If it is political correctness to explain why a business might be closed, that’s just too bad.

If it is political correctness to recognize the end of slavery, that’s too bad.

And, since in reality, it wasn’t the end of slavery, it was just acknowledging that it took two years for people in Texas and other states to find out that in fact they were free, that is not political correctness, that is simply a historical fact.

And if States and/or businesses want to recognize it as a holiday, why would that bother anyone?

And, since this is a forum for discussing Jaws and not politics, why Glen, are you making it about politics?

I won’t pretend to understand how Flag day has anything to do with anything.

Hi, Alan. June Teenth is probably the holiday which has closed Vispero. It's not a federal holiday, though, as the post office is open, and they're delivering mail today. Vispero probably just chose to close today. A lot of businesses want to jump on the band wagon and be politically correct, so they're choosing to honor the "holiday" to look like they're "woke".

Hi List,

I'm looking for the best email address to contact Freedom Scientific to inquire about my Fusion SMA status. I tried the website for checking my SMA at https://support.freedomscientific.com/Products/UpgradeAndSMARenewal which was posted here but after submitting my serial number I received the below message:

Our records show that you are licensed for release 2022 of Fusion Single User for use outside of the United States. Currently direct, online purchase of SMAs is limited to US customers only. Please contact your authorized Freedom Scientific dealer for further assistance. Use our dealer locator tool for assistance finding your authorized dealer.

I'm wanting to follow up with someone at Freedom Scientific since I've only ever resided in the United States and am a bit perplexed how my SMA shows I'm licensed to use Fusion outside the US. I tried calling their 800-444-4443 number but after holding quite a while for the operator and receiving a message that today was a holiday and the office was closed after trying another menu branch, I'm not optimistic I'll speak to a live person. Just out of curiosity, what holiday is today? I know it is June Teenth but I didn't think businesses were closed for it.

If anyone has a suggested email address for writing about my issue, I'd very much appreciate it. This isn't high priority but I would like to have it addressed.

Hi, Blenn. In case your post isn't tongue-in-cheek, Here is a synopsis of the importance of today, Friday, June 19.

Friday marks the 155th anniversary of Juneteenth, a holiday commemorating the abolishment of slavery that takes place every year on June 19.

The date refers not to the end of legal slavery in the United States but to the gap in time before everyone heard the news.

I'd say the response Richard Turner received from Eric Damery, and posted, pretty much confirms this beyond any reasonable doubt.  It also is completely in line with the educated speculation that preceded it by multiple group members, including yourself.

Though this is complex, it isn't rocket science, either.  These things have happened, and will continue to happen, when international commerce is involved.

Hi,

To add to this, and to clarify my previous post, I wasn’t in any way shape or form implying that we should have this available to us outside of the US. That is simply a sad reality and shouldn’t be expected from a company who has third party distributors all over the globe for their products. That would be very difficult to coordinate.

Remember that vispero is located in the US, and it isn’t as though this was a long term project. They’re doing what they can with the time and resources available to them. I do however hope one day that $99 annual Jaws deal comes to other locations.

So… when Apple really started taking accessibility serious and made things like the iPhone and Mac OS more accessible for us, I remember there being a story going around that it had to do with a high level executive having a visually impaired child/relative or something along those lines. The more likely and less warm and fuzzy answer is that they probably wanted some of those sweet government procurement contracts and in order to do so, they could no longer ignore the needs of the disabled.

Does it really matter whether Vispero did it out of the kindness of their corporate hearts or because it was a good PR thing. None of us obviously knows their books, but initially foregoing a three month revenue stream and now extending it can’t be a good thing for their balance sheet. One of my vendors for my interpreting business is the state of California. All in person interpretation appointments for them has stopped since April first due to CoVid. I’ve got other vendors I work with so I’m thankfully fine, but it hasn’t exactly been fun losing that chunk of change either.

I mean really, just take the win.

I didn't know that 20H2 was the "ship with" point, but given the hoopla Microsoft has made about original Edge being replaced with Chromium-based Edge, including stating that original Edge would no longer be available to the end user, it seems to me a given that ultimately there will be only new Edge.

They've been clear that original Edge is "dead browser browsing" for quite a while now.

We have not yet completed the solution of selling the portal option outside the US with distributors yet. But we have worked with all our distributors who have access to 90 Day license which they are sharing on request for those who need assistance. Consumers who are at home and need software during this time should reach out to their distributor directly.

Cristóbal,

No question, Vispero has done a good deed by making its software available for free to Americans and extending a 20% discount for subsequent purchases during this phase of the pandemic. But it makes sense for people who feel excluded from the offer to resent it.

Since this issue has aroused interest on this list and I've been urged to support my previous post, here goes.

As Brian wrote so emphatically, Vispero/freedom Scientific is not a charity. It follows that they didn't give away temporary free use of their software for purely altruistic reasons. Presumably, they hope to attract new customers, and they hope to retain those customers by offering a 20% discount once the "free" offer expires. But it's this relationship between a seller and its customers that makes demands by excluded customers completely reasonable even—actually, above all—in what Brian insists is a capitalist model. Customers have every right to ask to be included. I'm not sure why anyone would lash out at them.

The word "capitalism" comes from "capital." As Adam Smith, considered the father of capitalism explained, family businesses had been unable to grow from generation to generation. It was only when they gained access to third-party financing that they could expand, hire people outside the family and thus improve quality of life for society in general. At least, that was the theory, and it makes sense so long as government provided a safety net for those unable to participate fully in the capitalist model. Smith understood and advocated this role of government. It's the part of his capitalist model that notoriously got overlooked for a very long time.

Vispero and similar accessibility businesses would not exist were it not for the Americans with Disabilities Act. Through the ADA, Congress put the law and governmental resources behind the movement to enable disabled people to participate fully in society. To this end, government combined with businesses to advance a social objective along Smith's capitalist lines.

Nations around the world have adopted laws similar to our ADA. Since Vispero says it operates in ninety countries, we would expect its policies to be consistent, the way they are here in the U.S. While Vispero is not a charity, it is participating in a broad social movement backed by the law and government policy.

But even if you don't accept a reciprocal relationship between a business's mission and social policies, I go back to my original point. What is wrong with a Vispero customer in New Zealand, Canada or elsewhere speaking up for treatment similar to what Vispero provides Americans? Like any business, Vispero ultimately depends on the goodwill of its customers. Think of all the companies around the world currently issuing statements in support of Black Lives Matter and, to take a specific instance, Quaker Foods elimination of the Aunt Jemimah brand because of its racist connotations. You don't have to agree with these actions to see how social movements affect customer relations.

I didn't understand the harsh rejection of posts from non-Americans urging similar treatment by Vispero in their countries. Their posts made perfect sense from both business and philosophical points of view. That's why I felt compelled to post.

Seriously… No good deed goes unpunished.

Vispero didn’t have to do the initial offer to begin with  or even extend  it to anyone at all.

Then, Mr.Spratt, take the time to elaborate that "more sophisticated understanding."

Remove it from Firefox Add-Ons manager, Extensions section.

A current regular update is already doing so:  2020-05 Microsoft Edge Update for Windows 10 Version 1909 for x64-based Systems (KB4559309)

I understand that the tentative end of that rollout to all of the Windows 10 user base is the end of July.

I had installed the chromium version before updating to Windows 10, 2004, so I cannot say if 2004 includes the chromium version: check your version number; this is what I have:
Microsoft Edge Version 83.0.478.50
I use it now pretty much all the time.
Now with Windows 10 2004, Firefox is behaving itself again so I also use Firefox if Edge isn't doing it for me.

Hello,

Yesterday I have upgraded the windows 2004 and the latest version of Jaws.

I have used Internet explorerup to now.

It was mentioned previously that the "Edge Browser" with the 2004 update may have the merger with chromium?

What is the trend to go regarding browser with Jaws?

Hi, Morey. After starting Chrome, press the F11 key to make sure you're not in full screen mode. If you are, ALT plus F won't work, because in full screen mode, the menus are hidden.
