It is your write (sic) under the AdA.Your right under the ADA is to have a screen reader if that's what you need to do your job. That screen reader need not be JAWS. That being said, many larger companies that already have experience hiring employees who are blind or visually-impaired have volume licensing arrangements in place with Freedom Scientific. So it absolutely makes sense to inquire about having JAWS, Fusion, or ZoomText (though I realize JAWS is what's wanted in this case) if that's what you prefer. But if they say, "No, we expect you to use {insert other screen reader here}," that's perfectly within the bounds of the law. Yes, approach them through a written even letter if you want to make it more formal.
Or, just call them and tell them. It is your write under the AdA.
And besides, if you don't use JAwS, how will you get the job done?

Several people have suggested avoiding paying for a Professional copy of JAWS and use a home use license. The home use license is for just that, not for work. Don’t forget that JAWS reaches out to the license server every time it is started. You don’t know what type of information is being sent to the license server. By using JAWS home annual license for work purposes is strictly forbidden and you take the chance of losing your license. You may take your personal laptop to the office and use it for non-work related tasks, but if you are performing a job and using JAWS it really needs to be the Professional license. Jim Weiss

Re: How do I approach an employer regarding installing JAWS on a PC they're giving me for my job?
JOHN RIEHL
Here’s how I would approach my employer. Tell them you’re thrilled to be working for them and you want to hit the ground running as far as being productive. In order to do this, you need to have JAWS, a “screen reader” (you may have to explain what that means) on the work laptop you’ll be using. If you are going to use your own personal copy of JAWS, tell them that and say you would like to install your own copy of JAWS on the computer (that means they won’t have to pay for a copy of JAWS). Emphasize that, if u’r eusing your own personal copy, they won’t have to pay anything. If you want them to buy the program, you’ll need to tell them that and stress that it’s a reasonable accommodation you need in order to do the job. You don’t necessarily need to use ADA specifically. I urge you to get in touch with them immediately. Stress the positive nature of you being ready and eager to start working; all you need is this one small reasonable accommodation, etc etc. Hope this helps.

I'd ask them to install JAWS, but leave4 the licensing and configuring to you, unless they're providing the license, in which case, let them license it and then hand it over to you for the rest.

This entire discussion continues to convince me, with perhaps some exceptions, that the best way to deal with PDFs, assuming you have Microsoft 365 on your system, is to set them up to open in Word. Word has no problem with paragraphs. The exception that I have found is a student textbook I opened in Word and which contained a myriad graphics which for me were entirely useless. I didn't try it in Adobe reader. But all the other PDFs I've been opening lately have been effortless to read in Word.

While I am able to bring it back where I need to when it jumps, I remain quite worried. That I might miss some vital info or internalize it wrongly if I fail to notice the jump. Does anyone else face this? How do you get around it? Converting every pdf into word is not very viable.. and can muff up footnotes. Copy pasting it into word makes a 10 page pdf a 30 page word doc. And makes quick reading very hard. So what can one do? Rahul

Hi Enrique,

i tried your suggestion. insert+g opens the graphics labeler, but jaws tells me that i am not on a graphic with the jaws cursor. i have routed it to the graphic, i even did a lef click on it just to be sure, but it still says that it is not positioned. the only thing i have discovered, and quite by accident, is that the custom label sticks, even though jaws does not read it. then, if i press insert+ctrl+g, jaws gives me a list of graphics. the graphics i have assigned a custome label to then show their custom labels, but this is a real pain. the graphics hold numbers, which are confirmation numbers for a shutdown. the same graphics appear if you want to dismount a disk. i suppose, that if there is no other way to do this, the custom label option and insert+ctrl+g will have to do. however, if you have another idea, i would be greatful for it. these must be some sort of funny type of graphics. i informed buffalo about it last year, and they said they would do something about it. however, as we all know, big companies dont pay any attention to this, as we are in the minority, and especially when it comes to things like nas devices. cheers anyway, pat

Custom labels are not used for labeling graphics; they're for labeling controls that JAWS reports as "unlabeled" (E.G. buttons). But these are not unlabeled controls; they're graphics.
