The one good thing about David Pinto is that he makes this program fun and rewarding in its own way. He spends thousands of hours perfecting his scripts, and will provide help and documentation for his work. And most important, he’ll make it work with Jaws, not no silly animation such as Talking Typing Teacher.
From: main@jfw.groups.io [mailto:main@jfw.groups.io] On Behalf Of JM Casey
Certainly agree with your principle Glenn … though I am not sure it’s always entirely wrong to profit from a niche market like the disabled, certainly the entire model should be different and it’s ridiculous that the costs for some of these blindness-related products is so inflated.
I don’t know anything about typing tutorials nowadays, but I certainly remember some on disk for the Apple II computer. In the mid/late 80s when I was using the things, they were already old and I think most software was already in the public domain or close to. There were a few fun typing games … one that was kind of like space invaders and made use of the limited Apple speaker sound capability as well as the Echo speech synthesiser, whose pitch would increase as the letters got “closer” to you. Fun times. Haha
From: main@jfw.groups.io <main@jfw.groups.io> On Behalf Of Glenn / Lenny
Honestly, typing is one of the most important skills lacking in the Blind. Mostly among the newly Blind. However, with that in mind, in my opinion, I would state that it is despicable to make profit off a typing program designed for the Blind. I think makers of software for the Blind, or other disabilities if it exists, need to stop making a living off the backs of the disabled, and spearhead an open-source movement for specialized software for the disabled, and get a real job. It will always be a small market and the cost will always be ten to twenty times the cost to the consumer of similar software, to the general public because of its limited market. That is why the rehabilitation-specific software that state agencies purchase cost a couple million dollars per agency and about a third of a million annually to maintain it, for a product that by standards of complexity could otherwise easily be done as open-source software. I have a degree in business management, so it's not like I don't understand how business works. And I find it even worse when the disabled themselves engage in profiting off their brothers and sisters, especially when they have or still do exist on a disability-related income. But to my original point, there needs to be an open-source typing program designed for the Blind, because a good one would incorporate some screenreader keyboard commands, Fun With Typability does this, I don't recall if TTT does, it's been a long time since I taught with that one. So they are decent products in terms of what is needed, they only need to be free to consumers. Perhaps they should operate like some programs do, free for home use, and a cost for business use.

Re: free jaws help
I assume whatever registration steps you completed took care of the license you'll need to activate the JAWS you install. You can go to the following site to download the latest JAWS 2020 in order to install it:

Hi Jerry,
If you don’t have a JAWS 2020 icon on your desktop, you have to assume it didn’t install. There is no harm in downloading and install again. If it did install, it will only go into repair mode so no harm done.

I registered on the Freedom Scientific Licensing portal to get the free Jaws license that is available until the end of June. After getting register I click on the download and install the program on to my computer, but I cannot find the new Jaws version on my computer and the only Jaws program version of 16.0 that I have on my computer is the only one I can find. Can anyone tell me what went wrong with the process and how I can fix to get the current subscription version of Jaws on my computer.

Opening a link that is in a google docs document with JAWS2020
Shai
Hello,
I have a google docs document that has links in it. JAWS identifies these as links but I am not able to interact ie navigate to and access it. Is there a means other than downloading the document as a Microsoft word file and accessing the link in the document this way to be able to access it from within Google Docs itself? I only have view access to the file but was able to enable screen reader mode. I tried pressing tab and also pressing insert with f7 in the hopes that JAWS would bring up a links list but tab did not do anything and pressing insert with f7 said that this feature is only available within a virtual document. I am using JAWS2020 latest update with Google Chrome browser on a Windows10 machine. Thank you in advance for all responses.

Re: Accessibility of Vlc with Jaws?
David Griffith
As far as I am aware I don’t have any problem accessing preferences in VLC with either Jaws or NVDA. I just hit control P and tab through the options. It may be that there are parts I am missing that I am not aware of though? What is the problem for you? I have resisted upgrading to the absolutely latest version of VLC I am still on 3.0.7.1. I am glad others are still having a good experience with WinAmp. For me on several Windows installs on both my Desktop and Laptop I was experiencing lockup and crashes apart from the problem not playing some modern radio streams which VLC seemed to have no problem with. This experience made me personally think it was time to move on to something that was still being developed and supported. David Griffith

nVDA still won't read preferences etc though for me. Does it work for you? Otherwise, yeah there is certainly more feedback for status and things like that.
I have no trouble with Winamp and the latest build of windows 10, and I use it for audio -- but I play a lot of vieos and VLC is hands down the best player I have found for that. There's a lot of power under the hood and really I've only scratched the surface.

There are masses of keystroke which work with VLC - in particular I love the ability to speed up and slow down podcasts on the fly but I agree that there is a big gap for scripts providing information.
I have looked in vain for VLC scripts.
As a guide to what could be done you only have to load the NVDA VLC addon which completely transforms VLC information feedback. For example or all the information you require you only have to press the I key.
Often I quit Jaws when I am going to be using VLC as the experience is so much better supported.
to given that WinAmp is increasingly unsupported and to some extent obsolete, I moved to VLC as WinAmp kept on crashing under Windows 10, and failed to play some streams that VLC had no problem with, it seems utterly bizarre that Jaws provides no support for VLC at all.

I think the best Podcast App for Windows is Speak On Media Suite. It has certainly been fuller featured than QCast for years.
I confess an interest as I am nearing the end of making a Podcast series on Speak On – ironically I was recording the first part of the 9th Podcast on the range of features in Speak On today actually focussing on the app’s abilities as a Podcast Reader. This should be ready in the next day or so. It actually has 3 Podcasts apps within it application.
The Suite also has what is, as far as I am concerned by a country mile the best featured ePub Book reader, far more featured than QRead, an Audio / Daisy Book app which again I think is the best featured audio book player. It is my preferred Audio Daisy Book reader more than FS Reader but it does not support text based xml formats. It also has a CD app for playing Audio and Daisy Audio CDs and also includes a full featured Music player. If you are in the UK it also integrates directly into the RNIB Newsagent service for downloading Newspaper and Magazines, again via an optional additional app Plugin downloadable within the app itself. As well as Tunein Radio there is a specialist optional VI Radio app and also in one of my Podcasts I show how the Other Media app can also be used as a third Internet Radio app using a downloadable Internet Radio folder playlist structure. It is very full featured I am constantly astonished at how little attention it has garnered over the few years. This is why I have been doing the Podcast series over the last few months demonstrating the capabilities of the app. The main obstacle people tend to have is that the app is self voicing and uses eSpeak as the default voice on install. However I show in my first Podcast this can easily be changed to a Sapi 5 voice to make the app sound far more friendly. There are a few other aspects of the app which take a little getting used to, the main one being that the confirmation OK or cancel options are in the alt based menu system rather than buttons on dialogues boxes. This is fine once you get used to it however.

Hi,
For years, I have used the QCast program to download or play podcasts, but although I was able to install and even activate it, it either won't download podcast episodes or in many cases won't even add the podcast at all.
Anyone have any suggestions or a suggestion for other programs?
Thanks,
