if it isn't, then down arrow through the results until you land on the search engine you want.
7. Right arrow three times to land on the "More Actions" button for that search engine and activate it.
8. This will bring up a pop-up menu, with "Make default" being the first item. Since that's what you're trying to do, activate that option.
You're done. You can close the seI have 32 bit not 64 on this laptop. Does that make any difference?ttings tab. -- Brian - Windows 10 Pro, 64-Bit, Version 1909, Build 18363 The purpose of education is not to validate ignorance but to overcome it.

edge and default search engine
T. Civitello
Has anyone worked out how to change the search engine in MS Edge? I tried
the below snippet from the Internet but couldn’t locate the links they were
describing. Tom
Changing Edge DSE
Steps
list of 5 items
• 1
Open Microsoft Edge.
• 2
At the top right, click More actions (...) > Settings.
• 3
On the left, click Privacy and Services. If you don’t find this, first
click the Menu (3 horizontal lines) at the top left.
• 4
Scroll to the bottom and click Address bar.
• 5
In the “Search engine used in the address bar” drop-down, select
Google.

And then there is reality. If Freedom Scientific servers do not meet the requirements of gdPR, the California privacy LAWS, Hippa or what ever regulation the company has to comply with, with the risk of fines up to4% of revenue, what would it be cheaper to do. Find a reason to let go of the person demanding this specific accommodation or risk the fine.
I agree if this specific function of jaws is required to complete the day to day operations of the job the company should work with Freedom Scientific, but if you do not work with the employer and understand their point of view, then in the end things will not work out well for everyone.
And I suspect the first question from the employer will be that since picture smart is a relatively new function in jaws, how were you able to get your job done before this feature was added.
Now I do not want to seem argumentative and I am fortunate to work with a US company that has to comply with all the above regulations and I need to take a class once a year for several of the above regulations to ensure I understand the laws. And they are able to provide the needed accommodations. However if that company had to way the risks of their consumers privacy, which law do you think they will follow.
Thanks, Abraham

Would it be possible to have edge as my homepage but get google to do the searching. If so, how would I accomplish that? Also, if not, is there anything else I can use and get rid of bing? Also, do I get rid of internet explorer or just leave it there? I do still use it for some things but find it is less and less responsive and useful with jaws.

Hi,
Are you able to update that computer running Windows 7 to Windows 10?
I don’t think Microsoft Edge will work on Windows 7 but I may be wrong.
You are not taking advantage of all that JAWS 2020 offers in in Windows 10 when you are only running Windows 7.
It may be time to invest in a new Windows 10 Computer.
