Microsoft Edge does not crash but Firefox certainly does and I’m using the latest Firefox, Jaws 2020 and Windows 10 2004.

Yes, here as well.  I think it came with a new version of firefox.  It has something to do with Jaws, I suspect because on one page where I can make it happen, it doesn't crash with nvda.

If anyone wants to have a crash with latest version of firefox go to www.cvstats.net and hit enter on country stats.  Firefox will crash immediately.

HI Justin. It’s free. I haven’t used the video call option because I don’t have a camera. Tried a couple of calls – the audio quality is not great but it’s fine I guess…I think for pleasurable listening you’d be better off using skype or zoom, but a lot of people have the facebook messenger/app on their phones so forwhat’s essentailly free long distance I guess it’s ok. The app’s interface is a little clunky if you just want to send messages to your buddies but it is ok. Personally what I dig about it is that it runs in background and you don’t have to have facebook open in browser to know you’ve received messages.

Yes, that’s what I’m talking about

Go to the messenger website. There is a direct link to the microsft store where the app can be downloaded. You can probably do a search at the store itself too but the last time I tried that, I couldn’t seem to get the right result to come up/activate so I think going through the web is preferrable, but it’s up to you.

Anyway, once you click “get”, the software will install. Once tha’ts done I open windows search and start typing in “messenger”. It will come up and you can work with it from there.

As a developer and one who has supported users, I can understand why the screen shade item has been set to have to be turned on. If it was a permanent setting what would happen is it would end up generating calls. Because people would have their jaws starting up with the screen shade enabled, and then say something happened on start up of jaws. The screen would be blank. And there are a lot of users who would just ask a sighted person can you see what's happening. Well the answer would be nothing because the screen would be blank.

So from a support point of view it is better that it isn't an always on feature.

Have a good day everyone.

the alternative would be is to turn the monitor off, but a laptop doesn't have a power button or a way to turn it off. although I could be wrong, I don't think so.

Note: This feature is only available with Jaws2018 & Newer, running Windows 10. I'm not sure, but possibly Windows 8.1 as well.

Jaws Key + Spacebar followed by F11 or Printscreen both toggle screen curtain on and off.

The layered keystroke feature is when you hold down the Insert key then press down the spacebar, let up on both keys, then press a third key to perform a particular task.

With each press of this keystroke sequence you will hear Jaws report either, Screen shade on or, Screenn shade off.

Since the Jaws screen shade feature isn't available in the Settings Center, and can be only accessed by the 2 ways mentioned above, here's the way to check its current setting through Jaws quick settings:

BTW, whether you're in Explorer or a program, the screen shade setting is found in the General Options category of Jaws quick settings. So, when, in or on, most places of your computer press, Insert + V, to open Jaws quick settings.
Down arrow until you hear Jaws report, General Options, and if Jaws reports that it's closed right arrow to open.
Now continue down arrowing until you hear Jaws report, Screen Shade, either checked or unchecked. Pressing the spacebar will toggle this setting on & off, checked being, On, and unchecked being, Off.

To my knowledge, ALT+D works in all modern web browsers to throw focus to the address bar and cause the address to be selected when focus lands there.

I've just tested that in Firefox, Edge, Chrome, and Brave and it works in all of them.  If anyone knows of an exception, that would be interesting to know.  And this is not a screen reader command, but a part of Windows or the browsers' interfaces, I'm not absolutely sure which.

I prefer an e-mail because I’m out of the US.

Hello Brian,

tried the approach via the favorites manager - still quite cumbersome.

It seems to me that longterm maintaining the IE favorites file on the desktop is much more efficient:

I will still save the favorite in the Edge Browser with Control + d

Additionally however - and this is certainly more work

1. Go with control + l and copy the web address of the page in Edce

2. Open the IE favorites on the desktop

3. create new shortcut with the application menue.

After this I have the convienience of handling all subsequent accesses with keyboard searches etc from the desktop file.

It's very, very much like file explorer in layout, and if you know what you're looking for a couple of characters in the search box tends to really cut down on what's available in the actual favorites list in the right pane.

But I don’t know how to download it.  I  have gotten to the Messenger site but see no link for the Microsoft store.  When I finally found it doing a Google search I found the app and hit the enter key on the “get,” button, but nothing happened.

Yes. The message you were replying to there specifically mentions windows and the Microsoft Store.

Will this app work even with a PC?  I do not have a phone.  I have a Dell PC and I use Windows 10.

It will come up and you can work with it from there.

hi can you get the messenger app for your PC?

So that you don't have to go to the messenger web site to use it.

And if so where do you go to get it and what is the best way to install it?

It has buttons to audio or video call people on your list. Not sure if there’s a way to do this from within browser or not…

Anyone:

I looked up the instructions about how to video chat with a friend on Facebook.  The first thing it says is “Click in the upper right of the screen.”  Is there any way using JAWS that you can video chat with someone?

Sorry, don’t know what else to suggest as it sounds like you did everything you needed to do. You’re sure the programme did not install, I suppose?
