hi all, this is michael. I'm cross posting this time. Do any of you know how to configure your computer to turn your external keyboard off while the computer is off?
I'm asking question like this is because Ever Since I got a new computer in January I begin to experience this issue. My Braille display won't turn off on my new computer when I put my computer to sleep while the Braille display is on USB connection. My Braille display turn itself off on my old computer while it's on USB Connection when I put my old machine to sleep. I want to know what settings in the new computer that I need to adjust?
Hope to hear from you.

Did you check the settings on your old computer and then check the settings on the new computer to see whether they match or here's another question, is the operating system the same or different?

Hi, Michael.

Enable / Disable Power Saving on USB Ports

1. Press the Windows key + R to open the Run box. Type devmgmt.msc and press Enter.

2. When the Device Manager window opens, expand the Universal Serial Bus controllers branch, then right-click the USB Root Hub device and select Properties.

3. Click the Power Management tab. If you want USB ports to keep supplying power in sleep mode, just uncheck “Allow the computer to turn off this device to save power“. Or check it to let Windows turn off USB ports to save power.

4. Repeat steps 3 and 4 for all of the USB Root Hubs on the computer.

Hi all,

When words run together using Acrobat Reader, this is a reading order problem and can be fixed most of the time. Hit Control Shift 5, and up or down arrow and hit enter on one of the other options to change the reading order. About 99 percent of the time this will fix the problem.

Here's a quick way to run Jaws 2020 with its default settings. This will determine if it's 1 of your settings that causing this or something else.

Hold down the, Insert key, then press the, spacebar, to activate the layered keystroke feature then press the letter, Z. This will temporarily bypass
your settings and put Jaws into it's factory default settings mode. This keystroke is a toggle so, press the key combination sequence again to go back
to your personal settings.

Temporary bypass using current User Settings and use JAWS factory default = Z.

It doesn’t sound crazy at all. Keyboards can short out very easily and that’s one of the primary symptoms – some of the keys will not work. A good reason not to eat and drink in front of your computer I guess *grins*…

But before we go there – what happens when you press jaws key + minus then? Does jaws announce anything? Or is it silent? DO other jaws key combinations work? What if you turn keyboard help on—can you use the combinationt hen?

Finally, you tried just restarting jaws and/or the computer?

Hi,

Using jaws key numpad minus to route jaws to pc is no longer working.

I’m using the latest version of JAWS, and I’m hoping that this is something I’ve messed up rather than a bug in jaws.

Very grateful for any help with this,

David.

great, could you give us more details about job describtion? also in which country?  do you think that Jaws work well with TP System, might be useful if we know their system / software name if it's accessible.

thanks and good luck

Hello Kevin,

Sorry that I am off topic with this email. Way to go on this new work from home job that you start on Monday! If I can ask, what is the name of this company and where are they located that you have obtained at this work from home customer service representative job that you start training forr on Monday? Any help with this would be so very much appreciated. Much, much thanks in advance for any possible help with this.

Well if that is of concern, I would use my own license and contact either the state agency first, or a private assistance provider, such as Easter Seals.  They can use "ticket to work" and if you aren't interested in giving the job to the state agency, let one of the private agencies use the ticket to work program.

Whoever provides it, other than the employer, gets reimbursed for their work with you.

The company may be able to benefit from tax incentives as well if they provide it.

Also, let’s not push our rights back into the dark ages.  What if you required a refreshable Braille Display.  Would you fork over $5,000 and purchase your own?  We have every right to have the equipment to perform our jobs!  We have fought long and hard for this right, don’t shove it out the door.  If you purchase your own license of JAWS you set a precedent for every single person with a disability that this company hires in the future.

Several people have suggested avoiding paying for a Professional copy of JAWS and use a home use license.  The home use license is for just that, not for work.  Don’t forget that JAWS reaches out to the license server every time it is started.  You don’t know what type of information is being sent to the license server.  By using JAWS home annual license for work purposes is strictly forbidden and you take the chance of losing your license.  You may take your personal laptop to the office and use it for non-work related tasks, but if you are performing a job and using JAWS it really needs to be the Professional license.

Here’s how I would approach my employer.

Tell them you’re thrilled to be working for them and you want to hit the ground running as far as being productive. In order to do this, you need to have JAWS, a “screen reader” (you may have to explain what that means) on the work laptop you’ll be using.

If you are going to use your own personal copy of JAWS, tell them that and say you would like to install your own copy of JAWS on the computer (that means they won’t have to pay for a copy of JAWS). Emphasize that, if u’r eusing your own personal copy, they won’t have to pay anything.  If you want them to buy the program, you’ll need to tell them that and stress that it’s a reasonable accommodation you need in order to do the job. You don’t necessarily need to use ADA specifically.

I urge you to get in touch with them immediately.

Stress the positive nature of you being ready and eager to start  working; all you need is this one small reasonable accommodation, etc etc.

Hope this helps.

I'd ask them to install JAWS, but leave4 the licensing and configuring to you, unless they're providing the license, in which case, let them license it and then hand it over to you for the rest.

Subject: How do I approach an employer regarding installing JAWS on a PC they're giving me for my job?

Hi.

I’ve just been hired as a customer service representative, a work from home job.  For my work, I’ll be using a PC that they’re providing. I’d try to convince them to allow me to use my laptop, but I have to use their headset to do my job, and I suspect it wouldn’t work on my system. I think it uses Windows 10, but I don’t know the version. With all this in mind, I’m hoping to install JAWS on it. I do, however, have some questions to ask.

First, how do I approach them regarding installing JAWS on the PC? I don’t know much about Narrator, and I do know more about JAWS, so that would make me more productive from the start. I would rather not bring up the A.D.A. unless I have to.

My other concern is installing JAWS itself. Since this PC is specifically for work, I suspect they have limited what can be installed on it. What do I need to tell them I need to install it?

I get this PC on Friday, and my training begins on Monday morning.  The good news is I have all weekend to sort this out. The bad news is I think there won’t be people who can help me that work there over the weekend. This is why I’m writing this note tonight. I have all day tomorrow to get advice and ideas.

Thanks in advance.

Hi there, have you sent your jobs back to factory settings, that could also help in some ways. I know that’s a pain in the butt, but however that might only be the only way to restore all your JAWS settings. I hope this helps.
