I don't use Edge, but with some other Microsoft products, I have seen this behavior and it would get cleared when refreshing the JAWS scripting library with insert-control-Escape. Hopefully this will work for you. Jonathan

Has anyone noticed that JAWS does not ativate links and buttons on some pages? I have had to use JAWS plus F7 to get the links to respond. Â Any ideas?

Re: latest Jaws and emails reading as tables
Tom,
You have to be very specific in how you search for this item, as follows:
Â
Open an email message in Outlook and place focus in it. The “Layout table” item won’t appear otherwise.
Press JAWS key+v.
An edit field appears.
Type the six letters t a b l e s.
Now press enter.
Arrow down until JAWS verbalizes “Layout table, ignore.”
Once there, press the spacebar to cycle between checked or unchecked. You want the item checked.
Â
I hope it makes a difference on your system. Sadly, it hasn’t on mine.

First off verify that you have "layout" tables ignored  in your JAWS quick settings.  Also, there is aa Outlook function to "View in Browser", this used to be in the ribbon, but it seems to be hidden these days, and if
activated warns you that the Browser is has a different security configuration from Outlook. You can add it into the Quick Access Bar if you think it would be useful.
Hopefully one of these will help,

Depends on if it works the way it is set by default. It can appear in the system tray, and right-clicking (or equivalent) will let you choose which sound device to apply it to, the default choice is the default.

msi files for personal websettings are cleared automatically
Hello, I use the custom labels very often on websites so I had some .msi-files with a size of about 37kb. Â This morning, without any warning I think, some msi-files where overwritten with a empty msi-file. So, all the custom labels are lost. Since the files are not in the trash on my system, I think jaws did a overwrite. Â How can I prevent this from happening in the future: Â e.g. Is there a maximum size allowed? Can i find somewhere any logs about this to inform freedom scientific / vispero? Â Â Thx for any hints. Â Kind regards, William Windels

Re: Logon, logoff and shutdown sound for Windows 10
Since I first got Jaws in 98, Jaws 2.0, There has been within the program, the ability to set up in Jaws properties, to set up a short cut key. One can set up an alternative screen reader, to get one on the desk top.  As was said in the post below. Then, turn it off. Once Jaws begins working. That way, should Jaws not work, for some reason. One can get it up and working once more. Using the alternative screen reader. Which is why, I don’t agree with the idea the alternate screen reader ought be set up to close. Once the desk top shows itself.   Sent from Mail for Windows 10 Â

If you set up a keyboard shortcut like Control + Shift + J it works just fine and both in Jaws 2019 and 2020 Jaws Key + F4 shuts Jaws down immediately if you tell it in Settings not to prompt you to exit Jaws. The one true statement is that Narrator starts faster, but if you know Jaws takes a few seconds it's not a big deal. Lastly, George's suggestion did not suggest that you can't still start Narrator with Control + Windows + Enter, the way I understand it is simply that he recommends instead of telling Jaws to speak at the logon screen to set up Narrator to do this, but then to configure Narrator not to run automatically after the desktop loads but to let Jaws take over again.  -----Original Message----- From: main@jfw.groups.io <main@jfw.groups.io> On Behalf Of JM Casey Sent: Wednesday, January 8, 2020 1:03 PM To: main@jfw.groups.io Subject: Re: Logon, logoff and shutdown sound for Windows 10  Sure; even going back as far as Windows 98 sometimes you would hear a shutdown sound but the PC still would not shut down. The sound is just one thing in a series of tasks executed when one performs a shutdown. And it's never going to be one of the last tasks executed, because shutting down background programmes like the stuff that makes your sound device work is also part of the sequence. So a shutdown sound guarantees ... not much, really, just that the specific operation designated "play shutdown sound" has executed.  -----Original Message----- From: main@jfw.groups.io <main@jfw.groups.io> On Behalf Of Sieghard Weitzel Sent: January 8, 2020 11:17 AM To: main@jfw.groups.io Subject: Re: Logon, logoff and shutdown sound for Windows 10  And even in Windows 7 I had situations where the shut-down sound played and then one of my sighted employees or my wife said the computer had not powered down because of some message which Jaws didn't read any more. Tom,
Â
I notice that no one has responded to your post. My system is the same as yours except I’m using Outlook 2016, not 2013, and thunderbird. However, I am having the same problem. I don’t
have a solution; only workarounds.
Â
I get table announcements inconsistently. Sometimes a table-formatted message opens and reads fine, other times I have your problem. The fastest way for me to read a problem message is
to select all with control-a, then copy with control-c, and then paste with control-v into Notepad. I use Notepad for this purpose because it opens instantaneously.
Â
Obviously, I can’t click on any links in the email when the content is in Notepad. If I want to click a link, I go back to the message and tab until that link is spoken.
Â
An alternative is to close the message and reopen it. sometimes JAWS then reads it just fine.
Â
The third method is to close JAWS and reload it. This method always makes the message readable, but it doesn’t keep working for other messages afterwards.
Â
Again, I know this isn’t ideal. Anyone having this problem should write to Vispero to get it fixed. Tom and I can’t be the only JAWS users experiencing it.

               Hi,

Using latest W10 64bit and Jaws 2020,Outlook 2013 and latest Thunderbird.
Â
I am having a problem which is driving me nuts when reading or arrowing down through a message. Jaws will say something likeÂ
table with 1 columns and 1 rows nesting level 3
While the table size and nesting level may change, the level of annoyance does not.
Â
This problem has only been noticed since updating to the latest version of Jaws.
Â
Can someone please explain how to change Jaw's behaviour when reading emails?
Â
Thanks

Hi, Right, I'm fully aware and 100% ok with the fact that the elbraille only has a braille keyboard. I know braille. The hardest part for me personally, will be learning the braille commands. However, this task shouldn't be that difficult because I'm a very quick learner. I also love to learn how to use my assistive tech, and for the most part, am self-taught, with help from user guides, and mailing lists, when necessary.

I must say that for what you are getting, and from what I have seen it is a bit pricy and you could get a netbook computer with an SSD drive and a 13 inch width and spend your money in finding the Focus 14 or 40 to be a much more price saver.

If someone was in the market for a braille note taker, the idea is that you have an integrated unit, braille display and ElBraille unit which runs the Windows Operating System. So you could run Office 365, 2019, 2016 or 2013. Many have Jaws already, so one does not have to buy Jaws again. Hi, Jaws and the focus and elbraille user's manual all have a fantastic list of commands and their descriptions. What I did for the longest time is make a cheat sheet in notepad with the most important (to me) commands listed. Then used it exclusively for 2-3 weeks. Now, I might forget one or two, but everything is just in the back of my brain. Like what someone says about training wheels - I can go months and be right back at it.

Hello All: There is something that has not been mentioned here regarding the El Braille. It has nice features, fast and powerful but comparing it with a laptop the El Braille does not have a QWERTY keyboard. Everything is run from the keyboard of the Focus 14 or 40 braille display.
I must say that for what you are getting, and from what I have seen it is a bit pricy and you could get a netbook computer with an SSD drive and a 13 inch width and spend your money in finding the Focus 14 or 40 to be a much more price saver.
Also, I was told that doing windows update is not going to be the same as getting a comercially baught computer as there are some proprietary that Freedom Scientific and the manufacturer of the El Braille in Russa have done.
If I'm wrong on these things, I hope someone will varify them so that people don't plop a lot of money down a black hole and end up with something that gets outdated quickly as the technology is changing too fast.

Hi, I have a pc and braillenote touch+. Sometimes, I'm in invironments where hearing jaws, with speech alone is difficult, if not impossible. Also, my laptop, being a 15-inch is quite huge and heavy, when placed in a backpack. If I were to get an elbraille, like I'm seriously thinking of doing, that would become my main machine, and I'd use the laptop at home, or for things the elbraille can't handle. Thanks, Jessica

This is most likely because EMMC storage is a slightly lower end solid state drive than is probably in your laptop and / or desktop. From what I am able to gather, that 128 gb Data drive is essentially a full size sd card that they have connected internally, but I might be wrong. You can move apps such as office 365 and OneDrive over to that in settings, as well as install things like dropbox on there as well, so that the drive which contains windows (a size of 32 GB) isn't taken up by that and you have more storage to work with. The Braille lite and braille n speak product lines will always be close to my heart. They are what I grew up with and to this day their braille output remains one of their strong points. -----Original Message----- From: main@jfw.groups.io <main@jfw.groups.io> On Behalf Of Randy Meyer Sent: Wednesday, January 8, 2020 3:19 PM To: main@jfw.groups.io Subject: Re: Elbraille 40? Hi Randy, The elbraille 14 can be paired with Bluetooth to the gdp pocket. With a simple command, the unit can be switched from USB, which is how it communicate with the elbraille, to Bluetooth. Alternatively you could undo the USB connection from the docking station and connect it to the pocket. It's unfortunate that you have Bluetooth issues - I regularly use mine on my Android phone and switch back to the elbraille for other things. The docking station - essentially the part that is the windows computer - is slow, however is perfectly fine for general usage and as you said will give excellent batterylife compared with 99% of new laptops.

I have an ElBraille 14. I have found it to be slow. It was affordable, as I already had Jaws, bought a used focus 14 display, and paid some where around $1,000 for the docking station. I agree that the battery life is great.
I recently purchased a mini laptop, the GDP Pocket for around $350 and pared it with a used focus 40 display I picked up at a reasonable price. It is faster. I found I needed to connect the display by cord, because Bluetooth was unreliable. I like that it gives me the option to use the small keyboard on the computer instead of the Braille display keyboard. I only do this when something stumps me for the correct Braille keyboard command. The downside is far less battery life, especially because the Braille display draws from the computer's battery before using it's own. I would say my battery life runs somewhere between 4 and 6 hours, depending on use, where the ElBraille is probably triple that.
Purchasing the ElBraille did force me to learn all of the Braille keyboard commands, which gave me the confidence to purchase the GDP Pocket and try it with a Braille display. I can put the ElBraille 14 in a jacket pocket or even a pants pocket, where I can not do that with a GDP Pocket with a 40-cell display.
I still use both machines depending on the convenience factor and computer power needed.

It is fascinating to me that their web site does not give any prices for the 14 or 40 version of this low-end Windows machine combo and if one follows the link to the place to purchase either one, you find a 404 page not found error. I wouldn't be in the market anyway, but just curious. I personally would rather have a full fledged laptop and a braille display but I guess I can understand the appeal to some with the extended battery life they claim.
O well, I'll shut up now on this topic.

Hi Richard,
I'll be glad to try and answer your question with the understanding that I know far less than you. If someone was in the market for a braille note taker, the idea is that you have an integrated unit, braille display and ElBraille unit which runs the Windows Operating System. So you could run Office 365, 2019, 2016 or 2013. Many have Jaws already, so one does not have to buy Jaws again. For those who don't have a Jaws license, it will be more expensive, I don't know the price of the bundle for the unit, Focus 40 Five and Jaws. In my case, if I purchase the ElBraille 5, I only need the unit as I already have Jaws and the Focus 5 display. Hope this helps.

OK, could someone who knows far more than I explain what the point is with this new device from FS?
ElBraille 40 V combines the flexibility of a modern mainstream computer running the Windows® 10 operating system with JAWS® and a 40-cell Braille display with a full Braille keyboard to offer a fully accessible compact solution. (JAWS and Braille display sold separately.
I copied the above from their web site. What is the point if you have to buy the Focus 40 blue and Jaws separately? )

Hi, I completely, 100% understand that huge price jump. However 99% of what folks would do with a keyboard can be done on the braille display. Furthermore it has a USB port and Bluetooth so a QWERTY keyboard can be connected easily enough. The only time I have come across this is when playing audiogames. Regarding Windows updates, this is 100% false. Mine is running Windows 10 1909 quite happily and without issues. The Elbraille utilities are simply installed like any regular program. I will agree that it is expensive new, but there is also nothing on the market quite like it and I'd recommend it over the new braille note touch, which is entirely dependent on humanware to send out Android updates rather than Microsoft sending out updates to this machine just like all other Windows 10 computers. The problem with most notetakers is exactly that described below - obsolescence almost as soon as it is out the door. With this machine, there is no fear of that happening for years to come - it is a regular Windows 10 computer with none of the proprietary software that usually overlays others, like the braille note touch. NVDA can be installed without issue, just as an example, as can many other apps and programs, just like a Windows 10 PC, with the braille display not only being used as the keyboard, but right below your fingertips. I'm from the Era of the power braille 40, where a nice solid mechanical style keyboard sat atop two Velcro strips and directly below this, in my case, were 40 cells of braille. Very not portable, but carrying two devices after experiencing that just seems counterintuitive. Yes, a *lot* cheaper, but if you use braille on a daily basis, perhaps worth that price, especially if this does exactly what you want. I'm not sure how I'd manage with a braille display having to sit under my 15 inch laptop when my lap is the only place to sit it down, though I'm sure I'm overthinking this.
Hope that helps.

> > -----Original Message----- > From: main@jfw.groups.io <main@jfw.groups.io> On Behalf Of Randy Meyer > Sent: Wednesday, January 8, 2020 1:38 PM > To: main@jfw.groups.io > Subject: Re: Elbraille 40? > > I have an ElBraille 14. > > Les > > -----Original Message----- > From: main@jfw.groups.io <main@jfw.groups.io> On Behalf Of Richard > Turner > Sent: Wednesday, January 8, 2020 8:33 AM > To: main@jfw.groups.io > Subject: Re: Elbraille 40? > > OK, could someone who knows far more than I explain what the point is with this new device from FS? > > ElBraille 40 V combines the flexibility of a modern mainstream computer running the Windows® 10 operating system with JAWS® and a 40-cell Braille display with a full Braille keyboard to offer a fully accessible compact solution. Re: Logon, logoff and shutdown sound for Windows 10
Sieghard Weitzel <sieghard@...>
And why can Jaws not be started with a single keystroke under Windows 10?

But adding it to Windows 10 as an elevated task as I described in my other email does work well and it's better than nothing. -----Original Message----- From: main@jfw.groups.io <main@jfw.groups.io> On Behalf Of Gerald Levy via Groups.Io Sent: Wednesday, January 8, 2020 3:38 AM To: main@jfw.groups.io Subject: Re: Logon, logoff and shutdown sound for Windows 10 Unfortunately, there is no shutdown sound in Windows 10. Hacking the registry to produce logoff or shutdown sounds is a bad idea, no matter what the other "experts" on this list may tell you to the contrary. The bottom line is that hacking the registry can often produce unwanted or unpredictable results. If you want to be sure that your computer has completely powered off after you initiate a shutdown, I suggest purchasing a small USB-powered cooling fan and connecting it to a front or rear panel USB port. When the computer powers off, the fan will stop spinning. Simple as that. Gerald On 1/8/2020 1:40 AM, Shankar C wrote: Hi bill, hope things are well at you. Yes, it works.
“System Exit” is the event associated with shutdown.
“Windows logoff” is associated with signing off to log on as a different user.

Hi Bill, I downloaded the file containing the scripts you mentioned and unzipped it. The unzip procedure creates three folders each containing 2 files.
What is the difference between “System Exit” and Windows logoff”?
Have you tried this technique and did it work?
Thanks Tom

Hi. I tried to send this message to the JAWS list before, but it hasn't shown up in the last 27 minutes, so I am sending it again, in hopes that it will get through this time.
In case someone cannot find this page on Ehow, I am including the link below that will download the zip file containing the registry edit scripts that will return the logon, logoff and system exit events back to the Sound settings without having to manually edit the registry.
