I’d like pointers for using the Google Calendar with JAWS 2020. Google recommends procedures and hotkeys with virtual cursor off, but you still need to turn it on to read details. If anybody uses this extensively, I’d love suggestions. I can’t, for instance, figure out how to create an event while in month view and have the correct event date filled in automatically.

Thanks.

moderated Re: how do you group messages by conversation in outlook 2019?

This has not changed, to my knowledge, over a very great many versions of Outlook.  I think it's been this way since Office 2007.

ALT+V, AB,D   [View Tab/Ribbon, Arrange By option, Date (conversations)]

If that alone doesn't do it, then you need to make sure that both the Show in Groups option is on (and it's a toggle) if you want the groups to show (e.g., Today, Yesterday, etc., before the conversations themselves):
ALT+V,AB,W

and/or Group by Conversations is on (and that's the default state).  ALT+V,AB,V  (the V is View Settings, which will bring up that dialog) then, in the dialog navigate to the Group by button and make sure it's set for Conversation (ascending), and then navigate to the Sort by button, and set that to Date, with the descending option checked if you want conversations with the newest messages to appear at the top of your inbox, or ascending if you want oldest conversations first with newest at the bottom of the inbox.

Do you mean a shortcut to the Favorites file?  If so, then no, the equivalent does not exist for modern browsers.

If you mean shortcuts that allow you to activate them and open certain websites that are your favorites, then yes, that can still be done.  If you're using Edge as your default browser, then the easiest way (at least to me) is to copy the URL for which you want a desktop shortcut out of the address bar, then use the New,Shortcut option from the Desktop context menu to create one.  You also have the option of using Google Chrome for desktop shortcut creation (which will still open in whatever you have set as your default browser) by opening the URL under Chrome or Brave, then using its More Tools, Create Shortcut option to place the shortcut on your desktop.

When you paste the text, are you using the "Text Only" option?   That generally avoids both carrying existing formatting with, or generating automatic word formatting for, the text being pasted.

You can also set "Text Only" as your default paste option if that's what you're generally looking to do.  The default is "Keep Source Formatting."  I changed my default to match the destination formatting quite a while back, as that's generally what I'm looking to do.

You could have saved as plain text out of Openbook; or as was suggested, copy and paste into NotePad and then copy and paste that into Word, and no tables.

Yes, use the Convert Table to Text function in Word. You can find it with Alt+Q, add it to the Quick Access Tool Bar, or add a keyboard shortcut for the function, whichever you prefer. Alt+q is the easiest approach.

Anne,

Jaws and the FS focus uses dot8 plus spacebar with dot 1 through to dot 6. For example: dot 8 and dot 4 is the window key. Dot 8, dot 6 is the alt key. They are also called layer keys meaning you have to issue dot 8, dot 6 with spacebar, then a alpha key like f to activate alt f. I have not done deep dive to see how this is actually done with the FS focus.

The reason for sharing the above is it should be possible with any braille display without script work. First I would suggest you read the FS documentation on the FS braille display to understand the commands. Then try them out with the keyboard help. This will give you the script name. Then you can look this up in the keyboard manager.

Otherwise you will have to create a script in the default.jss file. When you issue a keyboard command, you are sending the relevant command you want. There is a function for sending keys to the OS.

This is just a quick note to let you know the two possibilities. If I had more time, I would dig deeper for you.

The worse case situation the above commands are drive based which I would find very surprising.

Hi folks,

Would it involve fancy scripting or is there anyway of mapping keys on a braille display to certain functions, like the F1 through F12 keys, setting keystrokes for an Alt_F4 function, ETC? I just learned that Orbit has not even developed these commands for Jaws and there display, though they did put the commands in the User guide. They've promised an updated user guide, but no word whether they will implement the F1 through F12 key commands yet. In fact, there are a lot of keys on the Orbit that don't seem to be mapped to any functions in Remote mode at all.

Thanks for any advice,

Hello,

I assume there is an icon, much like the read and unread flag for messages, but JAWS isn’t reading it. I just created a test task and marred it complete, but JAWS doesn’t distinguish that when arrowing up and down in the inbox. I Have a number of taskss in my list that are overdue and JAWS will announce those as having a “red flag”, so this might e an oversight in the JAWS or Microsoft coding.  You might call Microsoft Accessibility to check.  I’m in Outlook 2016.  Having said this, I prefer to delete tasks once complete rather than marking them complete, because I don’t want them cluttering up my list.  Do note that you can delete a task you created as a task, but if you have an item in that list that is actually a follow-up flag on an email or calendar entry, you will want to select the “remove” option, not the “deleted” option.  This takes it out of your task list, but leaves the original email or calendar entry in it’s folder.  My method for this is to hit the application key when focus is on the item I want in the task list.

I have encountered the same problem. I have my mouse pad turned off by pressing function key and F7. Jumping up to the top of the screen still happens. Freedom Scientific says it is a problem with the web site. A friend with site doesn’t encounter the problem on my laptop with Jaws turned off. Thus telling me it is a Jaws issue.

Sharon,

I’ve experienced this a little, too.  In my case, my hypothesis is that I have been accidentally hitting the mouse touchpad with the sides of my thumb or hand as I type or rest my hands.  I taped an index card over the touch pad and this has really cut down on my issues.  If you are using a laptop with a touchpad below the spacebar, you might cover it or disable it to see if this is part of your issue.  I don’t turn mine off because my sighted kids also   use my laptop.
