List Rules

When:
Wednesday, 1 January 2020
12:00am to 1:00am
(GMT-05:00) America/New York

Description:
The following is the current version of the JFW Mailing List policies. These are sent out monthly, and also available from:

http://groups.io/g/jfw/wiki/List-Policies

**List Policies**

1: Keep it clean. We're a family list, and there are people here who probably don't want to hear everything *exactly* that's running through your head. If you wouldn't see it on TV, it doesn't belong in a post to the list. If you're not sure, email the administration before you post it to the list. Otherwise, you stand to see your posts moderated.

2: Stay on topic. We're a JFW-oriented list. That said, anything related to JFW, its functionality with programs etc is acceptable. If it doesn't have to do with JFW, it doesn't belong on the list. This includes, but isn't limited to, talk of other screen readers such as Window Eyes.

3: Listen to, and respect, the wishes of the admins/moderators. If you're asked by an admin or moderator to drop a subject, or take something to private emails (in the instance of two people carrying on a thread list-wide), please do so. If the subject is changed on a thread by an admin or moderator, it will be explained why in the email sent out with it. Please don't continue replying to the old subject.

4: Don't ask over the list for a position on the list administration. If you'd like to help out, it's of course welcome, but address the request to do so to the admin team, otherwise it'll be ignored. Requests are always welcome, whether help is being looked for or not. When help is needed, a post will be made to the list. The requests already received will be kept in mind.

5: Keep flaming to a minimum. This is not limited to flaming of each other, but goes beyond that, to flaming of products, opinions, ideas, suggestions, etc. Constructive criticism never hurts. Flame wars, especially public ones, both drive people from this list and are unwelcome here. either take the problem to private emails, or report the problem to list administration.

6. Respect the opinions and views of others. This is *very* important in any environment, most especially an online environment where the only gage one has on a person is what that person puts to writing. If you come off as hostile in your posting, whether you intended to or not, people will take it as such. Online, "face value" means just that. People make mistakes, people don't always have access to the same information you do. For that matter, people don't always have the same experience you do. If you know how someone can solve their problem, great. Suggest it to them and/or the list. Do *not* proceed to tell someone, on or off list, that they have no business posting. Repeat offenders of this particular rule will be banned for a week to 30 days, depending on the severity. Serious problems will be banned permanently.

As always, if there are problems or questions with regards these policies, don't hesitate to send them off-list to jfw+owner@groups.io

James,
List Admin

Hi group,

I’m using Jaws 2020 with Thunderbird 68. When I arrow through messages
in my Drafts folder, Jaws keeps saying “alert this is a draft message.”
It repeats it so I can’t read all of the line I’m on. Anyone know how I
can stop Jaws from reading this alert?

Thanks,

Norma

moderated seeking web experiences

Dean Martineau <topdot@...>

As I prepare my next book, to be titled something like the Complete guide to Browsing the Web with JAWS, I continue looking for resources to enrich the book. this means learning of sites which are problematic for any reason, and sites where users have found different quick keys to be beneficial. It's hard for one person to find all these! In this regard, I have questions in case anybody would like to contribute experience:

1. Looking for sites where you have found the use of navigation by region to be useful, perhaps more effective than navigation by heading.

2. Sites where you have found the use of any of these quick keys to be useful: O, W, Y, z, dash or equal sign.

3. Sites where using S or D for same or different elements gets you where you need to go efficiently.

4. Sites with forms that you couldn't complete, or only completed with great difficulty.

5.  Sites where you could not read necessary tables.

Please write off-list to topdot@...

if you have thoughts or contributions.

Thanks for considering.

I guess this may depend a lot on how your email account is configured, e.g. POP3, IMAP, Exchange.

I’d just call Microsoft Accessibility and ask them to take a look and see if they can figure out why this is happening.

If you delete folders they go to Deleted items but you have to go into Deleted items, then press Control + Shift + Tab to go into your folder list, expand Deleted Items and when focused on one of the folders you deleted bring up the Context menu and select “Delete”, only then will they go away permanently.

Hi all,

hoping everyone’s Christmas and Hanukkah went well and your upcoming New Year will be as wonderful.

I am using Outlook 2019 with Jaws 2019.1912.1 with Windows 10. Windows updates current.

When I shut down my pc and boot it up either later that day or the next, I open Outlook to check emails. In the trash folder is other folders that I continuously delete. They reappear the following day when I turn my computer on. They just do not delete permanently for some odd reason.

Any ideas what to do to stop this madness?

Also, I’m curious to see what everyone’s thoughts are for the new Jaws 2020. I’ve not installed it yet due to so many troubles I’ve read about when first released. Let me know your thoughts and thanks again to you all.

I can press Jaws Key + F11 to bring up the system tray and press “T” to jump to that item and hear it read.

Of course I don’t usually do this because if I switch to German Eloquence speaks the letters I type in German.

well, pressing insert+h will display the commands for the program but
pressing insert+q is usually used to confirm if the default scripts are
being loaded instead of the scripts ment for the program.

I don't know anything about this program, but if the Jaws scripts are
loaded and are well done, isn't insert+h the command to bring up the
jaws keystrokes for the app you are in?
Or insert+w?

This is a wild guess.

firstly, the keystroke, shift+insert+r= reply privately to sender is a jaws keystroke.

no setting to be changed in outlook will solve your problem.

also, no setting in the .io platform will solve the issue.

this keystroke isn't 100% accurate.

have you restarted your machine?

the keystroke is working here for now.

If a message is open you can press Alt + 1 twice quickly and focus is placed in the “From” field.

Now you just have to press left arrow once and you are on the address of the person who posted the list.

In order to copy it you can either bring up the context menu, arrow down once to copy and press enter or you can press Shift + End to highlight the address and then use Control + C to copy it.

You can now press escape to close the message and press Reply if you want to reply to it but send it directly to the person, you then have to go to the To field, delete the list address and you can use then Control + V to paste in the sender’s address.

Of course you can also start a new message and paste the address into the To field right away.

I’ve found that keystroke to work inconsistently at best. With the message open, you can generally shift+tab through fields and find anc utilize the sender’s address.  It takes more work that way, unfortunately.

Could the issue be resulting from a general change in how groups.io lists function?

The answer to that is, "Yes."   It is impossible to fix what you don't know about, and most software makers have a mechanism in place such that prioritizing fixes that are not security related comes from the number of complaints about a given issue.

It is always worth filing a trouble ticket for just this reason.

Does anyone have a fix for this issue?

Could the issue be resulting from a general change in how groups.io lists function?

Or, do I maybe have to change a setting in my Outlook 2016 e-mail program?

Thanks for any thoughts.

Hello;

firstly, the keystroke, shift+insert+r= reply privately to sender is a jaws keystroke.

no setting to be changed in outlook will solve your problem.

also, no setting in the .io platform will solve the issue.

this keystroke isn't 100% accurate.

have you restarted your machine?

unloaded and reload jaws?

the keystroke is working here for now.

moderated Outlook 2019 delete issue

Rick Mladek

Hi all,

hoping everyone’s Christmas and Hanukkah went well and your upcoming New Year will be as wonderful.

Rick

Michelle's Home Emails

hi thank you for letting me know nothing came out in my email.

I have just purchased band in a box 2020 running with windows 10 64 bit and jaws 20190928
I have installed the scripts in jaws enu that I unzipped and placed the bbw.accessscheme in band in a box data folder.

I have set Biab as discribed in the scripts html notes.

having problems saving the scheme it keeps going back to defalt scheme.

where can I get podcasts from a blind person's point of view? which can I get jaws hotkeys relating to the program?

Many thanks.

I don't know if this will help, as I read/write all of my email on my iPhone. If I have the message completely open, not just the preview, I can go to the top of the page above the "to:" field and read the email address of the sender. Sometimes, the whole address doesn't show and I have to tap on it, then send from the box that pops up.

Also, at the bottom of all groups.io mail, is a line that says something like "reply to sender".
