How can I get at Zoom's "Settings" et. al without being in an actual meeting?
Hi! I believe that I have properly installed the Zoom meeting app. However, when I start it my only options seem to be 1) join a meeting or 2) sign-in. What I would like to do is explore the app’s settings (e.g., accessibility > Keyboard Shortcuts) and other options, but I do not seem to be able to access this. So, must you actually sign-in to an actual meeting before you can access things like “Settings?” How else can I get at my Zoom app’s options? Thanks, Richard

Re: Latest JAWS 2020 and continued Outlook 2016 issues
If the detect tables does not work, another possibility is that layout tables are causing you grief so make sure they are turned off. Web sites have CSS in order to put text into columns and other cute layouts, but Mail generally ignores CSS functions for complex layout so designers end up using tables with multi row or multi column spans that can not effectively be read column by column row by row, so the screen reader ends up either reading things repetitively or else skipping important information. Sometimes the mail will have a plain text alternative either in the same message or in a subscribe button. This of course brings its own problems.

Re: jaws 2020 not starting correctly.
Patrick Murphy <murphy.patrick42@...>
Hi Dave/everyone,
I believe i have a definite answer to the problem!!! Here is what i did.
This is assuming that you have two versions of jaws on the machine, both effected by the 90 day ilm local key, just as mine was. I have jaws2018 and jaws2020. Ok, here we go!
Uninstall jaws2020 leaving behind the shared settings. Delete the user settings. Restart the machine. Uninstall jaws 2018, only this time, take all shared and user settings. Restart the machine. Using narrator or nvda or whatever suits you: Go into add/remove programs. Remove anything with freedom scientific on it, and i mean anything. Use the "windows+r" key and type in "c:\users\username\appdata". Obviously, the "username" part of this command is the account that jaws was running under, most likely your local account. Go into each of the folders here, local, localo and roming. Again, anywhere you see freedom scientific or jaws, delete it. Then go into "c:\programfiles". Again, delete any mention of jaws or freedom scientific. Do the same for programfiles(x86). If you don't have it already, install ccleaner. Select the "registery" option, and scan for issues. If any issues are found, select to fix them. Restart your machine. You should now have a machine that is completely clear of all freedom scientific products, their rubbish left behind, and any mention of them in the registery.
Now, reinstall jaws2018. You will be asked for your authorization, as the local 90 day ilm key is now gone. At last!! Once you reactivate jaws, it runs as normal. Now for the final part. Install the latest version of jaws2020. It will ask you if you want to import the settings from jaws 2018. Select "yes". Jaws 2020 will now ask for activation. Select to run it in 40 minute mode. Set it to start at the logon screen, and always for your username. Don't check the box to start for all users. Restart your machine. Yeo!!! Now it works properly. It still checks while loading (grace period authorization introduced in 2019), but finding nothing, it starts in 40 minute mode, and behaves exactly like it should. As a result, therefore, there is now absolutely no doubt in my mind, that the authorization is the problem/bug. My advice after all of this, is "don't" install a trial 90 day ilm local key, or you will have nothing but trouble. I haven't paid for the actual upgrade yet, but i am hoping, that the newer form of authorization (internet activated), shouldn't have a problem. If anyone likes to comment on this, please let me know. However, i consider the matter closed, as i firmly believe, that i have proved exactly what the problem was. Perhaps, freedomscientific should have a good look at this. Thanks for all your help over the last while, and for all the suggestions. Kindest regards and stay well,
Patrick

Hello Patrick:
I think I may have found the solution to your problem.
In JAWS 2020
1. In the "Automatically Start JAWS" dialog box, uncheck the, "Start JAWS at
the Logon screen", and set the "Start JAWS after logon: to "Never". Click the 2 OK buttons to close the 2 dialog boxes.
2. Unload JAWS 2020.
In JAWS 2018
3. Load JAWS 2018.
4. In the "Automatically Start JAWS" dialog box, check the, "Start JAWS at the Logon screen", and leave the "Start JAWS after logon: at "Never". Click the 2 OK buttons to close the 2 dialog boxes.
5. Unload JAWS 2018.
Back in JAWS 2020
6. Load JAWS 2020.
7. In the "Automatically Start JAWS" dialog box, leave the, "Start JAWS at the Logon screen", unchecked, and set the "Start JAWS after logon: to "always". Click the 2 OK buttons to close the 2 dialog boxes.
8. restart your computer. Hopefully, after you have entered your password, and pressed the OK button to proceed, (that is, if you use the logon screen), JAWS 2020 will start correctly, after the start up procedure has been completed.
When I looked in the "Automatically Start Jaws" dialog boxes for both JAWS 2018 and 2020, I found the "Start Jaws after logon for this user", was set to "Always", in both versions, why this should b, I do not know.
I will be very interested to hear from you if the above procedure solves your problem.

Hi,
Thanks for your response. I am now more convinced than ever, that it is an authorization problem. My internet just went down, and jaws started correctly. I have set the computer to not connect to the internet and it works just fine. When the pc does have an internet connection, it doesn't. I think that, therefore, when it is checking while loading (grace period), it gets into a mess. I will update if i can prove this definitely. Pat

The fact is that you won't have a choice but to upgrade anyways sooner or later and with another Windows 10 update coming very soon it may be sooner rather than later. Even now the emoji panel, for example, is not useable to you with Jaws 2018 and in time there may be other features. If you use Office you will find that it works best with the latest version of Jaws and while I know you said there is always NVDA that is a call you have to make, it wouldn't work for an old Jaws guy like me, I tried it and I just can't get used to how they do stuff. Maybe I don't want to get used to it because I have always kept up my SMA and always used the latest version of Jaws, but once again, that is everybody's choice. All I can say is that is not an issue I have heard about before hence it must be specific to your configuration. I am not usually somebody who says reinstalling Windows from scratch should be your first option, but if you can't or don't want to get a h old of Jaws support to see what they may suggest and if this is a big deal for you otherwise I'd say this maybe an option.

Hi Andrew, i tried that. in jaws 2018, it will let me reactivate using my full licence. it asks me for my actual authorization number. however, when i do this, jaws 2020 is not authorized, as i do not have a valid internet licence for that. this will eliminate the checking and validation of a proper licence, so the problem goes away. i know this, because when i first installed it, it was running in 40 minute mode, and there was absolutely no problem. once i installed the 90 day ilm key, it would not load the jaws window at all after that. as i said, i can quit and restart jaws 2020 and it works fine. i think i am left with two options. one, do as you say and reactivate my jaws 2018 with my old licence and run jaws 2020 in 40 minute mode. two, update to jaws 2020 altogether. if then, the problem goes away, great. if not, i have just wasted the price of an upgrade. regards, pat

Hi Dave,
Yes, i am on the last version of jaws 2018 which is all i am entitled to. I did use the jaws import wizard to copy my shared settings. I have a 90 day ilm key just to try out jaws 2020. Jaws2020 and jaws2018 are now both authorized using the same 90 day key for some reason. With regards to settings etc, i uninstalled both, reinstalled both, removed both again with all settings and shared components, reinstalled jaws2020, but still the problem exists. One peculiar thing though, i started up my computer yesterday from a shutdown, and everything with jaws2020 worked fine. I did the exact same thing just now, and the problem came back. I am convinced at this stage, that it does have something to do with the new "grace period" authorization function introduced in jaws 2019. I think it is loading before it knows for certain whether or not you have a valid key. Sometimes the check works, and sometimes it doesn't and jaws half loads with no actual jaws window. I also think, that it might have something to do with the ilm key, as this is a very old type of authorization for a pc, as against the internet activation method. However, i am not paying for an upgrade until i can get a definite sort-out for this problem. As i said in another post, there is always nvda, but i would rather stay with jaws.
Regards,
Pat

Question 1: With JAWS 18, are you on the last upgrade for your current SMA? Which is why you are using the temporary license for JAWS 2020, so you can try its new and upgraded features?
Question 2: did you use the JAWS function, which copies the settings you set
in JAWS 18 to JAWS 2020?

Hi,
I wasn't aware of this feature, but you could be right. Now that i think of
it, it started right after i installed the temporary authorization (90 days)
that i was given to try it out. That could explain why 2018 works and 2020 doesn't. If it checks while windows is loading, it could be a problem. When i stop and restart it, it is
fine, but then windows is fully up at that time. Any way to disable/check/change this or something?

might that be the JAWS feature touted as new in either 2019 or 2020, saying
that JAWS will speak before checking your authorization, so you don't have to wait so long to hear that it is running. However, it doesn't do anything
till it makes internal checks and decides what context you are running in. So in my opinion it is a totally useless change which FS calls an improvement. At 07:59 AM 4/24/2020, you wrote:

It sounds like J2020 is set to start on the log-in screen. If you're saying that there's no Jaws window when you, Alt + tab, you probably have J2020 running from the system tray. To find the settings for both these items press, Insert + J, to open the Jaws context menu, press the letter, O, to open, Options, and press the letter, B, to open, Basic.
Now tab to Automatically start Jaws... button and press the spacebar to find your Jaws start settings and tab to Okay and press the spacebar when you're through in here. Now tab 3 times or so to, Run Jaws from system tray, and uncheck this if you want the Jaws window to be in the, Alt + Tab, order, then tab to Okay and press enter to save / close.

Re: jaws 2020 not starting correctly.
Patrick Murphy <murphy.patrick42@...>
Hi Dave,
Today, i am going to try to remove the local ilm key as it is effecting both jaws 2020 and jaws 2018 for which i have a full licence. So far, i have been unable to do this. I am then going to uninstall both versions completely, including shared and user settings. I am then going to use nvda, and delete manually, any directories that are left both under users and program files that remain. I will also uninstall anything to do with freedom scientific from the machine. I am then going to reinstall jaws 2018. Hopefully, it will ask me to authorize it properly using the internet activation option, rather than ilm (which i hope will be gone). Then, i will reinstall jaws2020, latest version. If it then works, i think i can safely say, that it is definitely a problem between jaws 2020 and the local ilm key. Your suggestion is appreciated, but in order for me to upgrade properly to jaws 2020, i would like to get a definite answer from either Vispero or sight and sound in the uk, neither of which have been helpful. I don't really want to start mixing up jaws 2018 and 2020 at loading time. My reason for installing jaws 2020 in the first place, was to see if it was worth upgrading too. However, if this problem persists, i will remain with jaws 2018 for as long as is possible. I don't like the total lack of support from the dealers that i have been receiving. What if i run into more problems having bought it? It could then very well be a case of "we have your money, goodbye". I will keep you updated. regards Pat

Hi,
I wasn't aware of this feature, but you could be right.

Hello Patrick:
My last suggestion would be, have JAWS 2018 checked, for the Log On screen, so you can enter your password, then either start JAWS 2020 from the Run dialog box or, set up a short cut key and start it that way.
Good Luck.

Hi,
I wasn't aware of this feature, but you could be right.

Hi,
Thanks for your response.

We are using Zoom to teach students remotely. I use JAWS tandem to follow my students' actions closely. the ZoomText instructor, in a Zoom meeting with her students, needs to see the magnified screen of her students. Zoom does not show her the enlarged screen, so she is unable to see what her students are doing.
Are there settings she can change in order to see the students' screen as they see it?
Thx,
Ann

Hi, Alan. Try opening Outlook. Press JAWS key plus V for Quick Settings. In the search box, type table detection Uncheck this option, TAB to OK, and press ENTER. See if this allows your email to be read correctly. Bill White billwhite92701@...

outlook express folder help
I am now running jaws
2020, windows 7, and outlook express. Before I installed jaws 2020 and after i
had my
e-mail download into
outlook express I could tell how many messages in each folder as i scrolled down
the list of folders. When I scroll down the folders now jaws is not telling
me the number of messages in the folder. Can anyone help me to be able to get
this ability to let me know the number of messages in my folders as I scroll
down through the folders in outlook express. Thank you for your help with this
problem.
