then you have either a problem with protection software or a goof up in your system, run a system file check (run, cmd in it and enter, then sfc/scannow in the command prompt)

and have a restore or backup disk available so if it needs it you can get to a fresh copy of the files that sfc will try to replace.

I know two methods, although there may be some other better way I am not aware of:

If you want to pick a contact from your contact list:
Open the new message dialog (Control+N).
Starting from the “To:” field, shift tab once to the “Select contacts” button, and activate it by pressing the space bar.
Arrow down the list to the contact you want.
Press tab once to move to the “To:” edit box and press the space bar to activate it.
Press tab again and the name and address of the contact will appear in the “TO:” field.

Another way is to start typing the name or address of the contact in the “To:” field. The full contact will automatically be finished, but the Jaws PC cursor doesn’t read it. However, if you shift tab once, and then tab back to the “To:” field, you will hear Jaws read the contact name and address, and you are ready to tab forward to the subject field.

Re: About to go to Windows 7 -- Arrgh!

Drew Hunthausen

Dave,
Since I switched to windows 7 about a year ago, I have had no regrets. I
think it is much easier to navigate and find things with the new interface;
though many things are very similar to XP. The only other advice I have is
that if you use a Braille display not made by FS, you should get the 32 bit
version of windows 7 to make sure the display works.

Re: About to go to Windows 7 -- Arrgh!

The thing to be concerned about with XP isn't from an accessibility
standpoint, but the fact Microsoft won't actually support it in 3 years, and
there's no guarantee Freedom Scientific will either. So, you'd just be
upgrading the OS at that time anyway. There's no real major obsticles to
Windows 7 with JAWS, and most of the major programs, even a few older
versions of those programs, will work on 7. Case in point, this reply is
being written on a Windows 7 laptop running Office 2003 and JAWS 12. Your
only problem is going to be older hardware, but since you're getting a new
laptop anyway, I wouldn't much worry about that.

There are advantages and disadvantages to both. I prefer XP, but mainly
because I'm a big Total Recorder user, and XP lets me keep Jaws out of
whatever I'm recording, and 7 does not. I'm also more use to XP, but they're
not as different as you might think. I tried 7 for a couple weeks and had
little trouble getting use to it. My main concern with XP is whether I'll be
able to find drivers for newer hardware.Where are you getting this laptop? I

Hi,
I've been using 7 for almost a year and don't really notice many differences between it and Vista. I really like it aside from a few things I wish I could find out how to do. And, this is said from the lady that came into Windows from Unix kicking and screaming. LOL I think you'd be OK with 7 unless you use a lot of old programs that aren't compatible with it. I've only found one that I couldn't find a good replacement yet for.
Good luck and email me privately if you need or want any help.

I can validate that. I've had a couple conversations with Eric trying to
solve problems that tech support and John Carson couldn't solve, and he does

know his way around Jaws like a blind person. The old phrase, "those who can

do, and those who can't teach" is idiotic. Unless you can do something, and
do it well, you're not qualified to teach.

Chris and everyone:

Eric Damery is not blind. He is sighted.

Having said that, unlike so many sighted people who attempt to train
visually impaired people to use JAWS, Eric knows as nuch, if not more
about JAWS than anyone, plus, he can use JAWS without a monitor.

I have seen Eric, walk into a room where there are a number of peple using
JAWS, assess what they are doing and, within a few seconds, even though
there are no monitores turned on, he can tell which of them are having
problems and what they are.

I have been at demonstrations of JAWS, where Eric has stood or sat along
side or behind the monitor, and not been able to see what the monitor is
displaying, yet, giving an excellent demonstration on how to use JAWS.

Several years ago, during a visit to the UK, I met someone there who is
sighted and who claimed to be able to train visually impaired people to
use JAWS. I asked them, if they could use JAWS in the same way that a
person who has no sight at all or who has limited vision would have to do,
that is without a monitor. When this person said that they could not, I
said that, in my opinion, they were not qualified to teach JAWS to any
visually impaired person, because they had not even made the attempt to
try and use a computer without a monitor. I went on to say that they
might be able to teach the commands but, unless they could use JAWS in the
same way as a user of JAWS would have to do, they had no street
credibility and, to use an American saying, "nice try, but no cigar". I
pointed out that what they were doing was no different, than a person who
had no sight at all and, with no experience, attempting to teach someone
who had sight to drive a car.

Sincerely:

Dave Durber

About to go to Windows 7 -- Arrgh!

Dave...

I may be soon migrating (disassociating?) to Windows 7 on my work machine as
it's time for a new laptop. Do any of you feel it incumbent to stop me
before I do something regretful? I do have the option of having my new
laptop fitted with XP Pro, 32-bit. Henceforth my request for your sage
advice, everyone.

Re: [Bulk] JAWS not reading message in windows live mail

Hi Dave,

Outlook Express cannot be installed on Win7, what this person hears is a list view mistakenly classified as "OUtlook express message list", must be somewhere in the JAWS scripts. I get that too when I arrow up and down my messages, but not regularly and I cannot even reproduce it.
I just learnt to ignore it.
Regards,

Nermin

Jimmy,

Sounds like having Outlook Express on that machine is confusing things. It
needs to be removed, since it does not run on Windows 7 (or so I've been
told).

Good afternoon,

I am trying to help someone with WLM. She has been reading her mail with
JAWS 12 but today although WLM shows the message list it doesn't read the
message when it is opened.

I noticed that when she opens WLM JAWS says something about outlook Express.
She tells me she had programs from her old computer transferred to her new
window seven, but that was some time ago.

Thanks for any help you can provide.

Jimmy

interesting response, do you know if dan clark is sighted or not? re Eric,
it took a bright young man named wil pearson to solve atough question, or
rather I should say explain why eric's suggestions could not work, and
another person named Bryan carver director of technical support say why it
would not and could notb e fixed, but it took a long time to get any answer,
a director called Lee Hamilton listened to me ran tests and in the end
Bryan carver telephoned me so do not be afraid to go to the top, mind you it
took persistance, and you will not be popular for doing it thanks dorothy!
, and you may not be populare

Sincerely:

Dave Durber

Thanks Dave. Yeah, may as well go right to the top. :)

Just curious, is he blind and an actual user of the product? That always
helps too.
