Re: the latest update to jaws 2020 giving me a fit

Now there is a common Tech response to blame the hardware no matter how new or pristine condition it is in. The software here, JAWS, is not keeping up with the software it is to be working with, be it MS OS to apps as Office or others as Netflicks etc. How can a Company continue to charge for annual upgrades if they do not offer a completely functional product? This is a Jaws issue and you cannot blame any other for no, what is wrong with the product may not effect all the same but the said product/software should have most if not nearly all bugs killed before put on the so-called shelf to be sold.

Well myself I’ve not had any problems yet. Of course I’m running the latest version of office and JAWS. I muse as well if this is not the proverbial trying to put a square peg in a round whole? Or the backyard computer repairman who have the idea of “If it doesn’t fit, bang it hard and it will.”

I, for example, had one computer where for over a year I could not use any of the Windows apps like Calculator and in addition to that Jaws would read absolutely nothing in the start menu or the Settings app. I could open Settings and when somebody checked I was told visually everything was fine, I could right arrow and down arrow and focus would move, I could press enter and whatever category I was on opened up and so on, but Jaws was absolutely silent. This was even before Jaws 2020 came out and it was like this with Jaws 2018 and Jaws 2019 and nothing I did including completely uninstalling both versions, deleting all Jaws folders and reinstalling would fix it. At the same time I had another almost identical computer at my business with very similar hardware and all worked fine. Finally I read a post somewhere where another user had the same problem and somehow they either found out or were told to check if a particular item in the group policy editor in Windows 10 Pro was enabled. I checked the same setting and it was disabled on this particular computer, I have no idea why or how, but it was and as soon as I enabled it all worked perfectly. Narrator, by the way, worked just fine in the Settings app, start menu and calculator, it was just Jaws which had the problem and the problem which fixed the issue had nothing to do with Jaws, but was simply a Windows setting. I mentioned this because it shows how sometimes a problem with Jaws can be extremely specific to one system and be caused by something which is directly not even related to Jaws. I am convinced that if I had wiped the system and reinstalled Windows this would have also fixed the problem, but this happened to be on the PC we use as the main register at my retail store and there is other software on this system which is not quite so easy to reinstall so for the longest time I just put up with it and used Narrator if I wanted to do something in the Settings, I hardly ever use the start menu anyways and when I needed to calculate something I'd just open up Excel instead of using the Calculator. This way I could work around the problem, but it was sure nice when it turned out to be such a simple fix which took me all of 30 seconds to make. JAWS 2020 Latest Update and Remote Support UI
Cornelius
Hi all,
Regarding the latest update to JAWS2020, I found out there is an extra tasks called RemoteSupportUI running on task manager. There is no option to set it to not run, and running extra tasks like that for someone who does not, and will not use remote support on a JAWS Home licence is a waste of resources, not to mention that JAWS has already have so many tasks needed to run. I am still hopeful that one day there will be a way to trim the features of JAWS during installationand remove those extras that not everyone need.

Re: Accessible System Backup Image software, (WAS) the latest update to jaws 2020 giving me a fit
David Griffith
I hesitate to enter the discussion again in case I provoke Brian into one of his threatened screams which seems a strangely emotional response. Specifically in relation to the points made the clone of your OS can be surprisingly small, in the Snapshot case between 20-30GB in my case – although I have all my data on separate drives from my SSD. By the way the claim that you would only want an image restore in the case of catastrophic failure is I think a strange claim. I don’t know why developers would include the feature if this was true. I have several times re-imaged Windows from within a bootable Windows for many different reasons.
However if there is truly a solution which provides support for catastrophic failure as helpfully suggested earlier I like others would be keen to investigate this as it could be a money saver avoiding the need to employ sighted help.

How much space do you need to store the full system backup? I know this depends on what you have on your disk but just for example, say you are using just under 500GB.

From: David Griffith Sent: Sunday, May 3, 2020 9:57 AM Subject: Re: Accessible System Backup Image software, (WAS) the latest update to jaws 2020 giving me a fit
I use a solution which is I suppose is 3/4 accessible. Snapshot will allow a fully accessible disc image backup. Provided you can get into Windows at all the restore of the image is also a fully accessible. You simply select the image you want to restore to and Snapshot will simply restart your computer and about 20 minutes later you will hear your screen reader announce your Windows login for the restored image. I have done this several times with success without sighted help. Where it falls down is if your system is in such a state it cannot boot into Windows. The developers provide an ISO file to create a bootable CD drive but of course there is no speech here on that disc. They did tell me what I needed to type once the CD loaded to restore windows but in practice in these situations I have always resorted to sighted help and a fresh windows install. David Griffith

That is why I like my solution, Win PE and
7Zip.
You can zip it up to any drive, even a thumb drive
as a single ZIP file, and unzip it with Win PE onto a new drive if you want, or
over the top of your old system if it has damaged files.
No ffuss, no muss.
Like I mentioned before, this system I'm using now
was unzipped onto a new drive and booted up with no problems.

I hope that my previous post was not taken to imply that it is (though I saw one after mine that did incorrectly lump Firefox in with other Chromium-based browsers). However, I have never gotten the complaint about menu buttons versus menus. Unless you know exactly where something is in a given menu-driven system you have to go from menu to menu and traverse them until you find it. If it's something you use with any frequency, you then make a note of the keyboard shortcut sequence that gets you straight to it. This is not much different at all than dealing with a menu button where the main menu is a single integrated item. You still have to learn what is where, and make note of how to get there efficiently. For those considering using a cloned drive as a backup solution (and there's nothing wrong with that provided you re-clone when there have been either changes to your system you wouldn't want to have to make again or a significant influx of new user data you would not want to (or, in the case of photos and some audio, be able to) reproduce) make sure that you have a drive that is plug-and-play as a replacement for the main system drive of the system being cloned.

Hello Pat,
I don't wan to minimize the issues you had, but Jaws 2020 has been out for over 6 months and while there will always be certain configurations and systems with various issues, these may not always be 100% the fault of Jaws.
Best regards, Sieghard

Hi,
Not surprised you are having trouble. I myself, only recently, had trouble with installing jaws 2020. I had an authorization problem with windows 10. Like you, i had to uninstall everything and reinstall everything. Perhaps freedom scientific should look at this version of jaws again, and take the bugs out of it. God knows what else is wrong that hasn't been discovered yet. I have tried to update to the latest jaws 2020 on a windows 7 32bit system and when I do my system starts rebooting over and over. I get the error that the gdihooks.dll is missing from my computer and to reinstall the software. I finally got it to work removing all the jaws installations and only installing a 2003 build of 2020. Now, on my laptop running windows 10 had no problems with the 2004.66 update of jaws 2020. go figure!

That's your MaxAudio utility hard at work. Honestly, I uninstalled that within a week of getting this machine. It doesn't do anything for me anyway.

In the short time i have been using it, i have had nothing but trouble with it. in my opinion, freedom scientific need to put a lot more resources into their testing. it is becoming sloppy. they spend a lot of time telling everyone how good their product is, but have a good look!! all their training material is written with accessibility in mind, obviously. i would accept their standing on the fact that they cannot test for every app out there, but some of the larger ones like netflix have been given no testing at all. try plugging in a set of headfones into a del inspiron laptop. they run the realtec drivers for audio. once you plug anything into the jack, you are asked by windows, what it is, mick headfones etc. if you try to scroll down the control, you will hear things like "ms-web-****" where "****" is a number, set of letters etc. lets face it, this is basic testing. there is too much pride in being the market leader in my opinion. this will change, if they dont test more before releasing something. that is exactly what microsoft appears to do with windows. lets have windows 10, and then about 10 million updates to secure it afterwards. i really think, given the burst of technology especially in the last few years, that people such as ourselves should keep comparing the latest versions of things such as jaws, with the latest versions of free software such as nvda. pat -----Original Message----- From: main@jfw.groups.io [mailto:main@jfw.groups.io] On Behalf Of Cristóbal Sent: Saturday 2 May 2020 18:34 To: main@jfw.groups.io Subject: Re: the latest update to jaws 2020 giving me a fit I found the March 2020 update to be quite buggy. I think the table thing is gone with the most recent April update, but haven't used it enough to say if the Outlook calendar thing was addressed. Got it, Brian.
Don’t mean to be a pain; just wasn’t sure, and I’m trying to be accurate in the notes I’m compiling.
Thanks!

I would suggest those really interested in what's being discussed also look at the following two recent topics on other groups:
https://win10.groups.io/g/win10/topic/73315213 Windows PE ISO file with NVDA installed , specifically message, https://nvda.groups.io/g/nvda/message/73144, if you're looking to source versions of WinPE with NVDA built in. The EXE files were created using Rufus based on what the original poster said to me when I asked. For myself, I would not rely on any ZIP utility as my primary system image backup. There is a reason that system image backup and recovery utilities, and many of them, exist to make the process easier and far more foolproof. -- Brian - Windows 10 Pro, 64-Bit, Version 1909, Build 18363 The purpose of education is not to validate ignorance but to overcome it.

Windows 10 does, but you can't zip your system
while it is running.
And it doesn't matter if win PE is not windows 10,
if you are in win PE you can be using Windows XP and it can copy any NTFS or
FAT32 file system.
The key thing is that you need to not be running
your own operating system to copy all the files with 7Zip, or any zip program,
because it has to copy system files that are in use.
The imaging software that others have posted, know
how to unload and reload critical system files during a backup.
That is why those utilities have always been
necessary for backups, unless you can access your HD without booting up, and
that is what Win PE was made for by Microsoft, or one can do this in Linux too,
but Win PE offers the comfortable Windows environment.

Looking back to the beginning of this thread, I realize I should have been clearer about the fact that I’m using Windows 10 here on my main computer.
I suspect Windows 10 has a .zip utility in it, just like 7.zip for Windows 7?

Hi Tom, Win PE is made by Microsoft, the PE stands for Preinstallation Environment. That is what people are booting up to on a Windows installation disk for setting up Windows for the first time, or to boot up to for system repairs. Microsoft offers it for people to download and use by itself and to customize. A Blind guy named Carlos, who passed away some time back, made one with audio drivers and NVDA on boot-up and lots of utilities. So when you boot up, you are on a desktop environment, only it is not your windows, WinPE is loaded into your computer's RAM, and your C-Drive is your system, but it is just there, as if you had pulled your hard drive and plugged it in as a second drive. So you have full access to all the drive and system files. You can get on-line and listen to audio in the Win PE environment, or you can do system repairs, or copy your hard drive. You aren't running your windows, so there is no issue of windows squawking about this or that file is in use. It has 7Zip on it,so you can use that to zip up your HD, or use one of the image utilities on the CD. It doesn't have eMail installed, but other than that, and the fact that changes won't be on it when you reboot it, it is like free windows. Glenn:
I need some clarification here:
What is WinPE?
And, isn’t 7zip for Windows 7?
I’m using Windows 10 here.

Tom, If you boot to Win PE, you can use 7Zip to zip up your HD and unzip it if you need to at a later time. Also, when you do this, you can delete two system files that are temp files, and will save you the amount of twice your RAM. So if you have 4GB of RAM, you can save 8GB by deleting pagefile.sys and hiberfil.sys before zipping up your HD, and windows will recreate those two files on boot-up. They are just temp files Windows uses as virtual memory.

Hello.
I know this has been addressed before, but could someone suggest an accessible system backup image program that is easy to use independently, and that works well with Jaws?
I routinely back up all my files, but would like to be able to back up my complete hard drive if possible.
Until now, I’ve always understood that these backup image programs have accessibility issues at certain points, but perhaps I’m wrong.
