Re: Braille Printers suggestion
hello. The Index Braille Basic also has a network connection, so you don't actually need a parallel or Serial to USB adapter if you have an ethernet jack on your home network that is available. If you don't have such a jack available, I suggest the Prolyphic USB to Serial adapter to attach to the serial port of the printer. The Prolyphic adapters work with Mac, Windows, Linux and other OS's, as well as having drivers that are easily installed, if they're not already available when you plug it in.
Hope that helps. -Brian

I agree. All I use now for security on windows 10 windows defender and windows firewall. They perform as well or better than the third party options. However there is no one single product which will protect you from anything or yourself.

Hello Glen:
I do not know where you got the idea that Microsoft were reluctant to produce their own Antivirus software. If that was the case, why did they produce Microsoft Essentials for Windows XP, Windows Vista and Windows 7.
As far as I know, Windows Defender, including its Antivirus component, was always going to be available as the default protection software, for windows8, 8.1 and Windows 10.

I agree, I only use Microsoft's Defender, and I must say that it was long over-due, Microsoft should have been protecting their system from the start. I think that they were getting into trouble with anti-trust suits like with it's Internet Explorer and other such programs that seemed to keep the competition out, so MS was reluctant to make its own anti-virus program for fear that they were again killing off competition. Windows defender is not effective. A completely fiasco software. We know that the first virus in computer history was written by Bill Gates. So why do we trust Microsoft so much? Kaspersky says there is no such thing. They even say we can show our source code. Despite this, I do not go and use an antivirus that does nothing. Kaspersky also has a free antivirus.

Why would anyone trust a paid anti-virus program who developers are based in Russia? There have been allegations that this company may even be involved in the Russian hacking scheme to influence the outcomes of the 2016 and now the 2020 elections, and that it may even have close ties to Vladimir Puten. I have no idea whether these allegations are true or not, but why take chances when Windows Security is free and totally accessible and does a satisfactory job?

I won't say much about using Kaspersky with NVDA since this is a JAWS-specific list. However, the following link will take you to a detailed review which I wrote discussing NVDA's performance with Kaspersky.
<https://davidgoldfield.wordpress.com/2016/11/16/kaspersky-antivirus-a-review-for-screen-reader-users/>When using Kaspersky Antivirus with JAWS I have sometimes seen JAWS being able to read the various controls as I navigate to them with tab or shift-tab but this accessibility seemed to stop working after a while. I am guessing this could have been due to a Kaspersky program update but I cannot confirm this without uninstalling it and reinstalling an earlier version which I honestly don't wish to do. For now the tab key reads nothing and, as you say, using the touch cursor is necessary when navigating in the main window. If you access the program from the system tray choosing the Settings or Task Manager options may be more accessible with JAWS. I do feel that some scripting could solve for many of these issues. Once I learn a little more about scripting I am willing to try and write some Kaspersky scripts but it's going to be a while before this can happen.

Tab and Shift+Tab seem not to work at all while I am in the PC Cursor mode. I have to use the touch cursor to operate the software, and it is not always convenient to use this specific cursor.
Moreover this behavior is very illogical to me, as KTS’s interface seems to be standard WPF or something of that sorts.

Re: Greetings and Kaspersky Total Security with JAWS
Your antivirus program is only as good as the one using it. If you're an idiot online, Caspersky will last about 10 minutes. If you know what you're doing, Windows Defender/MSSE and common sense is really all you need. The difference is your ability to pay attention. A shocking number of people tend to forget how to do that as soon as they stick themselves in front of anything electronic. Which, I mean, whatever works--it's those people that keep me employed.

I use this software and it is essential for me to have this one pretty wellaccessible.. The competing screenreader works with it OK, however JAWS has its problems.
Maybe I am doing something wrong (I’m pretty new to JFW, I use it for less than a year).

JAWS performs a hit song thanks to inaccessible document! -unencrypt
Good morning!
What happens when JAWS reads an inaccessible flyer? Well, sometimes a new hit song is discovered! Enjoy it here and laugh on this lovely Thursday:
https://twitter.com/neatwithadam/status/1235204761365999617?s=21
This video was made in an effort to spread awareness for digital accessibility yesterday, during National AT Awareness Day, and it has a lot of views! Today, I figured the audience it impacts most would enjoy it as well, so I wanted to pass it along.
Enjoy!

Re: Greetings and Kaspersky Total Security with JAWS
Dave, Windows existed long before windows XP, and had no virus protection other than third-party software. And when it did start producing something, it was under par compared with the third-party software. Now it has gotten its act together, since Windows 7. Glenn

Hi, While I appreciate your feelings , the most recent Freedom Scientific podcast stated that Windows Defender is very effective and the most effective anti virus for most users. And Eric from Vespero said this assumes that you are not "doing something stupid" while surfing the net. I have used Windows Defender and has done just fine. Now, nothing against other anti virus programs but let's not trash Defender just based on personal experiences or preferences.

This Moscow-based company has been banned from doing business with US government agencies, so as the saying goes, where' there's smoke, there's fire. Although Kaspersky's anti-virus products may be legit, the company's real mission is highly questionable, regardless of anyone's political beliefs, and I personally would not trust their software products when Windows Security is free and probably just as effective.

Hello. While I have not used Kaspersky Total Security I have been using Kaspersky Antivirus for approximately five years with both JAWS as well as with NVDA. I can definitely confirm your findings.

Re: Automatically start the screen shade with Jaws
Hello,
You can use the layered keystroke Insert and Spacebar together, and then F11. THis is a toggle, so same keystrokes to turn it off. It is temporary, so if you restart your computer, screen shade will be off again.
