getting jaws to say unread
Marvin Kotler
Good afternoon listers; first, using jaws 2020 and windows 10 1909 and windows 10 mail. When I arrow down my message list, jaws says the date instead of unread. I do not use e mail much, so, if anyone could tell me how to get jaws to say unread, I would appreciate it. Marv

If you're using Edge as your default browser, then the easiest way (at least to me) is to copy the URL for which you want a desktop shortcut out of the address bar, then use the New,Shortcut option from the Desktop context menu to create one. You also have the option of using Google Chrome for desktop shortcut creation (which will still open in whatever you have set as your default browser) by opening the URL under Chrome or Brave, then using its More Tools, Create Shortcut option to place the shortcut on your desktop. -- Brian - Windows 10 Pro, 64-Bit, Version 1909, Build 18363 The purpose of education is not to validate ignorance but to overcome it.

That generally avoids both carrying existing formatting with, or generating automatic word formatting for, the text being pasted. You can also set "Text Only" as your default paste option if that's what you're generally looking to do. The default is "Keep Source Formatting." You could have saved as plain text out of Openbook; or as was suggested, copy and paste into NotePad and then copy and paste that into Word, and no tables.

When I wrote Vispero about this, the recommendation was to paste the information into notepad, which removes all the formatting. To remove table formatting in Word, while in the table press alt+j, then l, then v. In either event, the formatting of the original document is lost.

Yes, use the Convert Table to Text function in Word. You can find it with Alt+Q, add it to the Quick Access Tool Bar, or add a keyboard shortcut for the function, whichever you prefer. Alt+q is the easiest approach.

Hello,
I’m using most recent version of windows10 (2004), most recent version of Jaws2020 and MS word 2016.
I scaned a document using Jaws OCR. In the results document the text shows up not in tables. I copied the text and pasted it into a MS word document. The text is then put into tables.
Would it be possible to remove the tables and the text remain?
Thanks,
Kevin

Jaws and the FS focus uses dot8 plus spacebar with dot 1 through to dot 6. For example: dot 8 and dot 4 is the window key. Dot 8, dot 6 is the alt key. They are also called layer keys meaning you have to issue dot 8, dot 6 with spacebar, then a alpha key like f to activate alt f. I have not done deep dive to see how this is actually done with the FS focus. The reason for sharing the above is it should be possible with any braille display without script work. First I would suggest you read the FS documentation on the FS braille display to understand the commands. Then try them out with the keyboard help. This will give you the script name. Then you can look this up in the keyboard manager. Otherwise you will have to create a script in the default.jss file. When you issue a keyboard command, you are sending the relevant command you want. There is a function for sending keys to the OS. This is just a quick note to let you know the two possibilities. If I had more time, I would dig deeper for you. The worse case situation the above commands are drive based which I would find very surprising. Sean

I just learned that Orbit has not even developed these commands for Jaws and there display, though they did put the commands in the User guide. They've promised an updated user guide, but no word whether they will implement the F1 through F12 key commands yet. In fact, there are a lot of keys on the Orbit that don't seem to be mapped to any functions in Remote mode at all. Thanks for any advice, ~Ann

Re: JAWS Reading Completed Tasks in Microsoft Outlook
Van Lant, Robin
Hello, I assume there is an icon, much like the read and unread flag for messages, but JAWS isn’t reading it. I just created a test task and marred it complete, but JAWS doesn’t distinguish that when arrowing up and down in the inbox. I Have a number of taskss in my list that are overdue and JAWS will announce those as having a “red flag”, so this might e an oversight in the JAWS or Microsoft coding. You might call Microsoft Accessibility to check. I’m in Outlook 2016. Having said this, I prefer to delete tasks once complete rather than marking them complete, because I don’t want them cluttering up my list. Do note that you can delete a task you created as a task, but if you have an item in that list that is actually a follow-up flag on an email or calendar entry, you will want to select the “remove” option, not the “deleted” option. This takes it out of your task list, but leaves the original email or calendar entry in it’s folder. My method for this is to hit the application key when focus is on the item I want in the task list.

I have encountered the same problem. I have my mouse pad turned off by pressing function key and F7. Jumping up to the top of the screen still happens. Freedom Scientific says it is a problem with the web site. A friend with site doesn’t encounter the problem on my laptop with Jaws turned off. Thus telling me it is a Jaws issue.

Sharon, I’ve experienced this a little, too. In my case, my hypothesis is that I have been accidentally hitting the mouse touchpad with the sides of my thumb or hand as I type or rest my hands. I taped an index card over the touch pad and this has really cut down on my issues. If you are using a laptop with a touchpad below the spacebar, you might cover it or disable it to see if this is part of your issue. I don’t turn mine off because my sighted kids also use my laptop.

Once the Windows 10 installer fires up you can turn on Narrator and go the rest of the way straight from the install media. I've supplied these instructions many times, Doing a Completely Clean (Re)install of Windows 10 Using Media Creation Tool to Create Bootable Win10 Install Media on a USB Thumb Drive , and the Windows 10 installer will either install over the current disk setup or you can escape to command prompt and nuke the drive yourself, because Narrator should be up by then if you invoke it. If the reinstall is for yourself, the whole set of steps escaping to Command Prompt are very often unnecessary. -- Brian - Windows 10 Pro, 64-Bit, Version 1909, Build 18363 The purpose of education is not to validate ignorance but to overcome it.

Re: Question regarding the Reset This PC Function
Hi, In order to use online method, you must install May 2020 Update (Version 2004). Apart from downloading the installer image for the Windows 10 version you have, it is identical to local install option. This means this option won’t solve the intended use case – you cannot really repartition the drive or do a complete clean install via external media; to do that, you still need to boot to the installation media. Cheers, Joseph

I would have to use the remote option because this computer came with Windows 7 as the pre-Installed operating system.
when I used the Reset This PC function, I did not get any choices at all
The problem is, the computer I am trying to reset does not boot either from the CD/DVD or USB, so, I need someone with sight to go into the BIOS and change the boot sequence, then, I can use boot media to run a Talking windows Pre-windows Environment to clear the current partition and then install a new installation of Windows 10.
