I guess they must have increased it from the time when I asked which
admittedly was many, many, many moons ago.
Why there's even a limit at this point I don't understand, but whatever...
Especially for those of us who are multi-lingual and deal with foreign
pronouns and all sorts of other words that don't require switching over to a
different language or if we simply want the dictionary change to take affect
across all applications and not just a specific one, you can fill those
entries up fast.

If you don't mind sending me the file I'd love to try it. If I also
have the issue and if you give me permission I'll file an official bug

I already emailed you the file privately. Feel free to share it

it maxes out at 2000 entries. it's incredible this limit hasn't been

Hi Sieghard.

First of all this seems to be something which appears to be quite
unique
to you since I can easily add stuff to the dictionary.

How many entries are in your dictionary? If you like, I can privately
email
you my dictionary and you can try adding entries to it.

Furthermore, I am on the private Jaws beta team and I have heard about
no such bug, in fact, another member of said beta team posted a message
today referring to your post on this list asking if this is a problem for
others.

Since the problem is occurring on both my desktop and laptop, I can only
conclude that my dictionary file is the problem. However, everything about
it looks fine. All the entries have the same syntax; none use uncommon
characters besides accent marks for foreign words.
So, if my file is the problem, I'm itching to find out how to correct it
without losing 1100 entries.

I know It can be frustrating when you encounter an issue which prevents
you from doing things the way you are used to, I spend a lot of time, in
fact, about 2 years corresponding with various people from Vispero before
somebody said they would take this on because they felt it would be
of use
not just to me but also to many other people who use older software for
work or their own business. One thing I found is that it always pays off
to approach a company using a reasonable tone, laying out the problem and
letting them know that you understand that they also are busy, have
priorities and they may not get to your issue right away.

I've always used a cordial and professional tone with every Vispero
employee
with whom I've interacted, since I know that only the development team can
actually look into these issues.
Still, my problem is not just about my inconvenience; it's about what
we may
need to know in the future when our dictionaries become ever larger.
No one
wants to part with thousands of entries that have taken years to assemble.
So, if there are indeed corrupted portions of JDF files, we need to
know how
to spot and fix them.
Orlando Enrique Fiol

I for one am glad Vispero has finally left the 50's and early 220's
behind and does no longer send out what to many are useless pieces of
plastic especially since in my case I haven't had a PC with a DVD
drive for many years.
The Jaws installer has changed some time ago and it is now a fairly
small setup program which means it does not contain all the files
needed for installation, instead it will download what is required
from the web.
This approach is used by increased software companies, it's been this
way with Adobe Acrobat Reader for a long time, Chrome and Microsoft
Edge are both installed this way, if you subscribe to Microsoft Office
365 the installer for the Office suite is also like this and so are
many others.
The one difference between installers like most of the ones I
mentioned above and the Jaws installer is that you can actually keep
the Chrome installer or the Edge installer and if you run it a year
from now on a new system it will still work and also download whatever
is the latest version.
For Jaws you still need to download a different setup program for the
version of Jaws you want to install, but since it is only a bit over
40 Mb, it only takes a few seconds on most fast internet connections
nowadays and another nice thing is that you don't have to worry about
32 Bit and 64 Bit, the installer does both, looks at your system and
knows which to install.
The older installer was about 180 Mb, but it still downloaded the OCR
component during the installation.
If for some reason you need a full installer or maybe you have a very
slow internet connection where it's better to have everything
downloaded to your computer first you can still download the entire
DVD so to speak, it's I think something like a 500 or 600 Gb download
and it is entirely meant to be run offline if needed.

Sieghard

Hi Meesha,

As John said, you can certainly leave it and I agree that for a while you should. But if you find you always use Jaws 2020 and there are no issues which make it necessary to fall back to Jaws 2019 you can certainly uninstall it. Here is what you do (I assume you have Windows 10):

1. Press Windows Key + X and press enter on “Apps and Features”, it’s the first item in the menu which comes up

2. Tab I think about 6 times until  you get into the list of all the installed programs and apps on your computer

3. Arrow down to “Freedom Scientific Jaws 2019” and press enter to expand it, then tab once to “Uninstall” and press enter.

4. You may have to press Uninstall one more time, but eventually the Jaws 2019 installer starts and you can select to remove it, just make very sure you don’t and I mean “do not” check to remove shared components because if you do Jaws 2020 will also no longer work. You can, if you want, remove the user files by checking that option.

5. Let the uninstallation finish and reboot, there is a good chance Jaws 2020 won’t speak at the logon screen or even after you enter your password, if that is the case just load Jaws 2020 manually, then go into Jaws Options > Basics, tab twice to “Automatically Start Jaws” and make sure the option for Jaws to speak at the logon screen is checked and that it is set to “Always” for speaking after the desktop loads. That’s it.

So now I have downloaded the online version of JAWS 2020 and installed it on my system and I was expecting it to prompt for authorization however I think it automatically picked it up.

So far…. It seems to run smoothly. And I have two versions now –both 2019 and 2020. I am not sure if I should uninstall 2019 as for some reason I never had a smooth uninstallation of JAWS as whenever I try to uninstall it, it always leaves it’s components and then when I try to install the JAWS, it doesn’t get properly installed like doesn’t give the usual audio feedback etc.

So may be I leave both of these…I hope that wouldn’t be a problem??

Thanks

Subject: How to update JAWS 2020

Hello,

I currently have JAWS 2019 running on my system and I am entitled to JAWS 2020 as a part of my SMA. I would like to confirm whether I need to download JAWS 2020 on my system separately or it will automatically be updated if I click “Check for updates” in JAWS 2019 help option?

Thanks,

Hi Orlando,

If you don't mind sending me the file I'd love to try it. If I also have the issue and if you give me permission I'll file an official bug report as a member of the Jaws private beta team, please also let me know if I can share the file with Vispero if they ask for it.

Regards,
Sieghard

Hi Sieghard.

How many entries are in your dictionary? If you like, I can privately email you my dictionary and you can try adding entries to it.

Since the problem is occurring on both my desktop and laptop, I can only conclude that my dictionary file is the problem. However, everything about it looks fine. All the entries have the same syntax; none use uncommon characters besides accent marks for foreign words.
So, if my file is the problem, I'm itching to find out how to correct it without losing 1100 entries.

I've always used a cordial and professional tone with every Vispero employee with whom I've interacted, since I know that only the development team can actually look into these issues.
Still, my problem is not just about my inconvenience; it's about what we may need to know in the future when our dictionaries become ever larger. No one wants to part with thousands of entries that have taken years to assemble. So, if there are indeed corrupted portions of JDF files, we need to know how to spot and fix them.

Hi Sieghard.

First of all this seems to be something which appears to be quite
unique to you since I can easily add stuff to the dictionary.
How many entries are in your dictionary? If you like, I can privately email you my dictionary and you can try adding entries to it.

Furthermore, I am on the private Jaws beta team and I have heard about
no such bug, in fact, another member of said beta team posted a
message today referring to your post on this list asking if this is a
problem for others.

I know It can be frustrating when you encounter an issue which
prevents you from doing things the way you are used to, I spend a lot
of time, in fact, about 2 years corresponding with various people from
Vispero before somebody said they would take this on because they felt
it would be of use not just to me but also to many other people who
use older software for work or their own business. One thing I found
is that it always pays off to approach a company using a reasonable
tone, laying out the problem and letting them know that you understand
that they also are busy, have priorities and they may not get to your
issue right away.
I've always used a cordial and professional tone with every Vispero employee with whom I've interacted, since I know that only the development team can actually look into these issues.

My copy of the JAWS 2019 offline installer that I have to use here at work is 535 Megabytes. It did take a while to download. It's annoying, but there is some internet filtering security program we use here that will not allow JAWS to reach out to Freedom Scientific during the regular install process, so we have to use the offline installer.

I am talking about the offline installer. As the name implies, it contains everything you could possibly need for an installation, all the OCR components, help files and so on and it is 832MB which is very close to 1 Terrabyte.
If you don't believe me go to the Freedom Scientific download page for Jaws and select the "Offline installer for secure environments".

I for one am glad Vispero has finally left the 90's and early 2000's
behind and does no longer send out what to many are useless pieces of
plastic especially since in my case I haven't had a PC with a DVD
drive for many years.
The Jaws installer has changed some time ago and it is now a fairly
small setup program which means it does not contain all the files
needed for installation, instead it will download what is required
from the web.
This approach is used by more and more software companies, it's been
this way with Adobe Acrobat Reader for a long time, Chrome and
Microsoft Edge are both installed this way, if you subscribe to
Microsoft Office 365 the installer for the Office suite is also like
this and so are many others.
The one difference between installers like most of the ones I
mentioned above and the Jaws installer is that you can actually keep
the Chrome installer or the Edge installer and if you run it a year
from now on a new system it will still work and also download whatever
is the latest version.
For Jaws you still need to download a different setup program for the
version of Jaws you want to install, but since it is only a bit over
40Mb, it only takes a few seconds on most fast internet connections
nowadays and another nice thing is that you don't have to worry about
32 Bit and 64 Bit, the installer does both, looks at your system and
knows which to install.

Regards,
Sieghard

They suggest downloading the update and then installing. Then saving

500 or 600 GB?

Sieghard

The reason is because they make major updates through the year now and
would to keep sending out c d's for the updates.
They suggest downloading the update and then installing. Then saving
the update on a thumb drive and do for each update through the year.

This is true. I do remember hearing on a podcast and later reading
somewhere they would no longer be sending out CD/DVD discs with JAWS.

Why don't you just download it, the fact is that even if they continue
this in my opinion useless and wasteful tradition of mailing out
DVD's, the version which will be current by the time you receive the
DVD will already be newer than the original Jaws 2020.1910.54 release
which you would get on the DVD.

Hi list:

Will Vispero be mailing out this latest Jaws program release on cd,
and if yes, when should I expect to receive it?

Sincerely,

Ok, thanks. Actually someone mentioned that the auto-installer picked up the wrong version in their case so I wanted to make sure that it has picked up 64 bit in my case.

Since it is working so I suppose it has😊

Thanks

The Jaws installer is setup to determine which machine you have and install the correct version.

If you have a 64 bit machine, it won't install a 32 bit version.

I suspect you could look at the properties of the jaws.exe file and find that info, but I wouldn't bother.

If it is working, I would believe you installed the correct version.
