Could it be that that particular key combination bypasses the question about "Are you sure you want to quit JAWS" and it turns off JAWS immediately? If you have JAWS set to a hot key it shouldn't be any problem bringing it up again, I'd think.

I was tempted to suggest that you find out by invoking the key identifier with insert-1 on the number row above the letters. However, I just tried it, and JAWS shut down. It's the first key combination I've tested that works even in this mode.

Outlook 2010 search and JAWS 13

Hi Everyone,
Is a search in Outlook 2010 with JAWS 13.0.718 even possible? I can't get to any results and I'm not even sure if a search has even happened. When I tab from the search edit box after pressing enter I go to a close the search button. If I turn on the JAWS cursor I can arrow around and I hear what sound like many search options but how I turn these on I have no idea. Does anyone have a working procedure of how to do this? Hello. Insert + windows key + F4 turns off JAWS. This is useful when JAWS is not responding and is not speaking. This turns it off and you can turn it on after some seconds.

John, The initial "Tablet/Smartphone" version of Office "15" in Windows 8 does not have Outlook. Please note that the discussion is about a BETA version of Windows 8/Office "15". Windows 8 will have "native" email/calendar apps. So, anyone that uses Windows 8 will not have to get Office "15" for email, they can just use the built-in Microsoft version of the email/calendar "app". See the following web page for details on Win8 apps: http://www.theverge.com/microsoft/2012/2/8/2784252/windows-8-consumer-preview-applications If you are planning on running Office "15" on a standard Windows desktop (Windows 7 or Windows 8), Outlook "15" should be included, but I can't cite any sources at this time. John,

re: Crazy names for software
toggle quoted messageShow quoted text
Short answer: Microsoft Office 2010 = Office "14", and Office "15" will come out later in 2012. It might be called Office 2012 or 2013. Long answer: http://www.zdnet.com/blog/btl/windows-8-analysis-one-thing-right-and-two-things-wrong/49909?tag=btxcsim excerpt: "Microsoft has always been afraid to offend any of its potential customers, so it typically piles tons of features on top of the existing codebase and ends up with a Frankenstein monster like Microsoft Office." ---end excerpt--- Office 15 might be called Office 2012 if it is released as part of a bundle with Microsoft Windows 8 on "ARM" tablets/smartphones. Otherwise, it might be Office 2013. Sidenote: ARM refers to 32 bit RISC (simplified) processor chips that consume low power, and are used in smartphones, tablets, etc. (they compete with Intel). Win8 will include the new "Metro" GUI (primarily designed for Tablets/Smartphones), but can also run a Win7 style GUI. Here is a blog post from a well known computer industry journalist on the topic of Windows 8/ARM and Office 2015: http://www.zdnet.com/blog/microsoft/getting-touchy-with-office-15-surface-20-and-windows-8/11840 Please note that the "Office 15" that will be released on Windows 8/ARM will not include Outlook. (!) Some computer industry "experts" have already predicted that they do not think that Microsoft will "do Windows 8 right" (on tablets/smartphones), and that as such, it is the beginning of a slow end for Microsoft's business (monopoly) as we know it. To me, "Metro" looks, superficially, really stupid. (As such, it probably reflects how MS executives think of their customers.) Its like the "Ribbon" on steroids. As consumers move to alternate products such as iPad and Android, developers will no longer be dependent on the Microsoft "ecosystem". Eventually most of Microsoft's "cash cow" business will go away in the consumer area, leaving only "enterprise" infrastructure software, such as servers. Microsoft is attempting to make a big move into "cloud computing" also. Microsoft Office will be one of the main battlegrounds in the upcoming industry wars. Microsoft's strengths and weaknesses will be revealed and become critical. High geek culture at MS became repulsive posturing when Bill Gates departed? In my opinion, all of the bad karma and creepiness associated with Microsoft's bad business practices (and junk architecture) for 20+ years will probably come back to bite them in the posterior. Finally. At best, Microsoft might eventually evolve into something like IBM: a formerly dominant company that re-focused on core competency in the enterprise. The difference is that IBM always had high quality (elite market), and Microsoft has always been about mediocrity (mass market). So, perhaps Microsoft will become another Novell. Also see: http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Microsoft_Office excerpt: Microsoft Office 15 is reportedly in Build 15.0.2703.1000 (version 15), and has reached Milestone 2. It sports a revamped application interface; the interface is based on Metro Design Language, the interface of Windows Media Center and Windows Phone. Microsoft Outlook has received the most pronounced changes so far; for example, the Metro interface enables users to have access to a new visualization for scheduled tasks. PowerPoint will include more templates and transition effects, and OneNote a new splash screen.[24] On May 16, 2011, new images of Office 15 were revealed, showing Excel with a tool for filtering data in a timeline, the ability to convert Roman numerals to Arabic numerals, and the integration of advanced trigonometric functions. In Word, the capability of inserting video and audio online as well as the broadcasting of documents on the Web were implemented. Microsoft has promised support for Open Office XML Strict starting with version 15, a format Microsoft ha s! submitted to the ISO for interoperability with other office suites, and to aid adoption in the public sector. ---end excerpt---

Subject: RE: [Bulk] Microsoft Outlook 2010 crashing issue No kidding. I thought it was just me. Yes, that object API for Office really can cause some issues since it is used almost completely free of jaws scripting alone. I wonder if office 2012 would be better for me. I haven't kept track, but is there even an office 2012? If so, I'm ordering it from the V.A. I get these kinds of things free since they cater towards me. I just have to call a million times and bug them until they are tired of dealing with me. I have a lousy VIST coordinator. She is supposed to send me back up to Palo Alto, Ca to train for the iPhone. Anyway, I digress... I think they are using delays without allowing the program to perform tasks in the background. Like a Delay(10,0) makes it so everything on the system stop processing while jaws catches up, and a Delay(10, 1) allows background applications to continue its processing. Wish they would put in a safety in there so you don't end up in a constant loop of waiting. My JAWS sometimes does not recover and I have to tell my wife to click the close outlook button after it puts up that non responsive dialog window. I think I should complain to freedom scientific about this. Either that or hope office 2012 is out there and will be better with JAWS 13. Subject: Re: [Bulk] Microsoft Outlook 2010 crashing issue John, I'm using Outlook 2007 and notice that JAWS 13 (on Windows 7) sometimes pauses for a period of 20 or so seconds and then the message I was reading finally closes. Happens once or twice a day, so not very often. It's not a crash in this situation. However I have noticed that JAWS will lock up once in a while in the calendar if I try to move through dates too quickly, or have just made a change to an appointment. This crash requires that I use the Insert+Windows+F4 keystroke, and even also launching Narrator before I can break the jam. So I do see what you're experiencing, but not as often. It sucks, but I'm just hoping that over time, FS will figure out what's going on and fix it. Frankly I think there's a memory overlap with the object model and system memory. As long as the object model clears and does not "leak" it stays away from system memory. I'm no expert, but somehow I think JAWS has become such a memory hog that it's encroaching on areas of memory where it isn't welcome. There seems to be many delays in the program that cause it to lock up, like sloppy coding for example. Whenever I reply to a message or start a new one, or just read emails, Outlook just locks up and I get a long delay followed by JAWS locking up. Sometimes if I wait long enough and alt tab away I can gain control again, but most of the time the crash message comes up for outlook. I really like Outlook because of my several profiles to choose from, but it really bugs me that this issue happens all the time. I haven't reinstalled Office yet, but I am not sure that will help.
