Re: Windows 10 question
Maybe not. Maybe it just need someone to have a quick look at its
Windows Update screen, or the event logger. I can do some of that
for you via a screenreader connection, JAWS Tandem or NVDA Remote,
your choice. I can't guarantee a solution, but another pair of
ears on a problem is never a bad thing.

19-09 update? Don't you mean 20-04?
Try this:
1. Press Windows Key + Shift +I to open the Windows Settings
pane.
2. In the search field, type update and press the Down Arrow
Key until you hear "Windows update," then press ENTER.
You're now in the dialog where you can do things like check
for updates, pause updates for seven days, etc.
If you press the "Check for updates" button and your system
tells you you're up to date, then there's something either on
or in your system that can't be updated to the latest version
of Windows 10, or any later versions than your current version
for that matter.
You also may not be getting updated because during the hours
you've chosen for those updates to be applied, your computer
is off or offline. You can force the update(s) to happen by
tabbing through the updates dialog and finding a list of
available updates chosen for your system, then tabbing to the
download or "install" button immediately after that list.

There's nothing to check. Updates are
no longer an option in Windows 10.
That is, you can't say you don't want
them. The best you can cd is pause

I'm thinking 78.0.2 is crashing less than 78.0.1 but
still definitely not good! I'm using Chrome a lot more
now, or else using Firefox with NVDA. I tried Jaws 2019

It crashed occasionally before

This update is definitely unveiling something nasty.
Mozilla apparently had a twitter back and forth

Hey folks.
Yes, I know JAWS 2018 is behind the curve, now,
and that an upgrade would be beneficial. However,
I’m not in a position to upgrade at this time. At
the risk of running a huge struggle to continue
using outdated software, I would like to know if
anybody has any ideas of configuration settings
that might make Firefox less crashy using this
screen-reader. I know its’ an issue between
interaction with JAWS and firefox and, frankly,
always has been since the advent of Quantum. I
tested this with nVDA (2019.3 and 2020.1) and it’s
a lot less crashy. In fact I have failed to make
Firefox crash even once using this other
screen-reader. I know some users of JAWS 2020 have
reported crashes, too, but I’m unable to test that
currently and at a guess, newer versions of JFW
should probably work better as well as NVDA.
Anyway, since I’m not looking to downgrade firefox
and not quite ready to either upgrade or give up
JFW for the web browsing experience, in part
because it works so nicely with my Focus braille
display, just wondering if there are any
flags/options I can alter in about:preferences or
about:config
(firefox’s “hidden” advanced settings page
containing literally thousands of configurable
options) that might help me have a smoother
experience. Right now, since FF updated to 78.0.1
a week or two ago, everything from wikipedia pages
to my old wisp’s webmail is crashing tabs. This
only happens when jFW is running.
NB: I’m aware
of other browsers and use them, so no need to
suggest just switching browsers. Thanks!!

Hi. I can answer a couple of your questions. First, you get to the participant list by pressing alt-U. You have to tab around until you get to the list of names; then you can arrow up and down. This is somewhat buggy. They claim they're going to fix it so that every time you get into the participant list you'll be put in the list of names by default, but they haven't fixed it yet. To chat with a participant, you have to open the chat panel. You do this by pressing alt-H. That opens the chat panel. You then tab around until you find the names of participants and press enter on the name of the person you want to chat with. By default it's set to send a chat to everyone. Hope this helps. I am taking part in a class at church via Zoom. I know how to join a meeting and how to mute and unmute my microphone, but there are a few things I am having problems with. First, when you join a meeting, how do you get to the Gallery view using JAWS? Also, when I get to the list of participants JAWS won't read the list whenever I arrow up and down. Also, I know there is a spot where it says, "Find a participant." I assume you enter the person's name and then the person's name will show. But if you want to send a message to that participant, how do you do it? Whenever I find the "Find Participant," link and enter the person's name, when I tab again it just gives me the option to either clear the search or cancel. So what does this mean?

And I'll second that advice!! The only reason I would force an update to Version 2004 at this point in time is if I had a machine that somehow never updated beyond 1803. At the moment Versions 1809, 1903, and 1909 remain in support. If you have Version 1809, when it is announced as officially going out of support (its length of support was extended secondary to the global pandemic) I would then manually trigger an update to Version 2004. For all others, either wait until: 1. The version you are on is announced as going out of support and you have not yet had the Version 2004 update apply. 2. Microsoft announces that Version 2004 is officially "good to go for everyone." I suspect it will be some months until this happens. Several of us have given the advice in the numbered list above for each and every feature update, just substituting the appropriate version number in place of 2004. Once the second feature update of 2020 is officially released, the advice will apply to triggering that update as well. The easiest way to think of this is there is absolutely no reason to rush a feature update if there is not a very good reason for doing so, and there is absolutely no reason not to force a feature update if for some reason your machine "became stuck" on a Windows 10 version that is going out of support (which circles back to creating a very good reason for triggering a feature update manually - as something about Windows Update on the machine that hasn't presented a feature update to the user over several feature updates is definitely broken). --

Hi, A few weeks ago I wrote the following to members of a certain Windows 10 list: Do NOT force Version 2004 (May 2020 Update) on your system unless you have clear justifications. If you do check for updates and you get a message that your system isn’t quite ready for Version 2004, take the advice as is. May 2020 Update is still being deployed as Microsoft expands availability based on feedback and telemetry from early adopters. At the moment May 2020 Update is blocked on devices with certain software and hardware configurations. Also, there are reports that if you do upgrade using installation media, some people will get a message that the system being upgraded isn’t compatible with Version 2004. Cheers, Joseph

Re: duck duck go browser
Thanks, Judy. I saw Steve's post before yours and Google Chrome is my default browser. I think Google is currently the search engine, but must double check.

Re: duck duck go browser
Thank you, Steve. I'm running a version of Firefox before 78 and with all the Firefox problems, I think it's best not to add anything to it in case it makes things worse. Chrome is my default browser. Before I try to do the Chrome equivalent of your instructions should I get the DuckDuckGo extension for Chrome? It looked like the extension was at the Google store and not on the DuckDuckGo page when I looked this morning. Is this correct?
Your help is very much appreciated.

The instructions talk about clicking on a magnifying glass in a search bar, but none of that is accessible to us screenreader user types. So instead, do this in Firefox, or the applicable thing in your Web browser of choice: 1. Open Firefox. 2. Open the Tools menu with Alt plus T. 3. In the search field type: search engine and press ENTER. You could type just the word "search," but that yields too many choices. 4. If you like, read the resulting page, or just shortcut the whole process by finding the combo box that shows your current default search engine. 5. To change it, tap the space bar or press ENTER, then use the vertical (Up/Down) arrow keys to select Duck Duck Go, and press ENTER to close the combo box, which will save your change. All done. Dear Listers:

Re: Windows 10 question
From https://insider.windows.com/en-us/articles/were-listening-to-you:As many of you know, the feature updates for Windows 10 occur twice a year. A feature update includes upgrading Windows to the latest version with enhanced features, security improvements, and more. A feature update is different from the quality updates that are release on Patch Tuesday. Quality updates are mostly security fixes and are installed after one reboot, whereas feature updates are installed in steps that require more than one reboot to complete. There are four phases in a feature update installation. Online phases occur while the device is being used and the operating system is running, which means tasks are happening in the background without disrupting you. Offline phases on the other hand can disrupt you, since the device can’t be used. For the Creators Update in April 2017, the average offline time for a user was about 82 minutes.

At this point in time, and with the changes to how Feature Updates are applied, the answer to that is, "Yes."
But, if one wishes to postpone other Windows Updates (and I think that critical updates are never able to be delayed) one can use those settings. The Pause for 7 days is just the default pause. It says right beneath if you wish to have a longer period then use the advanced features to set the time span (up to 35 days).
In advanced settings you also have the option to postpone Feature Updates from even being presented for up to 1 year (365 days) and quality updates from being downloaded and applied for up to a month (30 days).
