JAWS 2019 and Winamp
Marty Hutchings
Hay list friends, Well, I did it. I Was able to DJ for my daughter's sweet 16 party using a Windows 10 laptop connected to a PA system and Winamp and JAWS 2019. Everything went well except for one little hitch. When I would do some other task on the computer while running Winamp and switch back to Winamp, I would loose JAWS speaking when arrowing up and down in the playlist. I would have to restart JAWS and things would work fine. JAWS would continue to work, just not in the play list. This would happen when I would go to Windows Volume mixer to make adjustments to the computer audio output level. Is there a reason that I would loose some JAWS functionality with Winamp after switching back? You may remember that I was able to get JAWS to speak the playlist by changing the Winamp skin to Classic.

As glen mentioned, place markers are really helpful for web based software like this. I've worked in various companies which use these types of systems for sales, bookings etc. when I first start and get an understanding of the software and the fields I'll use and in which order, I'll set place markers everywhere over pages I'll need to access, and use the 'find next place marker key' every time I need to jump to the next section/field I need to get to if its not the next field jaws would naturally take me too using the tab key. I don't believe my company had anything specially scripted for me, but again like I said I don't know how many of sales forces features our company/my particular department used and it was two years ago now at least, so things could have changed since then. I never tried the iPhone app for sales force though. Paul

If you are looking for a regular area of the screen, you can put a place marker and then just press the letter K to jump to it. Or visited links will help. And then there is the Jaws search, control + F and type in part of what you are looking for and press enter. If it is not what you want, press F3 to continue looking further down the page. Glenn

Re: Turning on narrator in Windows 7
Laura Richardson
Bill,
Thank you for the info. Narrator came on but it didn’t help. When I pressed tab, narrator would say tab and when I pressed up or down arrow it would say up arrow or down arrow. Jaws won’t speak on that computer and I thought narrator might help me figure out why. That computer has Windows 7 and Jaws 16. I guess I’ll have to wait until I have sighted help available to tell me what’s on the screen and get Jaws speaking.

1. Press Windows key plus U 2. Press ALT plus N. 3. Press ENTER.

Re: Turning on narrator in Windows 7
Also be aware that Narrator as it exists prior to Windows 8/8.1 is not the Narrator you're used to in Windows 8/8.1 or 10.
I believe that even back in Windows 7 one enables/disables the ability to use whatever the built-in keyboard toggle for Narrator in Ease of Access settings, and what it is should be documented there. It will need to be turned on. -- Brian - Windows 10 Pro, 64-Bit, Version 1903, Build 18362 Many of the insights of the saint stem from his experience as a sinner. ~ Eric Hoffer

Especially for those of us who are multi-lingual and deal with foreignIf the JAWS dictionary supported partial word entries, like every other pronunciation dictionary does, we could reduce the number of entries dramatically rather than duplicate the same strings found in partial words. For instance, the suffix skaya is the feminine version of Ski in Russian surnames. With a partial word entry for Skaya, I wouldn't have to add entries for every Russian surnam ending in that suffix. One partial word entry would take care of them all. Orlando Enrique Fiol
