Hi Dave,

To be totally honest, navigating the Waterfox menues with Jaws is a total pain in the A**!  You have to constantly toggle the virtual cursor on / off because if you tell the virtual cursor to stay turned off for all applications, it doesn't.  At least this is my experience.  When I want to change any settings in the Waterfox menues I use NVDA and it navigates the menues flawlessly.

I had to use 7Zip to open the EXE archives and extract the ISO images.

Hi,

Without sighted assistance, How can you be sure it did not boot?

Some computers need a USB sound card in order for you to hear NVDA

while running the Windows PE.

If this is the case, you can get one from WalMart for around $10.

Here's a download link:
https://od.lk/d/N18xNjQyNDQ5Mjdf/Win10PE_x86.ISO
It is a version of windows that loads into RAM and you can
even remove the
boot media after it starts.
With this you can do repairs or install Windows, get on-line
and even
listen

to audio.
It also has a network scanner in this version to help you get
on-line.
You just cannot install to it because it will be gone on next

Yes, no password can be bypassed by taking out a small piece.
I still would like to know about Windows passwords and if
they can really
be
discovered as easily as Glen and some others here say they can.
As for Apple, what was said is correct. This case was when
those two
people
shot and killed a bunch of people during this Christmas
party I think in
California and I think it was now 2 years ago or maybe even 3.
Apple said they can't get into the iPhone which, by the way,
was not as
secure as today's iPhones are, and I think the FBI hired
some Israeli
company who tried to get in, millions were spent and I
honestly can't
remember if they succeeded or not.
As for the Face Id thing and a thief pointing it at you that
is only
correct
to some degree. If somebody snatched your iPhone and stuck
around all you
would have to do is cover your Face with your hands if you
are worried.
At
the same time if a thief stuck around they could just as
easily grab your
hand and put your finger on the Touch Id home button or,
even better, ask
you for the passcode. If somebody is that callus I doubt a
lot of people
would keep their passcode to themselves after a few slaps or
punches or
being shoved to the ground and kicked a few times which some
such thieves
probably have few scruples to do.
The fact is that even if he can unlock your phone once with
Face Id, he
has
to make sure it doesn't lock and having unlocked it with
Face Id or Touch
Id
won't do them any good if they want to reset the phone to
sell it or even
if
they want to get into it and disable or change the Face
Id/Touch Id/PIN
option. As soon as you go to Settings > Passcode you have to
enter you
passcode. Apple security is indeed very good, even if your
phone was
stolen
and they have your PIN, you could wipe the phone and
permanently disable
it
if you quickly log into iCloud and Find My iPhone also
cannot be disabled
without the passcode, the only way to stop it from working
is to turn off
the phone.

Norma,

The solution for me is the JAWS refresh, or repaint, command, insert-escape. I've just been using this on a form, where I'm reminded that it sometimes causes JAWS to lose its place. However, it's the most reliable way I've found to read content I've typed into an edit field.

Some computers need a USB sound card in order for you to hear NVDA

If this is the case, you can get one from WalMart for around $10.

Id/Touch Id/PIN
option. As soon as you go to Settings > Passcode you have to
enter you
passcode. Apple security is indeed very good, even if your
phone was
stolen
and they have your PIN, you could wipe the phone and
permanently disable
it
if you quickly log into iCloud and Find My iPhone also
cannot be disabled
without the passcode, the only way to stop it from working
is to turn off
the phone.

Hi,
I tried a handful of off-line virus scanners today, and this one was the
only one to work with NVDA in WinPE.
This is a good way to scan for viruses, because your system is off-line when
booted to WinPE.
This a link to it in my Open Drive.
It's called MWAV.exe
https://od.lk/d/N18xNjU3MzkwNzdf/mwav.exe
There is an update you can tab to before running the scanner, it will update
its definitions.

Id/Touch Id/PIN
option. As soon as you go to Settings > Passcode you have to
enter you
passcode. Apple security is indeed very good, even if your
phone was
stolen
and they have your PIN, you could wipe the phone and
permanently disable
it
if you quickly log into iCloud and Find My iPhone also
cannot be disabled
without the passcode, the only way to stop it from working
is to turn off
the phone.

Hi,
I tried a handful of off-line virus scanners today, and this one was the
only one to work with NVDA in WinPE.
This is a good way to scan for viruses, because your system is off-line when
booted to WinPE.
This a link to it in my Open Drive.
It's called MWAV.exe

There is an update you can tab to before running the scanner, it will update

Some computers need a USB sound card in order for you to hear NVDA

while running the Windows PE.

If this is the case, you can get one from WalMart for around $10.

Here's a download link:

It is a version of windows that loads into RAM and you can
even remove the
boot media after it starts.
With this you can do repairs or install Windows, get on-line
and even
listen

to audio.
It also has a network scanner in this version to help you get
on-line.
You just cannot install to it because it will be gone on next
boot-up.

Anyway like I said in a previous message, it uses the same chip as the Echo speech synth. Yes, it sounds different, but that’s because of how the chip is programmed. You could make some of the echos sound like this too but it usually took more tweaking and effort than it was worth.

. Limp Bizkit's arrangement is notable for featuring a Speak & Spell during the bridge.[10] This, together with a new verse and an extra chorus, replaces the rock theme of The Who's version.

For those who do not know what a Speak and Spell is, it was a hand-held device made in the late 1970's by Texas Instruments as an educational tool. I had bought one for my Great Niece.

There is a good article on Texas Instruments and the speak and spell on Wikipedia as well.

Not sure of course as it has been a long time since I used the hardware synth.

Hi,

I know that some of you really know all the synthesizers, and there is this synthesizer used in a Limp Bizkit song, it spells out limp.

I would like to know the name of the synth used.

I think it sounds like the one in the movie War Games but I'm not sure.

The link will download the song.

The offline scan uses no internet connection whatsoever - hence the name:  offline.

No disagreement about it being good to have as many metaphorical arrows in one's quiver as one can.  It gives you options.

Hi group,

Jaws 2019 with Inventoria by NCH Software. After I have inserted text into
an edit field, if I tab back to that field the text is not automatically
spoken by Jaws. The only way I can read the text is to use a standard
reading command like Insert num pad 2 or control left or right arrow key.
I'm using beginner verbosity, but I suspect I need to change something in
Jaws settings. If anyone can help out, I would appreciate it muchly.

Thanks,
Norma

Stephen Hawking's synth was Perfect Paul, which was either Decktalk or Double Talk, but I suspect DekTalk.
There was a really good interview with the daughter of the synth inventor and Stephen HawkingS daughter on the BBC in context of doing a history on the synth this morning, which I think was a rebroadcast.

I guess at one time the folks who assisted Stephen Hawking with his synthesizer told him that they could put in a more human sounding one and he declined, and they worked hard to find the Dectalks to keep his going.  The only thing he did not like about it was the American accent.

The song “Keep Talking” has samples of Steven hawking speaking through his synth. Don’t really know what it is but, it sounds rather like a Dectalk to me, with some slightly different inflection.

Doesn’t Pink Floyd use a synth in one of their songs?

Venom’s album Cast in Stone also used a sample of the speak and spell saying “I win”. I laughed when I recognised that.

Anyway like I said in a previous message, it uses the same chip as the Echo speech synth. Yes, it sounds different, but that’s because of how the chip is programmed. You could make some of the echos sound like this too but it usually took more tweaking and effort than it was worth.

Unless you are having an Internet connectivity issue, which sometimes happens with computer infections.
These are good tools to have ready to use at home.
I have a packed computer and it took two hours, I think an on-line scan would take a lot longer.
Although I only use Microsoft Security Essentials I think it doesn't hurt to have a third-party scanner check as well.
One can do Microsoft's scan as well, before going to bed, but as I mentioned, one needs more than one tool available.
Just like we can't expect to repair a computer if we only have one at home, you need to be able to download tools and get information from web searches if one isn't working.

If one is using Windows 10 (and probably Windows 8.1, but I don't have that handy to check) one can schedule an offline scan with Windows Security to be executed on the next restart.

I own an HP and was able to go to 1909.  As so many models there may indeed be a driver problem for some but overall HP should not have a problem with 1909.
