Re: Using Microsoft Teams with JAWS + additional questions
Marilyn Bland <tinkerbelltx@...>
Good morning all,
I’m feeling overwhelmed by all the on-line things that are now being used. My employer is using Meet.google.com for meetings and collaboration. I know this is different from Zoom, but is it also different fromTeams? Are there others on the list using Google Meets? Is Hangouts the same as any of these? Please clarify and give me some good places to learn how to use Google Meets.
Many thanks.

Hi Sameer,
I’m hardly using Teams for three weeks now on a laptop running Windows 10 with jaws 2020 latest update because this is my employer’s recommended tool for remote working.
This app is globally accessible except for defining a “contact group” in the “Chat” tab, “Contacts” subtab.
In order to learn how to use it, I started from this web page:
I did not install any Jaws script yet but if there are some, I’d also like to know.
Hope this helps. Have a nice day. Chris D

Dear List Friends,
Is Microsoft Teams accessible with JAWS or do we need to install additional JAWS scrips to make it accessible? If we need to install additional JAWS scrips, kindly inform me where I can get these scrips.
Also, request you to kindly point me to a source for keystrokes to be used with Microsoft Teams. I am using the latest version of JAWS 2020 on a Windows 10 machine.
Thanking all in advance for any & all assistance.

well, I know that English language represent a challenge when it comes to how synthesizers pronounce homophones, but I believe I was misunderstood. All I
want is someone willing to share their default.jfd file, of
course, assuming that as an native English speaker has already
added the correct pronunciation in many cases. For example, if you guys try to read the following word using eloquence, and then try to read it using vocalizer, you'll notice the difference. the word is voila

Windows Mail in particular takes a little getting used to as you lose focus from the inbox list every time new messages arrive If you hear navigation bar or loading this will mean you have lost focus from the inbox but you will then become a fan of the shift tab key as a press or two of this should land you back on the inbox. This is part of my muscle memory so this has ceased to be annoying. The advantage of Windows Mail for me over Outlook is that it is lightning fast, easy to set up and has a fantastic automatic preview reading feature which allows you to hear the first 2 or 3 lines of an email as you cursor down the inbox. This often allows me to delete mail without even opening it. Occasionally Mail will crash with Jaws, though not with NVDA for some reason. However Mail is so fast at loading I again have got used to just pressing the windows key and pressing Mto launch it again. Outlook is slower but with more bells and whistles but as far as I am aware has absolutely no access issues of any significance. I am using it with Jaws 2019 at the moment to check that nothing has changed before sending this message back to you. I think at the moment it would be difficult to find a better alternative than Mail and Outlook as I believe that there has been access issues in the latest version of Thunderbird which was the other mainstay of accessible email clients. There are some legacy version of Outlook Express which apparently have accessibility support but I do not personally use this. What exactly are the issues you are having with Mail and Outlook? Re: issue with jaws not reading number of message in my outlook folder
Barbara Sheinbein
I had this exact issue. You need to turn off formatting in Outlook. You may need to do this for each Outlook folder since sometimes apply this view to all folders does not work. Since I had trouble figuring where to turn this off, I did have the rep at the Microsoft Disability Help Desk do this for me. All has worked since. Sorry I cannot provide detailed steps to turn this off for you.

Why not just disable uac? It doesn't really do what it promises, and many people will just say yes to whatever they are asked anyway.

Chrome commands question using Windows 10 and JAWS 2020
Patrick Johnson
Good morning group,
I am using Chrome on a Windows 10 machine with JAWS 2020 and I am having trouble with the following tasks which I had no problem completing using Firefox (which has gone completely flaky on my laptop). Opening a file on a web page. In Firefox I could click a file link and I would be given the option to open or save the file. Chrome does not give me this option. According to web searches using CTRL+Enter and/or SHIFT+Enter should do the trick. Neither option works for me. Closing a window and/or going back to the previous window. In Firefox I could use the File, Close Window to complete this task. As an example after performing a Google search I click on a result and after reading it I want to go back to the results page. Web searches have not turned up any viable solutions. Thanks for everyone's help, Patrick

Window coming up alongside UAC dialogue
Daniel Wolak
Hi all, I’m running into an issue with jaws 2020 on Windows10 1909,x64. Every time a uac dialogue comes up, I’m not presented with the dialogue as normal. Rather, the window that comes up is something entitled $$$Secure UAP Background Window. Jaws seems to lag significantly, although I am able to alt+tab into the uac dialogue and then hit alt+y to accept. I’ve sent this to Vispero, but am just wondering if anyone on the list has any ideas about this? Cheers,
Daniel

Hi James
You are correct, it does have to do with the view settings. First go to the view menu Navigate to and activate, change view settings Tab to IMAP messages and press enter

I remember having this problem, but I don’t recall how I overcame it. Tom has posted the method that ought to work, JAWS key+3 on the numpad. Since that doesn’t work for you, you might do a JAWS repair and a Microsoft Office repair. If you’re unfamiliar with either repair method, please re-post.

Re: Would someone share a default.jdf file, please?
Adrian Spratt
Marie,
Interestingly, my Dectalk Express synthesizer read “read” correctly both times in your example, that is, present tense first, then past tense. Whoever is behind this engine, or possibly the JAWS pronunciation itself, figured out a way to tell a synthesizer when to read certain words a certain way. Not all words work as well. “Polish” comes to mind. Whether it’s the surface smoother or a person from Poland, the pronunciation is the same.

Part of the problem could be the weird issue in the English language of spelling words the same but having a different pronunciation depending on where the word is used. Unfortunately a screen reader can only have one way of pronouncing these word so they pick the most common usage. Example is you might read a text today or you may have read it yesterday.

Hi everyone, I like to use eloquence synthesizer because it’s very responsive, and I’m used to it. However, if you use this voice on a regular basis, you’ll have probably noticed that eloquence awkwardly mispronounce lots of words, some of them very common words. So, I wonder if someone has a default dictionary for jaws that is willing to share. Besides, given that I’m not a native English speaker, all too often I can’t figure out how a word is accurately pronounced. If someone could share with me their default.jdf file, I’d really appreciate it.
Tanks in advance
