Re: jaws 2020 not starting correctly.
I have never heard or in my entire history with Jaws which goes back 30 years to the Jaws for DOS days, experienced how two separate versions of Jaws can load at the same time and, as was pointed out, "fight".
toggle quoted messageShow quoted text
I use Jaws 2020 and while I don't use a subscription, the "grace period" is not something which seems to have any affect for me in terms of accessing the Jaws menu. The hard fact is that if you are on Jaws 2018 you will most likely sooner rather than later have to upgrade to Jaws 2020 anyways because with every new version of Windows which is released it is more likely that Jaws 2018 may not offer full support for all features. The same applies to Office 365 if you use it. Why don't you completely uninstall Jaws 2020 as well as Jaws 2018, even uninstall shared components and only leave user settings, then reinstall Jaws 2020 and see if that fixes the issue.

Unfortunately, I was only given a 90 day key, as I have a full licence for jaws 2018. I wanted to try out 2020 before upgrading. Now that it is authorized, the problems began. The reason I think it is the new “grace period” authorization, is that if I set it to start at the logon screen, and don’t start it for the user, it works. Windows comes up and I can click on the shortcut with someone’s help, as I cannot see it. If I set it to start always for my user, the problem occurs. Because I installed a 90 day trial licence, now I am stuck with jaws2018 and 2020 using the same key. I was told by sight and sound, that I would have to wait the 90 days, before I could use my real authorization number. In fact, I cannot remove the ilm authorization, or at least, they said that there was no option for this.

I think it might be the new “grace period authorization” thing in jaws2020. I think it is starting up too quickly for windows 10. At the moment, it is authorized for 90 days using ilm. Would it make any difference if it was authorized using the internet? Would this slow down the startup enough? Is there any way to disable this new feature? Pat

Hi Mike,
I have tried all this, I tried to post a full message about everything last night, but it was not approved. I think it was too big. Regardless of what I do with jaws2020 (login screen etc), the first time it starts up, there is no window to go to. Insert+j brings you nowhere whether it is running from system tray or not. If you shut it down (insert+f4) and then restart it, everything is ok. If you don’t start it at the login screen, it still produces no window. Pat

It sounds like J2020 is set to start on the log-in screen. If you're saying that there's no Jaws window when you, Alt + tab, you probably have J2020 running from the system tray. To find the settings for both these items press, Insert + J, to open the Jaws context menu, press the letter, O, to open, Options, and press the letter, B, to open, Basic. Now tab to Automatically start Jaws... button and press the spacebar to find your Jaws start settings and tab to Okay and press the spacebar when you're through in here. Now tab 3 times or so to, Run Jaws from system tray, and uncheck this if you want the Jaws window to be in the, Alt + Tab, order, then tab to Okay and press enter to save / close.

Hi Michelle,
Its just a standard windows 10 home edition laptop. Windows boots up, and then at the sign-screen, jaws starts. I have it set to always start for this user and to start at the log on screen. Works for 2018, but 2020 starts very quickly after sign-in screen so no jaws window can be seen with insert+j or any other way.

While that works well mostly, there's a big annoyance that crops up (for me) every other once-in-a-while that has to do with shell scripts for configuring packages and programs that display their menus within pretty graphic borders. JAWS says line after line of things like "marlet {some number}, hollow-square this, filled square that," etc. These are all either high-value ASCII or Unicode charaqcters, qand they make reading these menus tedious. Is there any way to stop JAWS from reading these things without having to enter each and every character, of which there are many, into an exception dictionary?
