Re: Ideas for handling color coded spreadsheets
David Goldfield
Jonathan, you raise a valid concern regarding using color coding
to convey status. This not only presents challenges to screen
reader users but it's totally unhelpful for someone who may not
require a screen reader or enlarger but who may be color-blind. In
this case, placing text in a certain color to convey status is
useless and should be avoided. David Goldfield, Blindness Assistive Technology Specialist JAWS Certified, 2019 WWW.DavidGoldfield.org On 2/14/2020 12:54 PM, Cohn, Jonathan

Why would one use the annual nonsense then? No upgrade with version type, i.e: home vs. pro? Odd, but then anymore, with this company... oh, I’ll hold that thought lol

Well, using that logic, you receive an email from JAWS every year reminding you that your SMA is expiring, or a unexpected charge on your credit card every year. As apposed to one charge every 2 years that is cheaper in the long run. Of course if you don’t have to pay for it, the cost is irrelevant. Swing for the fences and you may hit a home run out of the park.

I’m not sure so don’t quote me on this. I think in the long run it is cheaper to buy 2 updates for JAWS, rather then paying $90 per year. I think the cost for 2 updates is $160.
From: main@jfw.groups.io <main@jfw.groups.io> On Behalf Of Sieghard Weitzel
That depends on how far behind you are. If you are on Jaws 2019 and just didn’t have an SMA to upgrade to Jaws 2020 you should be able to buy a new SMA at whatever the price is and it will give you Jaws 2020 and Jaws 2021 this fall. If you are still on Jaws 2018 you should be able to buy a new SMA and this would entitle you to upgrade to Jaws 2019 and Jaws 2020, of course there is no need to actually install Jaws 2019, you would go straight to Jaws 2020, but at that point your SMA is once again used up and if you want Jaws 2021 this fall you would need to buy another SMA either right away or at the latest by October. If you are on anything prior to Jaws 2018 like Jaws 18 or even 17, you would have to immediately buy 2 SMA’s to even get Jaws 2020. Alternatively, if you live in the US you can switch to the Jaws subscription model which is I believe $90 a year, this would entitle you to upgrade right away to Jaws 2020 no matter what version you are on, then you continue to pay $90 each year and this will always entitle you to install and use the latest update.
Having said all this I would highly recommend you speak to Vispero directly at 1-727-803-8600, let them look up your account via the Jaws serial number you have and ask what your options are. They do also have a toll free number, but I don’t currently have it handy.

I would buy the SMA if you are not too far behind.
The annual license is fine for the year but if at the end of the year you don't
have $90 then your software becomes a 40 minute demo. Call Freedom Scientific or
go to the web site and put in your serial number and it should tell you the cost
to upgrade.

Research with a web search engine is so important
to people, and especially us who otherwise have no access to print.
I wonder things all the time, and I am always doing
searches.
I'll be watching TV for example, and I get a
thought from something I am watching, and I do a search.
Also, I maintain that it is next to impossible to
do your own software repair without another computer in the home, because if one
can't get on-line with one computer, for whatever reason, you can use the other
one to research what might be wrong with the one that isn't
working.
I can't imagine having my home page being anything
other than my particular search engine.
Also, a good subject line to a list like this
one, is a reflection of what one would do a web search for an
answer.
I think many people don't bother to learn the
basics of using a web page, even for simple web searches.
I have found that sometimes I have a hard time
coming up with the best terms to use in my searches, and I find that as I read
the closest results that I found, I can refine my search terms to get even
better results.
That is why the Surf's Up link on the FS Jaws
training page would help take the fear of using web pages away.

That may indeed be correct, but it is not fair if
true.
If someone decides to live without the latest and
greatest for a year, they should be able to get a new jaws for the same price as
a new user.
So if they changed their name and address, they can
get it for less?
That's wrong.

Also, when you Google something, or web search
something to be more precise, the answers you get will be from a list archive,
just like this one.
So if it hasn't been asked yet, and gets properly
answered, the answer will be found from a web search in the future.
That is why subject lines are so important, like
this one, is a pretty good subject line, I think Home page in Chrome would have
been a bit better, and therefore easier found with a web search.

Re: Ideas for handling color coded spreadsheets
Cohn, Jonathan
Hello,
Since colors are being based on status, I think it would be a good idea to add a column for this status and then have an excel color filter that adjusts the color based on this field. This could make it easier for you to filter, and also provides support for color blind individuals. The column could be hidden by default if it bothers the aesthetics of the owner. I was also wondering if the JAWS skim reading utility works within Excel, while it is generally used to search for paragraphs with a specific word and then read the beginning of the paragraph or similar type functions, I am fairly confident it has a way to detect colors also. I have only tried using it on web sites and word processing documents. Great question: Jonathan
