Unfortunately, that technique didn’t work for me either. I was sort of looking forward to it. I’m not sure why it should have worked, and it didn’t.

Tom,
If insert-pagedown is working for you, that’s what’s supposed to happen. However, for a lot of folders, that count measures only the number of files shown in a screen. It doesn’t show the number of files in the folder, which is often much larger. The method I described, which I learned from Rebecca on the closed JAWS list, enables JAWS users to get both the screen and the folder count.

Unfortunately, I was unable to get an accurate file count by switching to Narrator, and then back to Jaws as you suggest.
For me, insert page down seems to be the best way to get an accurate file count, until this bug is fixed.
Of course, I’m always open to other suggestions.
By the way, I always check to be sure my screen is maximized.

Dean,
Switch to Narrator, which gives counts for both the current screen and the entire file list in a folder. Switch back to JAWS, and JAWS is now likely to report the desired information.

It seems to me there was a solution to this little problem, but I can’t remember it. JAWS 2019 in Windows 10 gives inaccurate counts of files. It will report that a given file is 1 of 25, when in fact there are many more than 25 files in the folder. I have changed the item type of the folder, to no avail. NVDA does this fine. The file is maximized. Is there a known fix?

Re: Do I need JAVA?
There's no way anyone can really answer this, as it depends entirely on whether you use any online apps or websites that use Java.
I would uninstall the Java Runtime Environment from Control Panel, Programs & Features then see how things go. If you do end up needing Java for something you can just download and reinstall it again, which is what you'll do anyway if you wish to try to resolve this issue. -- Brian - Windows 10 Pro, 64-Bit, Version 1903, Build 18362 Many of the insights of the saint stem from his experience as a sinner. ~ Eric Hoffer

Most people don't use JAVA. you would only need to
use JAVA if you are using a program that requires it, such as some online

Hello All,
I have the latest JAWS and Windows 10. I recently started getting, after a hard boot or restart, an error message that JAVA had not properly loaded. I did nothing new, and thus I have no idea why this error is coming up now. What advice do you have for me?

Re: Multiple speech schemes?
Cohn, Jonathan
Here is a general idea of what to do.
1. Open up settings center. 2. search for modify 3. click modify scheme 4. Create a new scheme and then edit it. 5. Change the tab to controls There will be a list of about 90 controls. For each control you can ignore, speak with standard speech, speak with a different voice alias or play a wav sound. I don't know how to add new voice aliases to the list of voices listed there, but I can't imagine it being too difficult. I only checked by changing button to play buzzer.wav and indeed the word button was replaced with a misspelling like buzzer sound. I would love to see a sound scheme that replaced button and link and slider wit appropriate wav files.

Windows+u merely brings up the Ease of Access Center (and then it's

alt+n to start Narrator), but the same keystroke does not turn off Narrator. I don't think there is a keystroke to turn on and off Narrator in Windows 7. there should be a Narrator dialog that has an Exit button, which once "pressed", brings up another dialog asking if the user is sure they want to turn off Narrator.

Re: How to focus on Chrome 77 notifications?
Dean Martineau <topdot@...>
They don’t make this easy. To get to notification settings, press alt+f, s for chrome settings, press Enter on the Advanced button to expand it, activate the link for Site Settings, and then activate the link for Notifications. Here, there is a toggle button for the global setting, which is either Block or (roughly) ask each time, the default. I much prefer Block! Below, you can add sites to the block or Allow lists.

Hi all,
When I open Google Chrome on my win7-64-powered computer running Jaws 2019, I sometimes hear notifications. Some of them, like download progress are easily reachable by pressing the <F6> or <Shift+F6> key but some others do not seem to be reachable.
In addition, some of these notifications I don’t know how to reach have several buttons which are spoken once by Jaws. One of them is “Notifications settings” and another is “done”. Since I don’t know how to interact with this button, I tried to find a page about notifications settings in the Chrome menu. I definitely know how to display the Chrome settings page but in this page, I cannot figure out what to look for about notifications.
Finally, since I don’t know how to press the “done” button which is spoken by Jaws at the end of notifications, when I press <alt+F4> to close Chrome, the foreground Chrome window is closed but Chrome still runs in the background. So, how can I interact with those notifications please?
Many thanks in advance for any advice. Have a nice day. Chris D

When trying to copy text, have you tried dropping a temporary placemarker with windows control + K, and then moving to the other end of what you want to copy and press insert + space bar, and then the letter M.

This will select what you want, then you do the normal copy command. On the Google settings, try saving the settings before leaving the page. HTH. Glenn
