Re: Route jaws to PC no longer working

It doesn’t sound crazy at all. Keyboards can short out very easily and that’s one of the primary symptoms – some of the keys will not work. A good reason not to eat and drink in front of your computer I guess *grins*… But before we go there – what happens when you press jaws key + minus then? Does jaws announce anything? Or is it silent? DO other jaws key combinations work? What if you turn keyboard help on—can you use the combinationt hen? Finally, you tried just restarting jaws and/or the computer?

This might sound crazy, but test with another keyboard if you have an extra. I had a keyboard quit working with the Escape and numpad delete key. Different keyboard, back to working.

Hi, Using jaws key numpad minus to route jaws to pc is no longer working. I’m using the latest version of JAWS, and I’m hoping that this is something I’ve messed up rather than a bug in jaws.
Very grateful for any help with this,
David.

Hi,
I notice it works fine when I use shift+dots 4-6 on my focus 80. No, numlock is off and it used to work fine with this keyboard, Route PC to jaws works fine, Thanks,
David.

Well if that is of concern, I would use my own
license and contact either the state agency first, or a private assistance
provider, such as Easter Seals. They can use "ticket to work" and if you
aren't interested in giving the job to the state agency, let one of the private
agencies use the ticket to work program.
Whoever provides it, other than the employer, gets
reimbursed for their work with you.
The company may be able to benefit from tax
incentives as well if they provide it.

It is your write (sic) under the AdA.Your right under the ADA is to have a screen reader if that's what you need to do your job. That screen reader need not be JAWS. That being said, many larger companies that already have experience hiring employees who are blind or visually-impaired have volume licensing arrangements in place with Freedom Scientific. So it absolutely makes sense to inquire about having JAWS, Fusion, or ZoomText (though I realize JAWS is what's wanted in this case) if that's what you prefer. But if they say, "No, we expect you to use {insert other screen reader here}," that's perfectly within the bounds of the law. Yes, approach them through a written even letter if you want to make it more formal.
Or, just call them and tell them. It is your write under the AdA.
And besides, if you don't use JAwS, how will you get the job done?

Also, let’s not push our rights back into the dark ages. What if you required a refreshable Braille Display. Would you fork over $5,000 and purchase your own? We have every right to have the equipment to perform our jobs! We have fought long and hard for this right, don’t shove it out the door. Several people have suggested avoiding paying for a Professional copy of JAWS and use a home use license. The home use license is for just that, not for work. Don’t forget that JAWS reaches out to the license server every time it is started. You don’t know what type of information is being sent to the license server. By using JAWS home annual license for work purposes is strictly forbidden and you take the chance of losing your license. You may take your personal laptop to the office and use it for non-work related tasks, but if you are performing a job and using JAWS it really needs to be the Professional license. Jim Weiss

Re: How do I approach an employer regarding installing JAWS on a PC they're giving me for my job?
JOHN RIEHL
Here’s how I would approach my employer. Tell them you’re thrilled to be working for them and you want to hit the ground running as far as being productive. In order to do this, you need to have JAWS, a “screen reader” (you may have to explain what that means) on the work laptop you’ll be using. If you are going to use your own personal copy of JAWS, tell them that and say you would like to install your own copy of JAWS on the computer (that means they won’t have to pay for a copy of JAWS). Emphasize that, if u’r eusing your own personal copy, they won’t have to pay anything. If you want them to buy the program, you’ll need to tell them that and stress that it’s a reasonable accommodation you need in order to do the job. You don’t necessarily need to use ADA specifically. I urge you to get in touch with them immediately. Stress the positive nature of you being ready and eager to start working; all you need is this one small reasonable accommodation, etc etc. Hope this helps.

I'd ask them to install JAWS, but leave4 the licensing and configuring to you, unless they're providing the license, in which case, let them license it and then hand it over to you for the rest.

Re: Reading pdfs with confidence
Dean Martineau <topdot@...>
This entire discussion continues to convince me, with perhaps some exceptions, that the best way to deal with PDFs, assuming you have Microsoft 365 on your system, is to set them up to open in Word. Word has no problem with paragraphs. The exception that I have found is a student textbook I opened in Word and which contained a myriad graphics which for me were entirely useless. I didn't try it in Adobe reader. But all the other PDFs I've been opening lately have been effortless to read in Word.
