Format, font, etc. of list messages
Norma A. Boge
I can appreciate using a plain font for our messages for those who have some vision. However, I thought it was a no-no on a list which is comprised primarily of screen reader users to not top post messages. I think it is just courteous to have list messages be the easiest to read for all of us. And, no, I’m not a moderator. Just expressing an opinion.

Alan, I believe you and appreciate the correction, but I do know sighted people who have had to print out and then write in themselves and information. I guess it depends upon the kind of pdf or how it’s set up. I personally can’t do anything with them as far as filling them in. Judy & Libby

New Book on Using Zoom with Screen Readers and the iPhone
David Kingsbury
Hi all,
A colleague of mine at the Carroll Center for the Blind has just written a book on using Zoom with screen readers and VoiceOver on the iPhone. It is the first text-based book written on the topic, and I think it is well-written and quite comprehensive. You can order it for $18 at: https://carroll.org/product/getting-started-with-zoom-meetings/

Hi Dave and all listers,
I recently purchased TeraByte Drive Image Backup and Restore Suite To be used on my Windows 10 PC. I have yet to create an image of my hard drive. I would very much appreciate a copy of your audio tutorial once it is ready for public release. And if it is not asking too much, it would be great if the tutorial can also cover how to create the image. Thank you.

Do you do this by building a TBI Recovery disk, or do you have an alternate method? I'd be interested to know what that alternate method is, if you use one.

Chrome & PDFs - something changed for me
Van Lant, Robin
All, On my company provided laptop, I’m using Google Chrome Version 81.0.4044.92 on Windows 10. It used to be that opening a PDF file in Chrome, whether from a link on a website or in an email that links to a PDF on a website, Google would open it and the first thing I would hear was a set of options that included rotate clockwise, download and such. Tabbing past those would put me in the document and I could read the PDF. Suddenly, this has changed. Now, when I open a pDF, it will not read and it reminds me of the old IE 11 experience. I can navigate to the address bar and Chrome menu, but I cannot find a way to enable the view I used to get. Thankfully, I have found that pressing Control S will allow me to save the PDF to my laptop and then open it in Adobe, but this adds extra steps for items I may not want to save in the end. I don’t know if this is coincidental, but I now see that my Chrome is “managed by my organization”, which means my company can change my settings. I wonder if they changed something not knowing the access impact it would have.
Any won have experience with turning on or off settings that would allow you to access a PDF from within Chrome? I don’t see anything in the settings that looks right. Thought I’d check here before I tried contacting Google via Be My Eyes to ask.

Which of the two you have is a design choice by the creator. I also never recommend trying to convert a fillable PDF to MS-Word format, at least if you haven't already filled it out. The conversion issues I've witnessed over the years (including this afternoon, but for a non-fillable PDF converted to MS-Word format) are myriad. -- Brian - Windows 10 Pro, 64-Bit, Version 1909, Build 18363 The purpose of education is not to validate ignorance but to overcome it.

Jenni:
I’m sure there are going to be varying answers here, but here’s mine for starters.
I most often read PDF files with Adobe Acrobat DC.
In addition, I have had some success converting PDF files into Microsoft Word documents with Microsoft Word under Office 365. The process gives me an editable Word document. Of course, the conversion process sometimes messes with the formatting of the original document, so it is not perfect.
I’ll read further responses to this question with interest.
