When I restart my PC, Jaws starts and then the first thing I hear is "lost focus." Impressive.I'm currently using 2019 but this goes back at least a couple versions. Also bad focus problems using Firefox and at least one other browser, I don't recall which one. I have to set place markers or use the find command to get back to where I need to be. All the new features are nice, but I'd prefer Jaws just do the basic things with reliability.

I would think that a common element, if it is not just Jaws, could be in settings, like the particular desktop chosen or maybe the display driver in use, but it is a Jaws issue not working in certain situations.

I haven't been following this too closely, but I've never had the problem.
One possible common denominator here may be the use of outlook. I've
never used it, and very seldom used any other MS email client, and have
never had the problem. Maybe that is a clue.

Well, the idea is interesting and, in response to Randy or someone else who posted on this topic, I started writing a list of the stuff I have on here.
But if not a wiki, or something along a similar concept, what do you suggest?
I mean, the whole point would be that users could contribute, no? otherwise, the project wouldn't really get off the ground -- it would just be one or two guys' opinions on what programmes work well on their homepage, and, as you say, "who wants that?" :P

I was participating in a group discussion (a few years ago) and we decided to create a wiki page with alot of information about our discussions but hardly anyone wanted to spend the time to contribute to the wiki. plus, using a wiki where members can post inaccurate information about a program or procedure, and who wants that.

I agree that a short description would be helpful.

Also eventually a download link or advice on how to get the application would also be helpful I think,.

Someone suggested that a Wiki page may be available to this list which may host this information.

I don’t know if anybody knows if this is true and whether or how we could use it for such a purpose.

You can simply arrow down to review then all.

Here you can press enter to run the app or perhaps more usefully use the context key to create a shortcut .

For our purposes here you simply have to cursor down the list of aps, after about 10 apps open the Jaws speech history with insert space , then H and you should see the list of apps you have arrowed down in a form that you can copy and paste into a notepad file by pressing control a and then control c.

Alt tab back to your apps folder and continue cursoring down for about
10 app, open speech history history again and copy the resulting apps into your notepad file.

Continue until you have a file list of all the apps on your system.

As I say someone else might have a more elegant solution.

In any case edit the Notepad file to delete all the apps you know don’t work with Jaws.

Also you should probably delete any app that you don’t know if they work with Jaws or if you don’t want anybody else to know you have this app on your system.

I’ll try and do this as a starter list and others can then add or criticise the resulting list I have.

We need an Apple Vis type website with category lists of programs and Microsoft Store Apps Which are confirmed to work with Jaws.

As a workaround have you tried separate World Clock applications or Website?

For example

https://greenwichmeantime.com/timepiece/world-clock/

Once you have set a website like this up to your desired time zone you can set it up as a shortcut on your desktop or even, with a bit of further fiddling and editing of the shortcut, put it on the windows 10 Taskbar. Let me know if you want instructions on this.

In terms of apps rather than websites I think you will need to search for World Clock apps rather than clock apps as normal clock applications will just provide the standard feedback from the system time.

You probably cannot do it with the JAWS F12 keystroke to check time, but if both clocks appear on your System tray in the bottom right of your screen, then you can try using Windows key B to get to the system tray, then arrowing left or right to hear the clocks. I usually find focus is at the far left of the icons in the system tray, so it is fastest to arrow left and focus will quickly circle around to the far right of the icons where the standard system clock is.

I agree there should be a central repository (website) where members or
non members who are blind or visually impaired could read about a
program and save it to their computer if they want to use a copy, but I
disagree it should be connected to a wiki page. I was participating in a
group discussion (a few years ago) and we decided to create a wiki page
with alot of information about our discussions but hardly anyone wanted
to spend the time to contribute to the wiki. plus, using a wiki where
members can post inaccurate information about a program or procedure,
and who wants that.

I have saved your additions and will create a master list.

I agree that a short description would be helpful.

Also eventually a download link or advice on how to get the application
would also be helpful I think,.

Someone suggested that a Wiki page may be available to this list which
may host this information.

I don’t know if  anybody knows if this is true and whether  or how we
could  use it for such a purpose.

Thanks again

I followed my own advice and reproduce the list of programs on my system
that I have used at least once or twice with Jaws  can think is
accessible. Some programs I have used more than others. I have used
MP3Direct cut hundreds of times but Audacity less so if people want any
clarification of the programs I use then the amount of feedback I will
be able to give  will vary.

By the way in creating the application folder tip I gave earlier I

Anyway here we go as a start list.

*Subject: *Resource for Jaws Accessible Programs

I changed the subject line to reflect the new discussion.

As a starting point on this list it would be useful if people could list
the programs they know work well on their system with Jaws.

I can offer one tip  to make it easier to establish which app people
have on their system. Someone might have a better idea.

If you type or copy and paste the following command into the windows R
run dialogue,

shell:AppsFolder command

and press enter

This will open a list view with  all the apps you have on your system.

You can simply arrow down to review then all.

Here you can press enter to run the app or perhaps more usefully use the
context key to create a shortcut .

For our purposes here you simply have to cursor down the list of aps,
after about 10 apps open the Jaws speech history with insert space ,
then H and you should see the list  of apps you have arrowed down in a
form that you can copy and paste into a notepad file by pressing control
a and then control c.

Alt tab back to your apps folder and continue cursoring down for about
10 app, open speech history history again and copy the resulting apps
into your notepad file.

Continue until you have a file list of all the apps on your system.

As I say someone else might have a more elegant solution.

In any case edit the Notepad file to delete all the apps you know don’t
work with Jaws.

Also you should probably delete any app that you don’t know if they work
with Jaws or if you don’t want anybody else to know you have this app on
your system.

I’ll try and do this as a starter list and others can then add or
criticise the resulting list I have.

Yes David, even I was delighted to find that JAWS works on this as it
didn’t work on other apps I tried.

As for having a resource which could provide us with the list of JAWS
accessible program, I think it will be immensely useful. Perhaps we can
put the programs/Apps names in an excel and share it. May be we can give
it versions so if any one wishes to add any list of programs or apps
names, they can add these to the existing list and save it to the next
version and share it in this group.

Perhaps it would work at least for the interim untill such a resource is
available through Vispero.

Thanks

Very glad it worked– I did see this option on the Microsoft Store  but I
was not sure you would be able to use it.  I am especially pleased it is
accessible with Jaws. Not all apps are though I think the situation is
improving.

We need an Apple Vis type website with category lists of programs and
Microsoft Store Apps Which are confirmed  to work with Jaws.

There is something  called NVDA Road tested Programs on Accessibility
Net which is pretty much guaranteed to provide options for Jaws as well
but somethings are accessible with Jaws and not NVDA and vice versa.

There used to be a Programs page on the old Jaws User Mailing list
website but this seems defunct now and will not load here.  Tom
Lorimore’s White Stick website will not be update given his recent sad
death. I don’t know if anybody else knows of a similar resource?

VFO Should really host this  for the community I guess but if anybody
has a web page that could be used I would be happy to provide some
program suggestions and comments.

I realised that there had been thread drift away from the actual focus issue so I have resubmitted my post with an amended subject. See below.

I bought a mechanical "gamers" keyboard from Amazon and it is one of my best ever purchases. Apparently it has various LED lights on it which I cannot see but apart from that it feels just an old fashioned big ergonomic beast which has large, noisy clickable keys, spaced out numpad and 6 pack, plus functions keys in blocks of4 keys which makes identifying them easy. The only tactile dots I have added my self is on the 5 and the 0 keys on the number row.

I have mechanical keyboards at work and this Alt key thing is never an issue any more for me.
I happens occasionally on my Logitech K780 which I use at home, but I would say it's once a month or even less often.
This is with Jaws 2020 now although I don't recall it being worse in 2019. The losing focus issue happens a bit more often, but it certainly sounds like some people experience this a lot more often as well, I can typically Alt Tab between a bunch of open applications without any problems. Sometimes if I close an application I do lose focus and then pressing either Windows + M to minimize to the desktop works or pressing Alt Tab to go to another open application.

I am so pleased you have mentioned this as I was going to buy a new keyboard, thinking that my keyboard might be at fault.
Almost everytime I use a combination of keys like alt/tab or windows key/d to get to the desktop, the computer behaves as though the alt or windows key is still depressed - it isn't, but that is how it behaves. In fact it happens for that little group of three keys, alt, windows key and the control key, but it is the alt which is particularly nuisancesome.

Hi Maria/all,
If I get a strange effect on such situations, I turn speech on which I usually have on demand, and if alt appears pressed, I press it again. The problem often vanishes, but it has become really annoying too. Still with j2019. Take care, Takis

I ask, does anyone have the problem that when they switch from or close
an app, they get the alt key in combination with any other key pressed,
i.e. alt down arrow, alt tab, etc. That's what I get a very annoying
lot now. To get rid of it I have to fiddle with going to desktop then
back to the app I was working with.

I think Outlook could be the problem.
I use Outlook here at work. When working in other applications like
Excel or Chrome, when a message comes into Outlook I get disrupted by
losing speech or focus of the Window or within the Window.

Hi, yes, when I am on the internet, firefox loses ability to speak until I go out and then back into the browser/website... I do not believe this is outlook for I often do not have problems but from time to time, focus is lost in outlook while reading a message or going through a folder seeking a specific saved message or on any other browser as chrome or Internet Explorer, not just Firefox. I have had focus lost with crm programs as goldmine, as well...

This problem has become markedly worse in Windows 10. As I understand it, there is now a different method used to update the screen than in previous versions. JAWS hasn't kept up. In a few of my most-used apps, Alt-Tab does not bring focus back; I use JAWS Cursor and a simulated mouse-click to regain focus... sometimes.

I think Outlook could be the problem.
I use Outlook here at work. When working in other applications like Excel or Chrome, when a message comes into Outlook I get disrupted by losing speech or focus of the Window or within the Window.

moderated smarterpod chrome extention with jaws 2020?

Jessica D

Hi,

I love podcasts, and am on the hunt for a good cross-platform app/program.

Ideally, the program should:

  1. Be cross-platform between IOS, android, windows, and Alexa.
  2. Accessible with screen-readers on all listed platforms
  3. If a computer program doesn’t exist, a good web player or chrome extension would be good.
  4.
  5. I found an extension for chrome,  but can’t make it work with jaws.
  6. Its called, “smarterpod.

Can anyone help?

Thanks,

Jessica

When I have an alt key sticking problem, it seems that restarting Jaws will fix it, thus confirming that it is not the keyboard.

I am so pleased you have mentioned this as I was going to buy a new
keyboard, thinking that my keyboard might be at fault.
Almost everytime I use a combination of keys like alt/tab or windows key/d
to get to the desktop, the computer behaves as though the alt or windows key
is still depressed - it isn't, but that is how it behaves. In fact it
happens for that little group of three keys, alt, windows key and the
control key, but it is the alt which is particularly nuisancesome.
