Re: J2020.1910.54.400 Download Link + What's New
Hi Sieghard. First of all this seems to be something which appears to be quite unique to you since I can easily add stuff to the dictionary. How many entries are in your dictionary? If you like, I can privately email you my dictionary and you can try adding entries to it. Furthermore, I am on the private Jaws beta team and I have heard about no such bug, in fact, another member of said beta team posted a message today referring to your post on this list asking if this is a problem for others. Since the problem is occurring on both my desktop and laptop, I can only conclude that my dictionary file is the problem. However, everything about it looks fine. All the entries have the same syntax; none use uncommon characters besides accent marks for foreign words. So, if my file is the problem, I'm itching to find out how to correct it without losing 1100 entries. I know It can be frustrating when you encounter an issue which prevents you from doing things the way you are used to, I spend a lot of time, in fact, about 2 years corresponding with various people from Vispero before somebody said they would take this on because they felt it would be of use not just to me but also to many other people who use older software for work or their own business. One thing I found is that it always pays off to approach a company using a reasonable tone, laying out the problem and letting them know that you understand that they also are busy, have priorities and they may not get to your issue right away. I've always used a cordial and professional tone with every Vispero employee with whom I've interacted, since I know that only the development team can actually look into these issues. Still, my problem is not just about my inconvenience; it's about what we may need to know in the future when our dictionaries become ever larger. No one wants to part with thousands of entries that have taken years to assemble. So, if there are indeed corrupted portions of JDF files, we need to know how to spot and fix them. My copy of the JAWS 2019 offline installer that I have to use here at work is 535 Megabytes. It did take a while to download. It's annoying, but there is some internet filtering security program we use here that will not allow JAWS to reach out to Freedom Scientific during the regular install process, so we have to use the offline installer.

I for one am glad Vispero has finally left the 90's and early 2000's behind and does no longer send out what to many are useless pieces of plastic especially since in my case I haven't had a PC with a DVD drive for many years. The Jaws installer has changed some time ago and it is now a fairly small setup program which means it does not contain all the files needed for installation, instead it will download what is required from the web. This approach is used by more and more software companies, it's been this way with Adobe Acrobat Reader for a long time, Chrome and Microsoft Edge are both installed this way, if you subscribe to Microsoft Office 365 the installer for the Office suite is also like this and so are many others. The one difference between installers like most of the ones I mentioned above and the Jaws installer is that you can actually keep the Chrome installer or the Edge installer and if you run it a year from now on a new system it will still work and also download whatever is the latest version. For Jaws you still need to download a different setup program for the version of Jaws you want to install, but since it is only a bit over 40Mb, it only takes a few seconds on most fast internet connections nowadays and another nice thing is that you don't have to worry about 32 Bit and 64 Bit, the installer does both, looks at your system and knows which to install. The older installer was about 180 Mb, but it still downloaded the OCR component during the installation. If for some reason you need a full installer or maybe you have a very slow internet connection where it's better to have everything downloaded to your computer first you can still download the entire DVD so to speak, it's I think something like a 500 or 600 Gb download and it is entirely meant to be run offline if needed.

The Jaws installer is setup to determine which machine you have and install the correct version.
If you have a 64 bit machine, it won't install a 32 bit version.
I suspect you could look at the properties of the jaws.exe file and find that info, but I wouldn't bother.

Hi,

How do I check that?

So now I have downloaded the online version of JAWS 2020 and installed it on my system and I was expecting it to prompt for authorization however I think it automatically picked it up.
So far…. It seems to run smoothly. And I have two versions now –both 2019 and 2020. I am not sure if I should uninstall 2019 as for some reason I never had a smooth uninstallation of JAWS as whenever I try to
uninstall it, it always leaves it’s components and then when I try to install the JAWS, it doesn’t get properly installed like doesn’t give the usual audio feedback etc.
So may be I leave both of these…I hope that wouldn’t be a problem??
Dear Meesha & List:
Any time I have updated my JAWS version previously, I have had to download the new JAWS
from the FS.com web site.
The check for updates function of JAWS only checks for updates to the version
you are running.

Re: How to check if 64bit or 32bit JAWS 2020 has been installed
The Jaws installer is setup to determine which machine you have and install the correct version.
If you have a 64 bit machine, it won't install a 32 bit version.
I suspect you could look at the properties of the jaws.exe file and find that info, but I wouldn't bother.

Just leave it there.
It will not cause you any problem and if something starts acting funny with 2020, you can see if it does the same with 2019 if needed.

I for one am glad Vispero has finally left the 50's and early 220's behind and does no longer send out what to many are useless pieces of plastic especially since in my case I haven't had a PC with a DVD drive for many years. The Jaws installer has changed some time ago and it is now a fairly small setup program which means it does not contain all the files needed for installation, instead it will download what is required from the web. This approach is used by increased software companies, it's been this way with Adobe Acrobat Reader for a long time, Chrome and Microsoft Edge are both installed this way, if you subscribe to Microsoft Office 365 the installer for the Office suite is also like this and so are many others. The one difference between installers like most of the ones I mentioned above and the Jaws installer is that you can actually keep the Chrome installer or the Edge installer and if you run it a year from now on a new system it will still work and also download whatever is the latest version. For Jaws you still need to download a different setup program for the version of Jaws you want to install, but since it is only a bit over 40 Mb, it only takes a few seconds on most fast internet connections nowadays and another nice thing is that you don't have to worry about 32 Bit and 64 Bit, the installer does both, looks at your system and knows which to install.
