moderated help with narrator and Jaws

G. Gray

I thought I’d try narrator to see if I could get Jaws to tell the number of files in a folder.  Worked ok, but now I have Jaws + narrator.  What is the key combo to shut off narrator???  Thanks

George

Can a speech scheme be set up so one voice says the text content of a page and another voice describes what the content is? Web Rent-a-crowd is different than what I'm after. As an example, of what I'm after, a sentence with a link would be: voice one My friend has a blog about voice two, link, voice one German Shepards.

Dean,

Switch to Narrator, which gives counts for both the current screen and the entire file list in a folder. Switch back to JAWS, and JAWS is now likely to report the desired information.

It seems to me there was a solution to this little problem, but I can’t remember it. JAWS 2019 in Windows 10 gives inaccurate counts of files.  It will report that a given file is 1 of 25, when in fact there are many more than 25 files in the folder. I have changed the item type of the folder, to no avail. NVDA does this fine. The file is maximized. Is there a known fix?

Dean,

This seems not what I am looking for.
The chatwindows only exist if you have a chat, so you have to pin it
each day again and remember what number it is. And I have more outlook
mailboxes open, so more outlook windows.
I want to activate windows by classname orso as is possible with
autohotkey. Wonder if a jawsscript can do this and how.\

I don't know if you can do this at work, I suspect you can, but go to the
run dialog and type shell:appsfolder and press enter. You get a listing of
everything installed on the computer. You can put icons to all of them on
the desktop, native Windows apps won't come with such icons by default, and
then assign hotkeys to them. It varies, but most of such hotkeys can be used
to switch to the app as well as launch it, but that doesn't work with Office
apps.

You can certainly pin your most important programs to the task bar. Skype
for Business and Outlook can be pinned. Once you learn the position of the
icons on the task bar, up to ten of them, you can press Windows+Number to
launch or switch to that program.

I suspect at least some of this will work for you.

Hi,

Is it possible to activate windows by using a script?

You can use ins-f10 and choose an other window, but I want to activate a
window by using a hotkey, so I can allways activate the skype for
business chat window for example or the outlook window.

Earlioer I used autohotkey for this, but at my work they don't want me
to use this program.

Dear all,
I use JAWS 2018 on a Win 10 machine. I am pissed off due to the
following issues.
1. When Jaws is on, I can often use "g". While I know that there is some

shortcut Windows + g for game bar: I continually have to turn that off.
Any way to get rid of it permanently?
2. Jaws often loses focus while I am on the net. I have to press Alt +
Tab twice to get the focus back.

Eagerly await solutions for these.

Thanks

Hi, by and large this list is obviously very good at helping out jaws users with solving problems. But why, oh why on earth do certain list members insist on shoving their own protracted views on other members, as if they don’t know what they are talking about?

I personally use windows 7 to make use of sonar, which has had jaws scripts written for, but unfortunately can’t have scripts written for windows 10.

There are any number of reasons why users might need, or just want, to use windows 7, and quite honestly, it’s none of your business why.

They are asking for help on this list, and its’ not for you to strike up with personal opinions or know-it-all answers to their questions.

In future, trust what the original poster is asking, and answer in the best way you can. Please let’s end with this know-it-all snooty crap that certain posters insist on using. We are all jaws users and our choices are our own. Leave it alone.

Just my tuppence worth, and if it gets me banned, oh well

I use what works and if that is IE then I will use it. I use win 10 and win 7 as well as 4 web  browsers. They all have there place and blindly leaving tools behind is foolish. 😁

Just noticed if you left or right arrow over the smiley jaws wont read it... But up or down arrow or any other reading command will.

I use the properties box to check many things, adjust file permissions/ownership, etc (though I usually get to it simply by pressing alt-enter), but again, I have to ask – why go through all this? There’s a status line right there on the screen, which you can check with insert-pgdn, which should tell you exactly the number of items in your folder.

I just verified this right now by going to my directory of Projection Booth film podcasts, hitting the status line JAWS command (jaws key + pgdn), and getting a total of 135 items show up on my braille display.

I then checked the properties box to be sure the count was the same – and it is identical.

One needn’t rely on jaws for such things, the info is right there, displayed by Windows for anybody to see, unless you turned the status line off of course, which I think you can do.
