Re: Outlook and JAWS
Yes, I think it’s inadvisable to have messages automatically deleted from trash.
The command to delete a message permanently is shift-del. Again, for most of us, inadvisable.

Chris,
Then what I'd suggest is checking whether those things that are announced as "Other suggestion" might actually be in your Contacts/Address book. Things that are resident there will never be easily purged from autocomplete unless they are first purged
from contacts.
This can be insanity making when, in cases like Gmail, they create a "behind the scenes" category of Contacts where anyone you've ever sent or received a message from that you didn't mark as spam gets added to the "All Contacts" category, which most
people have no idea exists. If this is being synced into Outlook (but not vice versa) things can get even more insane.

Reminder: Leasey, Add-on Software for JAWS, Starts Tonight at 8:00 PM Eastern, All Are Welcome
David Goldfield <david.goldfield@...>
While this demonstration is a presentation of the Philadelphia
Computer Users Group for the Blind and Visually Impaired all are
welcome to participate.
Meeting
Topic: a Demo of the Leasey Software to Be Used With JAWS or
Fusion
Group:
the Philadelphia Computer Users Group for the Blind and Visually
Impaired
Date:
Friday, March 13, 2020
Time:
8:00 PM Eastern
Introduction
If
you’ve been a user of the JAWS screen reader for
even a short time you know that it’s rich in features and
capabilities and possesses an impressive array of configuration
options. However, as powerful as JAWS may be there is a third
party program which you can add to your existing copy of JAWS
which offers even more tools and capabilities to make using JAWS
even easier. Many of these features will allow you to more
easily complete tasks and will definitely increase your
productivity. Meet Leasey, which I will be demonstrating during
the next phone meeting of the Philadelphia Computer Users Group
for the Blind and Visually Impaired.
Leasey
is a program written by Hartgen Consultancy. It
consists of over 50 separate features but it can be broken down
into two components, which are Leasey Basic and Leasey Advanced.
Leasey Basic
Leasey
Basic consists of a menu-driven interface to access the programs
and functions of your computer. Instead of dealing with the
start menu and the desktop pressing a single key opens the
Leasey Main Menu, which contains options such as Write a
Document or Letter, Check Your Email, Surf the Internet, etc.
Pressing enter on any of these options opens a submenu with even
more options. Leasey Basic also contains context-sensitive help
which provides information on where you are on the computer and
what you can do. These menus and help screens are spoken by a
friendly, female human voice known as Leasey. This can help
users who are new to the computer to slowly transition not only
to using synthesized speech but in using their computer. Leasey
Basic is ideal for new or novice users, users with cognitive
disabilities or those who want a friendly, consistent way to
access their computer.
Leasey Advanced
Some
readers who are more experienced users may be wondering if
Leasey has any features which are relevant to them. This is
where Leasey Advanced comes in and will be featured during the
bulk of our upcoming demo. Leasey Advanced contains so many
features that we won’t be able to show you all of them in the
time allotted. However, here are some of the features which
we’ll be demonstrating.
- Leasey
Clips. This allows you to store up to twelve separate blocks
of text into clipboard-like areas which can then be pasted in
a document. These text blocks are preserved even after
restarting your computer.
- Leasey
Texts. You can store an unlimited list of text blocks, such as
names, addresses, signatures, etc. These blocks of text can be
named using a title of the user’s choosing and can be recalled
from a list. Optionally, you can use an abbreviation to paste
a block of text, such as typing “addr” to paste an address.
- Leasey
Select. Easily select text by using intuitive hotkeys to mark
the beginning and end of the block. There’s even a way to mark
the end of a block of text and then have that text copied to
the clipboard.
- Leasey
Search. Search for information from a variety of sources no
matter where you located. Examples include Google, the NLS
catalog and databases to look up information about music or TV
shows. We will also demo searching Last.fm for song lyrics as
well as an excellent weather search to obtain detailed weather
information.
- In
Microsoft Word press hotkeys to move the cursor to the next or
previous spelling error as well as to the next or previous
grammatical error without the need to toggle the virtual
cursor.
- A
simpler interface to Word’s spell checker.
- How to
quickly unprotect a Word file
- How to
obtain help on accessing All Leasey commands and to remind
yourself and/or to learn Leasey keystrokes
Following
the demo we’ll be happy to answer questions from participants.

Don’t press enter on the one you want to remove- just hit delete. HTH.

Hi George,
Here is what happens in the Outlook 365 app when I try to apply your advice:
- I opened a new message to perform the test by pressing <ctrl+n>.
- In the “To:” field of this message, I typed the first letters of an address I want to remove. I then heard a small jingle and the suggestion list was popped up.
- Since the address I wanted to delete was not the first one suggested, I down arrowad to it and typed <enter>.
- For sure, this address has been added to the “To:” field. Therefore, I typed the left arrow until Jaws said me it has been selected.
- At this time, when I pressed the <delete> key, this address was removed from my “To:” field.
- After also removing the remaining semicolon and extra space character from the “To:” field, I retyped the first letters I typed at step (2).
- I then arrowed down and noticed that although the address was removed from the “To:” field at step (5), it still remains in the suggested list.
I’d also like to thank the people who suggested me to remove these unwanted addresses from some address book but it seems that these addresses do not belong to any of my address books.
Many thanks. Have a nice day. Chris D

When you get the email you want to remove by typing it in the field you need to hit enter to put it in the field.
Then you need to left arrow to it is selected or red to you and then hit deleate.
Hi Adrian, Thom and all,
Thanks to all for your fast responses. So, since it works for yyou, I tried with different screen readers, in case it could be a problem with my jaws configuration.
Neither NVDA, nor the windows 10 narrator could solve my problem. Here is an illustration of what I am trying to do:
- I create a new mail by pressing <ctrl+n>.
- In the “To:” field, I begin typing the first letters of the address I want to remove.
- I press the down or up arrow keys one or more times until the screen reader speaks me the address I want. For Jaws or NVDA, which have braille support, I also can
read the suggestion on my braille display.
- If I press the <delete> key, the suggested address disappears from my braille display and only the letters I typed remain in the “To:” field. However, when I arrow
up and down to see more suggested addresses, the one I hoped to remove by pressing <delete> while the screen reader was saying it still appears.
So, is there an outlook configuration setting to change for this to work for me like it does for you please?
Many thanks. Have a nice day. Chris D

In Outlook 2016, the method that works for me is to set up a new message, then type the first letter of the email address I want to delete. I arrow down through the resulting list and, when I have focus on the address,
I press the delete key.
It doesn’t seem to work in the mail app either, as I’m wanting to get rid of some contacts I never use any more. Any help would be appreciated.

Hi all,
With Jaws 2020, I’d like to know whether there is a way to remove one or more items from the address autocompletion list of Microsoft Outlook 365.
With older Outlook versions like 2010, and older versions of Jaws, I could select one no more wanted address and type the <delete> key instead of the <tab> key and it was removed from the autocompletion list. But now,
this does not seem to work with the Outlook 2016 app which was installed by my subscription to Office 365, and Jaws version 2020.2001.70.
Many thanks in advance for any advice. Have a nice day. Chris D

This can be insanity making when, in cases like Gmail, they create a "behind the scenes" category of Contacts where anyone you've ever sent or received a message from that you didn't mark as spam gets added to the "All Contacts" category, which most people have no idea exists. If this is being synced into Outlook (but not vice versa) things can get even more insane. --

You don't, at least if it's not an optional update. People need to accept that, occasionally, even perfect updates (when we're talking about the whole embedded base of users) will "burp" when installing on a given machine. Who knows why and, when it's on a statistically insignificant number, who cares? Very often uninstalling then promptly reinstalling actually fixes the problem. Or just uninstalling and waiting for Windows Update to fetch that update again, or a cumulative update that follows it. This is a normal, and typical, part of owning a computer and has been for decades. It just happens every once in a blue moon for any given user. Knowing how to roll back, and then either intentionally reapplying or just sitting back and waiting, without nail-biting, is the way to go. When there are genuinely bad updates these "make the press" and these days, with OS telemetry, tend to get stopped in their tracks long before any but the few poor souls who happen to be in the very earliest cohort(s) have been affected. That's cold comfort to them, but it also points out why having an external backup drive and a backup protocol you follow on a regular cycle is a basic element of computer ownership if you value your data and not having to reconfigure Windows from scratch in the event of a catastrophic failure from any of a number of causes. If you don't take backups you will, at some point, lose everything. And I can say that from personal experience (which is what made me wise up and begin backing up) and much professional observation. It may be only once in a lifetime, but . . . --

Re: Outlook 2016: Is it possible to remove items from the addresses autocompletion list?
Hi Brian,
Oops, yes. You are right since there is one drop-down only. However, this list is filled with two types of items: so-called “recent suggestions” and “other suggestions”. When you select an item, you are informed about its type by hearing
what your screen reader says at end of it. You can either hear “(Recent suggestion)” or “(Other suggestion)”. After some try&fail attempts, I noticed that if I press the delete key on an item at end of which Jaws says “(Recent suggestion)”, this item is removed
from the autocompletion list. However, if I press the delete kay on an item at end of which Jaws says “(Other suggestion)”, the item is not removed.
Hope my explanation makes sense. Have a nice day. Chris D

I must admit I was misled by those two lists, namely “Recent suggestions” and “Other suggestions”.
And I must admit that I am completely mystified by this comment, as I have no point of reference for "two lists" during autocomplete, only one, the dropdown that appears below the To, CC, or BCC fields when one begins typing an address
in them. That doesn't mean I don't believe that such could exist, as we all know that MS-Office programs have hundreds of optional settings that most of us never use, but that any one of us might use.
Also, I didn't even try it since the DEL key worked, but when those names appear in the dropdown list there is a delete button that appears to the right of each entry. I'd have to presume that's accessible in some way, but I don't have time at the moment to
play with that to determine how.

But once you remove the offending KB update, how do you prevent
Windows 10 from automatically installing it again surreptitiously
andcausing the same problems all over again?

With regard to this, here's the part of my "standard Windows 10
revival script" that will allow you to find out what your most
recently installed updates are, whether you choose to uninstall
them or not:
If you are experiencing unexpected
issues immediately or very shortly after any Windows update
has been applied, then the first thing you should do is use
the Windows 10 built-in capability to uninstall the latest
update that’s suspected of causing the issue:
1. Open Settings, Update
& Security. This should take you to the Windows
Update Pane by default.
2. In the Windows Update Pane, locate
the View update history control, and activate it.
3. In the View Update History dialog,
locate the Uninstall updates link and activate it.
4. In the Installed Updates dialog,
the updates will be listed in groupings, with the groups
alphabetically ordered, and the items within each group
ordered by date – most recently installed first (if no one has
changed the defaults). In most cases, you’ll be looking to
uninstall a Microsoft Windows update, and those are generally
the final group. The number of updates available for
uninstalling is shown in parentheses after the Microsoft
Windows group name.
5. Almost all Windows Updates will have a KB number
associated with them, and if you know that use this as what
you search on for the actual update. Select it.
6. Activate the Uninstall button located
above the list of updates, and the selected update will be
uninstalled.
