Spell Checking and HJ Pad
David Griffith
Dear List I think many people forget that for over a decade now there has been a basic word processor provided with Jaws called HJ Pad. On my system it is located in C:\Program Files\Freedom Scientific\JAWS\2020\HJPAD.EXE This is potentially a very useful utility. However it is unfortunately showing its age and takes a few seconds to load on my machine, normally after windows reporting a not responding message which then disappears. This utility badly needs updating in other areas also but remains useful. Whilst this is by no means a fully fledge Word Processor in the style of Word many Word shortcuts work here. For example control H will bring up the replace dialogue with options for replace all etc. It also provide basic formatting with, if you need it bold, underline italics etc . You will need however to use Jaws key plus F to confirm format information changes.
However I think the most valuable aspect to this little word processing utility lays not in format control but it extremely easy and accessible Spell checking functionality.
I find spellchecking in Word office subscription version increasingly un-intuitive. I can sort of use it but sometimes it appears to inexplicably miss obvious spelling errors. This is probably my user error but I never had problems with spell checking in earlier versions of Word and I do get a little lost amongst the mass of Grammar options Word now provides.
As result I am a little untrusting of Word, , especially for blog posting.
For quick and dirty checking of Blog posts HJPad is an option. The Spell Checker is not modern, a little limited in vocabulary and any attempt to add a word to a User Dictionary results in an error message. Nevertheless the Spell Checker is like stepping back in time to the easy early Word Spell Checking dialogues and for quick blog checking is I think, still a useful free tool for Jaws Users. I wish FS would devote just a little effort to update this utility as I am sure others would find it really useful with a little tweaking. With a slightly improved dictionary, and the repair of the broken ability to add words to a User dictionary it would really come in useful. Also a basic script so that Jaws announces bold on and off as control b and other formatting changes are made would also update this utility mightily. If FS really cannot devote any time to updating this utility then perhaps they could make it open source and freeware so that the VIP programming community could take this little product forward and develop it to the benefit of screen reading users everywhere. It could then rise from obscurity to have a new life to assist many of us. David Griffith

Hi,
I currently don't have it installed on this
installation of Windows, but I recall that I may have had to route the jaws
cursor to a lower part of the screen to gather more information on something,
like the name and mac address to be sure that it was located.
It's been over a year since I used it on this
computer, and I reinstalled windows since then.

Hi again
I apologize for my late reply. Now I have tried to install N MAP on my computer. When i after that open "Nmap - Zenmap GUI", I only can find a window with not accessible information for JAWS. So how do you use N MAP with JAWS, and how can I via the program find IP-adresses etc. on my connected devices? Thanks in advance. Regards, Anders

Re: websites appearing strangely
James English
Hi,

If it helps, I am using windows 10 with an I7 machine and jaws 2018. The problem isn't that messenger (which is part of facebook) has randomly changed, it's that it keeps reverting to this odd state every 6 weeks or so, and always on a particular random one of my browsers. This time it is my (unextended) version of chrome, sometimes it is internet explorer, sometimes it is firefox. The other browsers, aside from the one it has decided to wrk strangely with, are fine; also it is important to note that whenever it is working strangely, other websites such as the online game politicsandwar.com also act strangely. Re-installing whichever browser, doing a complete scan and deleting all internet files fails to solve this strange issue for me.

Hm. I have that, and it does work, but I didn't think it had access to that manny formats. It seems a lot of people convert to wav and then use another pgoramme to convert to their compressed format of choice. But I know there are a few different versions of Pontes out there as well.

So, it's hard to know if you are experiencing anything specifically oriented toward your computer and setup with the description you have given. I am not familiar with messenger.com -- is it affiliated with facebook in some way?
toggle quoted messageShow quoted text
If so -- Facebook is constantly tweaking and messing with their interface, and they aren't the only ones. Since we use these "free" services, we are basically used as testers for the various things they want to try. This sometimes mean that yes, things disappear, appear in strange places, or not as we would expect or maybe even want.

This happens on the odd occasion, lasts about 2 weeks and then sorts itself out on its own: obviously I'd prefer if there was a way of sorting it out a lot faster from my end. It is browser independent though only appears to affect one browser at a time )IE or Chrome), occurs with both jaws and nvda, and is highly annoying. The best example I can give is with messenger.com, wherein various things (such as the search box) will disappear, and the conversation headings will be replaced with blank lines. Any help in this matter would be appreciated, - James

Re: JAWS and Plex Media Server
Tyler Wood
Hi, I’d just like to throw a few things out there to clear the waters. Note that I literally got into Plex a few days ago. You do not need a plex pass to listen to media on a mobile device. A one time fee of $4.99 will unlock it for that and future devices – this goes for the app store and google play store. I’m not sure what said friend was doing, but it all depends on your upload speed. Obviously if you’re trying to sync a huge movie using your own internet connection it might not be as fast as copying it to one drive. How are folks using plex on Windows with jaws? How do you find the experience? I should add here that I know you don’t need to pay anything if you’re going from computer to computer – and plex pass is far more than just letting you listen to your own content. It includes a streaming service similar to Netflix, hence the monthly $4.99. This is also clearly spelled out in the support articles. I’m currently using it with Sonos (the music part) and for my needs it is working quite well. Your mileage may vary, of course, and it all depends on your needs, but I struggle to find something that is as open as this as far as streaming your own media from your home computer to just about any device on the planet that doesn’t involve some ridiculously complex setup. This seems to be a lot of set it and forget it, and the plex server software is web based and very useable with Jaws.

Tony,
I'll describe how I do it with Word 1010 on my desktop computer running Windows 7. Your results may vary depending on your version of Wofd.
1. Open the applicable docx file with the label. I normally save mailing label files which only contain the address to be printed. 2. I press alt + M to place focus on the top ribbon bar and right arrow until Mailings has focus then I down arrow to move to the lower ribbon bar. 3. I right arrow until I hear Labels and press the enter key. 4. A mailing label dialog opens with the address from the docx file already listed and highlighted in the address section of the dialog. 5. Alt + F selects the radio button to print a full page of the same label and alt + N selects the radio button to print a single label. 6. Tab once to move to the spin box to select the row of labels on which the single label is located and tab once again to move to the spinner box to select the column to select the appropriate column. 7. Press alt + O to open the dialog where you can select the label model and type. 8. After all settings are selected, press alt + P to print the label.

How do I tell Word which position to print a label. The times I have tried it arrowing down or right did not always go to the position I intended.

Tony,
If I'm understanding your question, I don't have any great workarounds for identifying which labels are left on a sheet of Avery 5160 which contain 10 rows of 3 labels per row as I mentioned in my first post. I can sort of feel by touch which labels have been used so I can properly identify the row and column of the next unused label when printing individual labels. Also, when I've moved down a sheet so that the only ones left are the bottom two rows, I can flip the sheet over so that those two remaining rows are at the top so it's like I'm starting with row 1 again.
I hope this helps but post back if I misunderstood your question.
Alan

I have had some problems putting individual labels into the correct spot on a partially used label sheet. Do you have any suggestions for that?
Tony
From: main@jfw.groups.io [mailto:main@jfw.groups.io] On Behalf Of Alan Lemly
I learned a long time ago after repeated envelope jams in the office laser printer to print on labels instead of envelopes. I prefer the Avery 5160 labels which come 3 to a row with 10 rows for a total of 30 labels on a sheet the same size as an 8 and a half by 11 inch sheet of paper and that can be loaded in a laser printer paper tray. Microsoft Word allows for label printing and you can select the label type and style and either print a full page of the same label or specifically identify what row and column label you are printing and print them individually. The sheet never jams in my black and white laser printer and I remove the printed label from the sheet and stick it on my envelope of choice for mailing. I keep a full sheet of return address labels which I use as needed.
I recommend that those having trouble printing addresses on envelopes give this method a go. It works great with Word 2010.

You are not making any sense. You cannot print an envelope without some kind of program. You cannot simply place an envelope in the printer and print an address on it without launching a program like MS Word to print it. So which program are you using?
